Je règle mon pas sur le pas de mon père (1999)
A gentle movie. Just for Laurence Côte
A young man meets his father who he didn't know. Together, they earn their live by conning people. A small movie, which never gets deep into the characters. Jean Yanne is as usual (both his good and bad sides). Laurence Côte plays a very charming character. For the fans of Techiney actress in "Les Voleurs" (Thieves).
New Rose Hotel (1998)
Poor Ferrara... Poor Gibson !
This movie is a big deception. I like Ferrara's movies. I like Gibson's books. But the movie is tasteless. It doesn't recreate the strange atmosphere of Gibson's short story. Just series of artificially transformed pictures, without the artistic touch of former Ferrara's movie. The only good thing in that movie is Walken's playing. Too bad. Better luck next time ;-)
Cube (1997)
Very good fantastic movie. Thrilling !
It starts as a "gore" movie. Then, it moves to a psychological thriller. Six people trapped in a giant cubic jail, composed of thousands of little cubes. The path to freedom is hidden in mathematical properties. As the film goes on, it turns out that the most dangerous trap of this strange prison is the prisoners' mind. A variation on Sartre's play "Huis-clos" ? Certainly the best fantastic movie I've seen this year ! Good actors, good director.
Pas vu, pas pris (1998)
A good demystification of so-called "TV journalism"
This is a documentary about relationships between french TV journalists and politicians. By interviewing big TV news stars, Pierre Carles shows how much these journalists are afraid of making real investigations against politicians, how much they live in the same world. He denounces their lack of objectiveness. This documentary was firstly shot for a french TV chanel, "Canal +", but it was so aggressive against TV stars that Canal +' direction refused to show it. Thanks to a newspaper, money was found to allow this movie to be seen !
Louise (Take 2) (1998)
A very poetic movie about today's youth
This movie tells the story of Louise and her friends in Paris. They spend their time in the metro, playing, loving and breaking the laws. The meeting between Louise and a young boy will bring some "romance" in their violent world. Elodie Bouchez brings her lovely smile in a movie about today's youth, about people living on the edge of the society, in the oppressive but poetic world of Paris'metro.
