Wuthering Heights (2003)
Believe the bad reviews
Trust me.... It's that bad. The music...Ya it's bad also....not as bad as the dialog....it couldn't be. Please do not get this confused with any of the other 4 or so Wuthering Heights movies. This one should not even be allowed to carry the same title. I had to start writing this review so as to keep from watching the final 30 minutes as the Mrs. Does not have it in her to turn it off. Seeing the name of an accomplished actress in this movie caused me to TIVO it. I mean accomplished actor/actresses would not allow themselves to be part of garbage like this right? Lesson learned, although it was early in her career. I will say this, it could have been marketed as a comedy as some of the dialog was so painfully sad it evoked 4 or 5 laughs through the too long runtime. The only positive I got out of the movie was seeing Malcolm's brother Frances finally out of military school.
Elizabeth: A Portrait in Part(s) (2022)
Maybe if I had hit a fatty....
...it might have came across as having some type of message or meaning. IDK. After about the first 10 minutes I asked the Mrs. (who loves anything Royal), "Do you have any idea what message they are trying to convey?" All I got was a shrug. A LITTLE narration would have gone a long way. Random actual dialog, usually with odd or cutesee music playing, cuts to Star Trek clips, Cleopatra scenes, AARRGH!
It's too bad there was a fair amount of historical footage, even if it was mish-mashed with movie clips could have told an interesting story. Don't expect much and maybe you won't be disappointed. Can't wait to clear it from my TIVO.
Forces of Nature (1999)
What a waste of everything
Talent, my time & space on my TIVO. Recorded this thinking Sandra Bullock, Ben Affleck must be worth watching. Stupid. Slow, improbable story. Mishmash of scenes that made no sense. Had all I could do to not turn it off. Now I've been told my review is to short and I have to spend more time wasting describing this travesty. Again, Now I've been told my review is to short and I have to spend more time wasting describing this travesty. One more time, Now I've been told my review is to short and I have to spend more time wasting describing this travesty. 43 more characters, this will do it. 6 more and done.
Big Sky: A Brief History of Crime (2022)
Hard to follow
This is more of a general review of the series, as opposed to an actual review of "A Brief History of Crime (2022)" Episode 303
First I have to admit that this is the first year of us watching this series. That said my confusion is understandable. Maybe if I start following the many stories closer they may flow a little better. There's enough dramatic scenes to make it interesting but IMHO too many for this casual watcher to make it an enjoyable watch. It's starting to remind me of Stranger Things, where ya, there are plenty of stranger things but eventually you are always left wondering and hoping for even the slightest amount of resolution.
Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser (2015)
How did this get made???
I usually don't write super critical reviews and I am a big fan of Joe Dirt, the original, but in this case I am making an exception. I only gave it 2 star vs 1 or 0 was because of the occasionally funny scene, but waiting for those scenes was painful. The wandering "story" had none of the direction of the original and seemed more like a reason to get to raunchy, mostly unfunny scenes that and along with ripping off scenes from other movies had me straining to not delete this from my DVR before I finished.
Whoever made the decision to send this movie directly to the website Crackle should be given an award. With the amount of high quality actors involved one would assume it can't be that bad. One would be wrong. I have to believe many of the actors hope no one ever sees this flick. Now don't get me wrong if you are a fan of Joe Dirt you should add this to watch list. Just go in with very low expectations and have something else occupy your mind while you wait for something "worthwhile". You have been warned.
The Mountain Between Us (2017)
As bad as it gets
Ya gotta know when in the first 10 minutes of a supposedly serious movie there are bad/impossible/stupid scenes that would take a great comeback to overcome that it's not most likely going to happen. And it didn't. Here's the synopsis: cliche' cliche' cliche', peril peril peril, dumb, unbelievable dump impossible decisions. The end.
My Sister's Keeper (2002)
Difficult to Watch
OK, the title of this review may be a bit misleading. I titled it as such because this film hits me so close to home, but in my case it would be My Brother's Keeper. There are so many scenes in this film that parallel very closely or often exactly the situations my spouse and I have been dealing with for the last 25 or more years it made watching this film almost an additional helping of our reality. The rollercoaster ride from lucid to delusional, the resentment, the heaping of guilt, the unknowing of what you are going to get from one conversation to the next, I could go on and on.
A couple of complaints I will lodge probably reflect more on our situation than the film. First the portrayal of the social worker involvement was somewhat overdone or maybe that was nearer to the experience they were trying to reflect. We also thought the ratio of lucid to delusional was skewed to heavily toward lucid. Finally even though Kathy Bates handled the back and forth required to play this role, I thought she spoke a little to quickly to be a believable schizo-affective/bipolar person. In our experiences many persons affected with these disorders are deliberate and look at you while they process the conversation and then communicate their thoughts. Brad Pitt in 12 Monkeys they are not.
This film just scratches the surface of dealing with a family member with a mental illness, but it does so without being too depressing.
Castaways (2018)
What's the point??
And yes I have watched several episodes. I don't get it. Boring, random backstories, sometimes I wonder if the channel got changed. rambling and pointless. I get the feeling when we get to the final episode it will just end and we will all be sitting here saying, "What it's over?"
The Orville: Old Wounds (2017)
Pilot Launched
Surely grading on a curve considering the new shows I've seen promos for, but The Orville has potential. Sure there were a few bumps in the launch of the pilot, but it is at least watchable. Some of the humor was somewhat unnecessarily coarse and some viewers may find it objectionable. The character introductions were sufficient and set up the interactions to follow for the crew. I'd put the ratio of actual story to comic relief to be about 70/30. By the end of the episode I was interested in the story and satisfied with the conclusion. "Issac set the DVR to record".
