Los delincuentes (2023)
Long, bloated and boring
Saw this film at the Melbourne International Film Festival and was deeply deeply diappointed.
The film runs for three hours and it absolutely does not require the massive run time, as so little of consequence actually happens in the film. The bank robbery angle is an intriguing place to start the story and the banality of the workplace provides some moments of amusement and intrigue.
However the director soon gets bored with the central premise of the story and gets distracted by meandering through a variety of inconsequential subplots. These subplots end up contributing little to the film's plot overall. By the end it was really making me angry at how slow the plot was and how little the director cared about my time.
I have rarely been so bored during a film, honestly would have walked out if I hadn't been with a bunch of people who wanted to stay.
I'd ignore the inexplicably positive reviews by the high and mighty artsy film critics, save three hours and skip this one.
Freedom Uncut (2022)
Not Good
This is a pretty poor excuse for a documentary unfortunately. The film breezes through his early career only to grind to a screeching halt covering his career in the early 90s as it spends forever on obscure album tracks that don't really tell us much about the man.
There's an interesting story about a highly influential artist in here, but this documentary does not deliver it.
Killing Me Softly (2002)
Bleah!
Quite possibly one of the worst films i have ever had the misfortune of being subjected to. Predictable, dull... just plain stupid yep.. this film has it all! They could have sold advertising space on the backs of Fiennes and Graham we saw so much of them. A truly awful film experience. In fact i had a good laugh that the so called film maker expected that films like this can still be rolled out to the general public. Avoid this at all costs, or perhaps buy a copy for someone u don't like!!
Zvezda (2002)
A Very Russian Film
What struck me about this film was how Very Russian it was. Having spent some time in the country, enough to get a sense of how Russians like to view themselves, this films themes felt very familiar. The depiction of the female radio operator, was so cliche, and well almost laughable. The band of scouts seemed to scream hey look we're PC, we even have a central Asian guy. The group also largely reminded me of the gang from Saving Private Ryan. There was even the weedyl little guy who is too afraid to shoot. All this said, its not a BAD film, its quite enjoyable, and its always interesting to see a WW2 film that is not from the Allied side. Alas though it falls short of greatness, well short due its insistence on dragging out all the old WW2 films tricks. You have seen this all before, the film offers nothing new. The thing that always irked me about Private Ryan, was the overtly sanctimonious/God Bless America style ending. The Star has an equally patriotic finale, but somehow the Russian patriotism is less galling. Overall a solid film, good even, but its been done.
