The Forest Hills (2023)
A Journey into true Horror
Director Scott Goldberg presents The Forest Hills, a film that marks Shelley Duvall's return to the screen in a haunting final performance.
The story follows Rico (Chiko Mendez), who spirals into madness while isolated in the Catskill mountains. Battling inner demons and haunted by a troubled past with his mother, Mama (Shelley Duvall), Rico leans on his friend Billy (Edward Furlong) for support as he tries to navigate his unraveling mind.
After suffering a head injury, Rico begins experiencing horrific visions and becomes dangerously aggressive toward his loved ones. Initially, it seems like the story might head into werewolf territory, adding a supernatural twist. Though it ultimately takes a different path, the film still explores themes of mental illness in a powerful, symbolic way.
In her role as Mama, Duvall plays a deeply flawed character. We're introduced to her through a disturbing flashback showing a traumatic moment where she tries to harm her children, Rico and Emily. Now, years later, Mama is dying from stage four lung cancer and calls on Rico (now an adult, portrayed by Mendez) to care for her. While Duvall's screen time is mostly in the film's beginning, her character's influence lingers as Rico contends with his own struggles, including a fear that werewolves lurk in the nearby woods.
The Forest Hills has been marketed as a werewolf movie, and there are eerie glimpses of creatures in the forest. But viewers looking for a classic monster flick will find something more surreal here. The official synopsis captures it best: "a man is tormented by nightmarish visions after enduring head trauma while camping in the Catskill woods." The movie plunges us into Rico's distorted reality, presenting a fragmented narrative that leaves us questioning what's real and what's imagined. Is there truly a werewolf? Is Rico losing control of his mind-or worse, becoming a killer? The lines between reality and hallucination blur, echoing Rico's disorientation.
Chiko Mendez delivers a standout performance, fully embodying Rico's turmoil and drawing us into his journey. Though Duvall, Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Dee Wallace (The Howling), Stacey Nelkin (Halloween III: Season of the Witch), Marianne Hagan (Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers), and Edward Furlong (Terminator 2) make strong appearances, Mendez is the heart of the film, carrying its most intense moments.
With additional cameos from iconic figures like Marc Summers, The Forest Hills has something for horror fans, particularly for those who will appreciate its subtle nods to genre legends. The inclusion of diverse leads like Chiko Mendez as Rico and Linda Flores as his sister Emily is also a refreshing addition, offering an inclusive twist to the genre.
I really enjoyed so many legends together and in my opinion Scott Goldberg accomplished a find farewell to a legend. Shelly Duvall was and will always be a legend.
Devil's Knight (2024)
Devil's Knight is spectacular
Michael Mahal and Sonny Mahal are two of the hardest-working and most prolific producers in independent horror. They've mastered the art of crowd-funding, and as the saying goes, nobody does it better. Their latest project, Devil's Knight, is another hit in their growing catalog of films.
Coming hot off last year's Bermuda Island, Devil's Knight, directed by Adam Werth, takes us to medieval times, where monsters roam the land. The settings in this movie are elaborate and authentic, showing that the Mahals spared no expense in making their biggest production to date.
The movie opens with a group of trackers on a mission to kill a creature, setting the mood with a tense campfire scene that quickly turns into a bloodbath. The lighting and choreography in this sequence are excellent, with splatter effects that horror fans will appreciate. It's a strong start to the movie, promising bloodshed and action that only ramps up from there.
In Devil's Knight, the people live in fear of the monsters roaming the countryside. King Samuel (Kevin Hager) of Veroka hires an elite group of global monster hunters, known as the Lost Blades, to hunt and kill the ancient Bone Devil, whose reign of terror threatens the Kingdom of Remény. The Lost Blades are a ruthless, efficient group, and we get a taste of their skills early on. But, as in any good story, there are deeper layers-conspiracy and betrayal lurk behind every corner, and no one can be trusted in the Kingdom of Remény. The plot is rich with intrigue, and the writing by Vincent V. Gelsomino and Adam Werth is tight, giving the audience exactly what they want: monster action and political drama.
The Mahals know their audience well and have once again gathered a fantastic cast and crew to bring their vision to life. Tom Devlin's creature designs are terrifying, perhaps his best work yet, and the practical effects are top-notch. Fans of classic sword-and-sorcery films will find much to love here, with beautiful women, heroic knights, magic, beasts, and carnage galore. What sets Devil's Knight apart is the balance of power between good and evil-neither side stands out as predictable, which keeps the audience on their toes.
The film's technical aspects are worth noting as well. Vanessa Giacoletti's makeup, Joanna David's costumes, Terence J. Rotolo's stunt coordination, Tyler David Gilbert's score, and Michael Su's stunning cinematography all come together to create an immersive world that's both beautiful and terrifying.
Overall, Devil's Knight is another solid entry from the Mahal Empire. They continue to deliver films that please their core audience, and with four more projects in the pipeline-Alien Horde, Cursed Waters, Alien Storm, and Bikers vs. Werewolves-it's clear they have no plans of slowing down. I'm personally excited for what's next. Cheers to another great movie!
Terrifier 3 (2024)
Art the Santa Clown
Director Damien Leone returns with the highly anticipated Terrifier 3, reuniting audiences with the sadistic Art the Clown ( David Howard Thornton) after a five-year hiatus. Picking up where Terrifier 2 left off, the film follows Sienna (Lauren LeVera) and her brother Jonathan (Elliot Fullam) as they try to rebuild their lives after surviving Art's brutal attacks. This time, the horror unfolds against the backdrop of the Christmas season, marking a fresh thematic shift from the previous Halloween-centered entries.
The decision to set the film during Christmas is a brilliant and unexpected move. It offers a stark contrast between the holiday's traditional cheer and Art's grotesque, gory antics, which are more deranged and inventive than ever before. The festive setting provides ample opportunities for both symbolic religious references and a new series of macabre, holiday-themed kills, elevating the shock value that the franchise is known for.
Once again, David Howard Thornton shines as Art the Clown, blending twisted humor with unspeakable violence. The kills in Terrifier 3 are not just shocking-they're designed to push boundaries, even for a desensitized audience accustomed to the extremities of modern horror. This installment surpasses its predecessors in the gruesome department, testing even the most hardened horror fans' limits with scenes that will leave viewers gasping or turning away. The film's practical effects-eschewing CGI for old-school gore-continue to be a highlight, grounding the violence in a tangible, horrifying reality.
Lauren LeVera's performance as Sienna stands out as she delivers a raw, emotional portrayal of someone trying to recover from unimaginable trauma. Her growth as a character, as well as an actress, is palpable, grounding the film with a sense of resilience and human struggle amid the chaos. Equally haunting is Samantha Scaffidi's return as Victoria, whose disfigurement by Art and subsequent descent into madness create a disturbing parallel narrative that complements the main storyline.
With its unrated status, Terrifier 3 takes full advantage of its freedom, pushing the envelope with no censorship restrictions, allowing Leone's team to fully explore the depths of Art's depravity. The creative team's chemistry is evident, and their collaborative synergy ensures that each scene is as unsettling as it is visually stunning.
In a world where audiences are often desensitized by real-life horrors, it's remarkable that Terrifier 3 can still shock and disturb. Leone's dedication to practical effects and his skill in crafting nerve-wracking, blood-soaked set pieces reaffirm his place in the modern slasher pantheon. The film ends with enough intrigue to suggest there's more to explore in Art's twisted world, and based on the trajectory of the series, a fourth installment is highly anticipated.
With Terrifier 3, Art the Clown has cemented his place as an iconic slasher villain, rivaling genre heavyweights like Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees. Leone and his cast have delivered another memorable chapter in a series that continues to redefine the boundaries of horror.
Terrifier 3 is a must-see for diehard slasher fans, but be warned: it's not for the faint of heart.
The Whisper 2: Natural Connection (2024)
The Whisper 2 chilled my bones
"I was thoroughly impressed with how Director Miroslav Petkov seamlessly incorporated my scenes into The Whisper 2. The way the inserts blended with the rest of the film was nothing short of flawless. I particularly enjoyed the atmospheric details, such as the tree with the mysterious symbol and the haunting, abandoned building.
The performances were top-notch, with Simone Rose, Rudy Ledbetter, Georgia Vodenicharova, and Oktober Layne delivering standout moments. Special mention goes to Alicia Hinson, whose chilling voice brought The Whisper to life in an eerie and captivating way.
When I first agreed to do my scene, I thought it was cool but couldn't quite picture how it would all come together. But now, after seeing the final product, I'm blown away. In just 13 minutes, this short story feels like a full-length film in its depth and execution. I'm incredibly proud to be part of The Whisper 2 and to have played such a significant role in this remarkable project."
Crackcoon (2024)
Crackoon delivers
"Crackcoon" delivers exactly what you'd hope for in a film about a drug-fueled raccoon on a killing spree-and that's what makes it such a fun ride. It doesn't take itself too seriously and instead focuses on pure, unfiltered entertainment, hitting the mark effortlessly. Director Brad Twigg is a master at this genre and truly scores with Crackcoon, showcasing his ability to craft outrageous, sleazy horror that keeps audiences hooked.
The plot is as outrageous as it sounds, following the rabid raccoon as it tears through hunters, adulterous women, campers, and drug dealers. While the storyline is predictable, it works in the movie's favor, laying the foundation for absurdly wild kills and laugh-out-loud moments. The predictability only enhances the enjoyment, allowing viewers to sit back and revel in the madness.
One of the real showstoppers here is the raccoon itself, reminiscent of an evil version of the gopher from Caddyshack. It's ridiculous and unforgettable, paired perfectly with old-school makeup and gore FX that bring the chaos to life. The film doesn't shy away from blood-soaked moments, and for indie horror fans, that's what makes it a gem. It serves up a delightful mix of violence, humor, and pure absurdity, all with a nod to the indie horror spirit that never holds back.
Overall, Crackcoon is everything you'd want from a sleazy, over-the-top horror flick. It's unapologetically campy, laugh-out-loud funny, and delivers the kind of blood-soaked action that keeps horror lovers satisfied. Director Brad Twigg has knocked it out of the park with this one, making it a must-watch for fans of wild, indie horror fun!
Escape (2023)
Escape from Hell
Written and Directed by Howard J Ford. Who is the writer/director of The Ledge, Never Let Go, The Lockdown Hauntings, and Darkgame comes "Escape", a gripping thriller that dives deep into the terrifying world of human trafficking.
The film begins with ten young women lured to an exclusive island resort, enticed by promises of luxury and relaxation. However, what appears to be a dream vacation quickly spirals into a nightmare when they discover that the resort is a front for human trafficking. In a terrifying sequence, the women are drugged, bound, and transported to a remote desert location where they face the grim reality of being sold into human trafficking.
The film's desert setting makes matters worse , and the stakes feel higher as the women are constantly watched by armed guards. Yet, despite the overwhelming odds, two of the women-Karla (Sarah Alexandra Marks) and Lucy (Sophie Rankin)-refuse to give in to despair. Both actresses deliver standout performances, bringing depth and intensity to their roles as they plot a daring escape. Their journey is a harrowing test of endurance, trust, and resilience as they attempt to outwit their captors and survive the desert's unforgiving terrain.
Sean Cronin is chilling as Andras, the ruthless lead trafficker. His menacing presence adds tension to every scene, driving home the life-or-death stakes for the women. What begins as a desperate escape attempt quickly escalates into a thrilling battle for survival, culminating in a deadly showdown as the traffickers close in.
Trafficking and women's prison movies have long been staples of exploitation cinema, particularly since the 1970s, where sensationalism was key. However, Escape distinguishes itself by setting aside the exploitative elements and focusing on action and story. The film avoids shock value, delivering instead a serious narrative that emphasizes well-developed characters and intense, action-heavy storytelling.
Travellian Skipaldi's stunning cinematography makes the desert locations breathtaking while heightening the film's tension and excitement. Combined with a dynamic directorial effort and a strong cast, Escape transforms what could have been a standard thriller into a captivating and pulse-pounding experience.
In conclusion Escape is a thrilling, action-packed film that takes a serious approach to a harrowing subject, carried by strong performances, engaging storytelling, and striking visuals. I found it very entertaining and a fun watch.
Lady Scorpions (2024)
Rothrock is back bigger and better
Lady Scorpions (2024) is an action-thriller meets family drama with a crime twist, directed by Bruce Del Castillo.
The legendary Cynthia Rothrock in top form as Alena Moore, a FBI agent who is thrust back into action when her granddaughter is kidnapped by a dangerous criminal organization.
Rothrock, as always, is a force to be reckoned with, and fans of her 80s work will not be disappointed. This time, she's joined by Caitlin Dechelle, who plays her daughter. Their bond is key to the film's emotional core, and their on-screen chemistry is fantastic. Together, they make a believable mother-daughter rescue team, and their dynamic elevates the story beyond a typical action flick.
The movie never lets up, delivering expertly choreographed fight scenes that will keep you glued to the screen. In a post-Covid world flooded with action movies that often lack originality, Lady Scorpion stands out due to its unique focus on family bonds, perfectly woven into the fast-paced action.
Rothrock fans will be pleased to know that the fights here are as brutal as ever-no holding back. This is the Cynthia Rothrock we all know and love, showing she can still take on the bad guys without missing a beat.
Overall, Lady Scorpions is a fun and fresh take on the action genre, with a perfect blend of family drama and high-octane thrills. Rothrock's fans will find plenty to love here, as she once again proves she never disappoints.
Cemitério (2024)
What makes this a real Horror...it's true
Directed by Asif Akbar, "Boneyard" emerges as a bold crime-thriller inspired by true events, delivering a gripping narrative that delves into the unsettling mystery of the West Mesa Murders. Set against the stark backdrop of the New Mexico desert, the film follows Police Chief Carter (Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson), Detective Ortega (Brian Van Holt), and FBI Agent Petrovick (Mel Gibson) as they unite to investigate the discovery of eleven skeletal remains.
Curtis Jackson commands the screen with a strong portrayal of the determined police chief, complemented by Brian Van Holt's nuanced performance as a dedicated detective. Mel Gibson adds depth with his portrayal of a seasoned FBI agent, enhancing the story's intensity and complexity. A really well-done flashback reveals the poignant backstory of Mel Gibson's character, explaining his current demeanor. In the scene, an unsuccessful hit by a thug, played by Shannon Ritch, tragically and accidentally results in the death of his daughter Sam, a role skillfully portrayed by Courtney Akbar. This event profoundly shapes the character's motivations and actions throughout the film. The film skillfully navigates the interplay of conflicting agendas and investigative methods among the characters, unraveling a web of intrigue and suspicion.
The narrative unfolds through a compelling multi-agency effort to track down the elusive killer, heightened by personal and professional challenges that amplify the tension. The portrayal of suspects like the solitary Caesar (Weston Cage Coppola) and corrupt officer Tate (Michael Sirow) keeps viewers engaged, punctuating the investigation with twists and turns.
While tackling dark and sensitive themes, "Boneyard" treats its subject matter with sensitivity and respect, paying homage to the victims of the West Mesa Murders. Joshua Reis's cinematography and R. J. Cooper's editing create a captivating atmosphere, complemented by Andrew Morgan Smith's score that underscores the drama and suspense.
Ultimately, "Boneyard" stands out as a poignant exploration of a haunting real-life tragedy, shedding light on the unresolved West Mesa Bone Collector murders. Director Asif Akbar navigates this sensitive subject with care, ensuring that the film honors the victims' memory while delivering a compelling crime thriller. For fans of the genre, "Boneyard" offers a gripping narrative, strong performances, and a chilling premise that keeps audiences captivated until the credits roll.
Arena Wars (2024)
Summer Fun
Ninety minutes of action-packed, over-the-top pure fun. Directed by Brandon Slagle, who takes the throne and once again gives us an eye-opening experience. The Mahal Empire's newest "Arena Wars" does not disappoint. This is an escape room on steroids. You're front and center to the most horrific sporting event in history. The year is 2045, convicted criminals are given the opportunity to compete on the world's #1 televised sporting event, Arena Wars. They must survive 7 rooms and 7 of the most vicious killers in the country. If they win, they regain their freedom. Who do you root for here? The criminals of serious crimes or the vicious killers? They are pretty much equal. The criminals have been convicted of not petty crimes but murder and rape, so there is no feeling sorry here. As the viewers in the movie, you too are propelled into this futuristic society where violence and punishment are front and center of prime time.
The concept is you either fight for your life at any cost or are met with death. You have 7 levels of horror that if you complete, your crimes are forgiven and you're set free, no questions asked. Yeah, no simple task. You know you're in for some fun when your host Holly Daze, played by Sheri Davis, greets you with a warm greeting of "What's up, B*****?"
The first set of 10 are not very successful and there is no winner; they need a rating booster, so in comes what they think will boost their ratings. Robert Lasorda is among the first bunch and as usual, is a standout as a killer convicted of 57 murders. His presence always is so skillfully played out in anything he does. He truly shines here in the opener.
Ten more are ready for Arena Wars but its group is different. Luke Bender (John Wells), a decorated marine wrongly accused. So it's a real rating grabber, an innocent man fighting for his life. It's customary in these movies, like Total Recall, to have the innocent hero wrongly accused. A ratings grabber by the people in charge of the game promotes that aspect to have a cheering section for the underdog. He takes responsibility for leading his ragtag scums of society into taking down these 7 maniacs in 7 arenas of death.
We are now thrust into the Mahal world of never shying away from anything and throwing buckets of blood and every imaginable way of death that will have you look away but childishly look back with a smile, saying to yourself, "now that's entertainment." There's never a time to breathe; once things get started, they won't let up till the end credits. But as true tradition in these movies, you're always met with that "what the eff" moment.
These kinds of movies are never complete without someone to announce all the action unfolding. Michael Madden is perfect with his sick-minded, almost sadistic commentaries, along with the equally talented Robert Donavan. They are the hosts with the most and then some. Great chemistry and commentary move things along and take off the edge when things get really crazy. Their opening remarks on each of the gladiators are historic.
Special note on the cinematography, as always, is remarkable by Michael Su. The guy is the master of his craft and just adds to every project he is part of.

Bound (2023)
Harsh backdrops driver a bright story
"Bound," the feature directorial debut from Isaac Hirotsu Woofter, is a gripping indie drama that explores the resilience of the human spirit against a backdrop of abuse, trauma, and the harsh realities of life in New York City.
The film stars Alexandra Faye Sadeghian as Bella Patterson, a young woman deeply scarred by her past. Bella's life has been a relentless struggle, trying to shield her mentally unstable mother, Yeva (Pooya Mohseni), from her abusive and drug-dealing stepfather, Gordy (Bryant Carroll). When the situation becomes unbearable, Bella makes the brave decision to flee home, accompanied by her loyal pet sugar glider (aka pocket squirrel or flying squirrel). Symbolizing her fragile yet resilient heart and soul.
Sadeghian delivers a remarkable and convincing performance as Bella. Her portrayal captures the raw emotions and complexities of a young woman grappling with her traumatic past while striving to forge a new path. Her nuanced acting brings depth and authenticity to the character, making Bella's journey both compelling and relatable.
Her journey to New York City is fraught with challenges. With no money, no friends, and no shelter, Bella's pride prevents her from turning back. She briefly joins a group of goths and punks but soon finds herself on the run again. Her fortunes begin to change when she meets Owais (Ramin Karimloo), a Muslim American war hero who has lost everything after returning from the war. He offers her a job at his coffee shop, providing a glimmer of stability in her chaotic life.
As Bella starts to rebuild her life, she forms meaningful connections with Standrick, a gay black clothing designer, and Marta (Jessica Pimentel), an immigrant bar owner. These relationships help her to rediscover her passion for art and begin the process of healing. However, Gordy is determined not to let her go easily, adding a layer of tension to her newfound sense of hope.
"Bound" is a testament to Bella's toughness and determination. Sadeghian's powerful portrayal of Bella anchors the film, capturing the complexity of a young woman navigating the hard edges of New York City while clinging to her inner strength. The supporting cast, including Karimloo, Pimentel, and Mohseni, provide depth to the narrative, each portraying characters who are themselves dealing with profound personal struggles.
Woofter's direction brings a raw and authentic feel to the film, immersing the audience in Bella's journey. The pocket squirrel, an unusual but effective symbol, underscores the delicate balance between vulnerability and resilience.
"Bound" is a poignant and compelling story of survival, friendship, and self-discovery. It reminds us that even in the darkest times, there is always a way forward. Alexandra Faye Sadeghian's performance as Bella Patterson is nothing short of outstanding, making "Bound" a must-watch for its emotional depth and exceptional character portrayal.
Amityville Turkey Day (2024)
Turkey Time
"Amityville Turkey Day" serves up a deliciously twisted sequel to its predecessor, "Amityville Thanksgiving," courtesy of director and writer Will Collazo. This time, a demonic turkey wreaks havoc on the set of an indie horror film, turning Thanksgiving dinner into a nightmare. As the plot delves into the mysteries surrounding Frank Domonico (Mark C Fullhardt), and a leaked tape exposing his misdeeds, the film within a film concept adds layers of intrigue. With sleazy filmmaker Rocco at the helm, supported by a quirky crew including his mom, the chaos unfolds swiftly after the delivery of a mysterious package. What sets this film apart is its commitment to fun, with witty dialogue delivered impeccably by a dedicated cast. "Amityville Turkey Day" revels in its own absurdity, making it a delightfully entertaining watch that doesn't take itself too seriously. With a stellar ensemble cast and inventive storytelling, this sequel is a must-watch for horror aficionados craving a unique spin on the genre.
Stand out performances by David Rodriguez in his acting debut. Had me pissing my pants. Also note amazing performances from David Perry and one of the best performances I have seen from Tim Hatch.
Really fun dialogue delivered flawlessly by the dedicated actors make this really fun to watch. What makes this fun is it doesn't take it self seriously and has fun with it.

Mom n Pop Video Store Memories
Writer/ Director Bobby Canipe Jr. Brought a tear to my eye after Watching 'Mom n' Pop: The Indie Video Store Boom of the 80s/90s' . Wow it brought back tons of memories for me.
I fondly recall my teenage years spent working at Park Video, a small-town video store where I indulged in my love for horror movies while getting paid. It was truly the best job I ever had. Now, Bobby Canipe Jr's documentary offers a nostalgic journey back to the glory days of neighborhood video shops when they reigned supreme. Canipe has crafted a documentary that transports viewers back to a magical period where phrases like 'Be Kind Rewind' brought back so many memories.
Skeletons in the Closet (2024)
This Skeleton is out for blood
Director Asif Akbar masterfully crafts the chilling horror film "Skeleton in the Closet," delivering an atmospheric and genuinely creepy experience that lingers long after the credits roll. The movie skillfully weaves a tale where the haunting message of a life for a life resonates throughout. Valery M. The seemingly idyllic family, also featuring the excellent performances of Terrence Howard as Mark and Valentina (Valery M. The narrative intensifies as Mark's insurance denies coverage for life-saving chemotherapy, pushing the family into a series of unfortunate events on the same day as Jenny's cancer diagnosis, from a deceased family fish to job loss and mounting debts to the mob.
