Nobody's Fool (1994)
If Sully is a fool, I wanna be one, too.
The movie appeared in Germany in 1995, and it was the best movie of the year in my eyes. It is of a class, which is not interesting for the industry, or why there are no more films like this today ? A warm, human film full of values which doesn't seems to fit in anywhere. But, this is life (or it should be). The characters are reliable, like you and me. The whole making is perfect, because there seems to be no pressure anyway. Only with this calm Benton could create such a perfect movie. Newman seems to play himself, Tandy seems to play herself, and so on ... is it a documentary feature ??? (O.K. it's irony !!!) An additional fact for the movies' outstanding is, that Willis is not mentioned in the film opening credits, and it doesn't look like he was angry about it. So why had he done this, huh ???
I love this film, hope you will do so, if you see it (SEE IT !!! SEE IT !!! SEE IT !!! - unconscious influence). TEN points - full strength, and ... if Sully will be put to his grave one day, I wanna be a porter of his coffin and believe or not ... , I will find a place for the snow plough, too !
Darkman (1990)
What's going wrong ???
A poor movie. It's a bad Batman copy. Everything is going wrong. Not very exciting, not fascinating, not ... . Three Points. For Elfman's score, the nice directing but nothing more. As it is was over, I was happy that I hadn't seen it in the cinema, just only on TV. Raimi, Neeson and Mc Dormand can do their job much better. They have proved it. Please, not such a failure again.
Amadeus (1984)
Who the hell is Salieri ???
Milos Forman did a good job, but a lot of his efforts are leading into an empty space. Abraham and Hulce do their best, and Mozart is no longer a mysterium, but a lot of things are forgotten after a short time. Art direction and costume design are outstanding, but it is not enough for such a great picture, as it is acclaimed to be. Six points - no more - no less.
Night Has a Thousand Eyes (1948)
The spirit of Woolrich. Can you feel it ?
A jewel in the rough. A small little movie with a great Edward G. Robinson. The loneliness of Triton is played with a big intensity by him. Story, actors and shooting of the film is both, film noir and drama of loneliness and being lost, quite as it is Woolrich's credo in a lot of his novels and screen adaptations. This is one of its best. Eight points.
Chinatown (1974)
Welcome in the seventies, Film noir
It took a long time between the golden age of this genre and Chinatown. Surprisingly, a european has to show America how to resurrect it. All in this movie is just evil. Nicholson is evil great, Dunaway evil mysterious and Huston and Polanski himself are just only evil, but...(he,he,he). Every detail fits in its place, the Academy Award for Towne's screenplay is quite o.k., but it doesn't hit me out of my chair. Perhaps it takes just a few minutes too long to chill me, perhaps it's only Faye Dunaway. I don't know. But that's the problem. Sometimes you see a movie, something is wrong, and you don't know what. The final kick as it exists in "Farewell, my lovely" with Bob Mitchum is missing. Nevertheless, Chinatown is seven points worth to me. A good attempt (for the first try after such a long time) and much, much better as it's sequel.
