The Mist (2017)
Hirrible
Worst adaptation ever! Had nothing to do with the original story. I can't believe that Stephen King okayed this project!!! No explanation of what the mist was. Where did it come from? What caused it? How does it affect people? No monsters/scary moments at all. I forced myself to watch the last 5 episodes, hoping all along that something would happen- but it never did. Couldn't care less about the people. Their stories were trite and boring. The only thing I felt something for was the poor spider. Why did the cop squash him!!! Do not waste your time on this dreck. This was 8 hours lost that I can never get back.
Station Eleven (2021)
Passionate and elegiac
Warning- this program is not for people looking for your prototypical post-apocalyptic movie. If that is what you're looking for I'd suggest you go elsewhere- to the countless derivatives that have been churned out like candy bars over the past 2-3 decades. Like those sugar-packed treats, they are tasty at first, but ultimately unsatisfying. They leave no mark on your soul. Station Eleven requires one to think- and to feel. It was made for the viewer who has lived life and who values those experiences- good and bad- that have shaped them into who they are today. The mark of a great story is one that leaves the viewer changed. By the end of the tale you are not the same person- you look at life and the world around you a bit differently than before. Station Eleven is one of those rare stories that will touch your soul and make you feel...
Fukushima 50 (2020)
Parody or Pitiful???
One if the worst movies I have ever seen. I kept expecting Godzilla to show up. The dubbing was comical- and the overacting was cringe-worthy. What a waste of the great Ken Watanabe's talent! I couldn't even get through the first hour before I had to turn it off. Just awful!
Game of Thrones (2011)
For all the bandwagon jumpers...
It's so easy to go along with the crowd. Everyone bashing season 8 and saying how much they hate the ending. Really? I suggest you go back and watch the entire series again- at least once if not more. Then tell me how season 8 was so bad. I've watched the entire series four times- each time seeing things and understanding things in a new way. If you watch carefully, the sad take of Daenerys is foreshadowed almost from season 1, when her brother is killed by Drogo. Why anyone would be surprised by Dany torching Kings Landing is beyond me. Madness runs in the family. I will agree that the last third of the final episode is anticlimactic. The choice of Brandon as the King was disappointing to say the least. But to trash all 6 episodes of season 8 is ludicrous. Still the best tv series of all time. Looking forward to watching it a fifth time!
Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)
One of my all-time favorites!
I know I know- many people will say this was one bad movie, but those are the same people who this movie is targeted at. You know, the one's going through life with blinders on, stuck in a rut and miserable about everything. If you're on of these people then my advice is this- GO WATCH THE MOVIE AGAIN!!!
Love each day as it was your last, marvel at the beauty and wonders of this world, and treasure each precious moment with the one's you love. That's the message of this movie. Now- go live it!
John Wick (2014)
It doesn't get better than this!
The first thirty minutes of this film are pure perfection. John Wick's wife dies of a disease, she gives him a cute puppy to love, Russian thugs steal his car, beat him, and kill the dog. Wick seeks revenge. Best line of the film- Michael Nyqvist, when told that the reason his son was punched in the face was that his son stole John Wick 's car and killed his dog, simply replies, "Oh." Must see film for Keanu fans!
The Lion King (2019)
Stop the Comparisons already!!!
If I read one more time that this movie was " not as good as the original" I'm going to lose my mind! Of course it isn't as good as the original- I mean, how COULD it be??? The 1984 film was one if the best movies ever made- certainly the best animated movie ever made. So how could a remake ever live up to that?
With that said, the new version can stand on its own. Yes- I can find fault with several things- most notably the casting of Scar (why wasnt Jeremy Irons brought back???), some of the song remakes, etc. But the movie still maintains its emotional soul, and the message remains the same. And that Hans Zimmer score still brings goosebumps to my arms when I hear it!
Don't listen to the jaded 20 and 30-somethings who saw the original when they were little kids. Their understandable faithfulness to the original is expected. See this movie with an open mind- your heart will still be touched, 25 years later!
The Leftovers (2014)
It makes you feel...
Good? Bad? Both at the same time? This show is all about feeling. Characters dealing with the loss of loved ones due to the Departure- and characters dealing with the loss of loved ones BECAUSE of the Departure. That one event tore a hole in the hearts of people, and this show tells the story of how they dealt with the loss and despair. Superb acting by everyone, most notably Carrie Coon and Justin Theroux. I am so happy that I discovered this show a few years after it aired. It is a Revelation (no pun intended).
Rocketman (2019)
Sadly disappointing
There was no bigger EJ fan in the 70's than me. I lived and breathed Elton, and even learned to play the piano because of his songs. So I was eagerly anticipating this movie, especially after Bohemian Rhapsody. Sadly, by the time the credits rolled I found myself let down and very disappointed. My main issues with the movie were-
1. I didn't like that the movie was basically a musical instead of a biopic.
2. With a few exceptions, I disliked the arrangements of the songs. Why change perfection? The songs should have been presented as Elton recorded them.
3. Many factual inaccuracies and timeline issues. Songs were presented entirely out of chronological order- Elton did not sing Crocodile Rock at the Troubador.
Acting was good, esp. Taron Egerton.
Gladiator (2000)
Simply put...
Nothing else needs to be said- the greatest movie ever made.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Just wow!
Bradley Cooper hit it out of the park with "A Star is Born"! And Lady Gaga's performance is breathtaking. Worthy of Academy Award nominations for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and of course Best Picture. Best movie I have seen in a very long time.
