A Family Upside Down (1978)
Good Film
I was flipping through the channels one day, and found this film on TV. I was surprised at how good it actually was. Fred Astaire and Helen Hayes were great. He could still act (Too bad he couldn't dance). I believe it accurately shows what happens when people get older. Also it shows the effect it has on the family around them. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Weekend at Bernie's (1989)
Hilarious
This is one of the funniest films ever made. Sure, it's stupid, and it could never really happen, but it is hilarious. The 3 main actors are great, esp. Terry Kiser (Bernie). The boat scene is the best. Anyone with a sense of humor will love this movie.
Guinevere (1999)
Good film
I was going into this film expecting not to like it. The only reason I watched it was because I'm a big fan of Sarah Polley. I wouldn't say it's the best film and wouldn't make my top ten, but it was enjoyable. Polley seems to be doing a lot of "dark" films lately. I think she wants to get away from her "Road to Avonlea" image. Anyway, I think this is one of her better films, esp. when compared to The Life Before This and The Sweet Hereafter. I give it a 7/10.
Crazy in Alabama (1999)
Great film!
I wasn't sure what to expect of this film but afterwards I was glad I had watched it. Great performances, esp. from Meatloaf and Lucas Black. He's going to be a star when he's older! When I saw that Antonio Banderas had directed it, I thought "Oh, here's another one of those films where the actor/director has to put his wife in the leading role.. blah blah blah" but it was a really good film. Overall, I give it a 8/10.
On Golden Pond (1981)
Wonderful film!
What a great film for Henry Fonda to end on. This is one of the sweetest films I've ever seen. Fonda and Hepburn's performances as Norman and Ethel were flawless. Their oscars were well deserved. A film anyone would enjoy. I give it a 9/10.
Lonesome Dove: The Series (1994)
Better than "The Outlaw Years"
I thought it was a great show and was sorry to see it end. It was much better than the later "Outlaw Years" episodes. "The Outlaw Years" were good but I don't think they had the heart that "The Series" did. They were just more enjoyable and was very well acted. Watch both and see what you think, and although many will disagree with me, I think that "The Series" surpassed "The Outlaw Years" by a long shot.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Very Funny!
I wasn't sure if I'd like this film or not. I really wasn't going to give it a chance but came across it one day and was pleasantly surprised! I thought it was very funny and Jeff Bridges was just great as Dude! That's all you heard throughout the film, it was so funny! If you feel like having a good laugh, than this film is for you!
A Simple Twist of Fate (1994)
Great version of 'Silas Marner'
This has to be one of the sweetest movies ever made. I thought Steve Martin was great in this. He's a good comedian but he proves he can handle drama very well. I think it was very well made and bring tears to my eyes every time I watch it. It's a great modern version of the classic 'Silas Marner' by George Eliot (whom by the way was a woman!). Overall, I give it an 8/10.
Anne of Green Gables (1934)
Enjoyable
I've been a big fan of Lucy Maud Montgomery's work since I first saw the 1985 version of "Anne of Green Gables" and "Road to Avonlea". After viewing the 1934 version, I thought it was enjoyable but I think the '85 version was better. Probably just because I'm used to all the characters/actors from the recent one but the '34 version was a good adaptation. I thought Anne Shirley did a good job in the role and I also like the actress who played Marilla. Overall, I'd give this film a 6/10.
Little Women (1933)
Christopher Columbus!
What a great film! This has to be the best version of Little Women. I loved the scenes with Jo and Laurie. They were so much fun! Katharine was wonderful in this, as was Joan Bennett and Jean Parker. I did like the 1994 version, but in my opinion this one will never be surpassed. I give it 10/10!
Love Story (1970)
Overrated
The only reason I watched this film was because of all the rave reviews it's received. After watching.. I don't know I guess I'm "the ice queen" but it didn't move me at all and I did not cry. I don't understand how it got all those oscar nominations. Yeah, yeah the song was nice but not all that great if you think about it. Overall, I thought this film was a snore and I give it 4/10.
Instinct (1999)
Very good film!
This is a very good film with great performances from Gooding and Hopkins. Now I can understand why both men are Oscar winning actors. They make you believe, esp. Hopkins.. Wow! The film reminded me of another great movie, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" except with a happier ending. If you get a chance to catch this one, watch it!
Mother's Boys (1993)
Why??
The only reason I even gave this movie a chance was because Peter Gallagher is one of my favorite actors. After it ended, I just sat there shaking my head wondering why he and Jamie Lee Curtis agreed to do this movie. Not one I'd sit down to again. I guess if you have nothing better to do, you could watch this film, but if you can think of ANYTHING else, do that please! I assure you, it will be more entertaining.
Her Alibi (1989)
Funnier than I thought it would be
Going into this film, I didn't think it was going to be all that funny. Was I wrong! This has a lot of laughs esp. the scenes with the bow and arrow and the dinner Nina cooks for Phil's family. If you feel like having a good laugh, then watch this. It won't be a waste of time.
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Horrible remake!
As much as I love Peter Gallagher I have to say that is probably one of the worst films I've ever seen. From what I've heard about the film, I thought it was going to be great, esp. when compared to Vincent Price's film. Wrong! Oh man if you are thinking of watching this one, don't! If you want to see a good one, watch Price's. It may not have all the special effects but it is worth watching, just for Price's performance alone.
The Murder of Mary Phagan (1988)
Very good mini-series
This is one of the best mini-series I've seen in a long time. They get the story right and is acted out very well, esp. by Lemmon and Gallagher. It was also nice to see Kevin Spacey in one of his first roles. If you get a chance, watch this one. It will be worth it.
Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949)
Funny film with lots of great dancing!
I thought Sinatra and Kelly were great in "Anchors Aweigh". I had no idea they could be even better together. This is such a funny film with great dance numbers from Kelly and singing from Sinatra. Plus having Esther Williams isn't too bad either. If you feel like having a good laugh and watching something that doesn't include someone saying the 'F' word every 2 minutes, then this is for you.
Adam's Rib (1949)
I never knew Spencer Tracy could be so funny!
This is one of the best Tracy/Hepburn films. I wasn't expecting to see such a great comedic performance from Spencer Tracy. He was great! I love the scene with the licorice gun and how Katharine and Spencer keeping look under the desks in the courtroom at each other. It was also a treat to see Judy Holliday and Tom Ewell (whom I loved in "The Seven Year Itch"). If you get a chance to catch this film, believe me when I say you will not be wasting your time.
Deep Blue Sea (1999)
Kind of silly but good
This movie is kind of silly but it did have it's good scary moments. I liked Thomas Jane's performance. I just thought he was good for the role of Carter. Sure during some of the scenes I thought he was nuts but hey he lived right? The most surprising part was when Samuel L. Jackson met his fate. I couldnt believe it! Happened so fast. Anyway, it's not the best movie but I think it's worth watching at least once.
Carousel (1956)
Great musical
This is a really good movie and has wonderful music. One of the best by Rodgers & Hammerstein. Shirley Jones and Gordon Macrae are perfect for their roles. Personally, I think the best parts are during the end of the film when Macrae finally gets to see his little girl. I thought I could make it through without crying. Boy, was I wrong. The ending is great and just tugs at your heart and makes you want more. If you like musicals, you'll love this. If you don't then you're missing out on a wonderful movie.
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Best musical ever made
This is one of the best films ever made! Just about every musical number is wonderful. Personally, I think the best one (other then the title song) is "Moses" performed by Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor. Also "Make 'em Laugh" performed by O'Connor is great. I can't picture anyone else playing Cosmo. It's ashame Gene didnt win anything for his performance in this. It was just amazing. Everything was amazing! I'm glad to see that the AFI ranked it at #10! If you don't have anything to do on a Sunday, go rent this movie, believe me, you wont regret it!
A Hole in the Head (1959)
Nice, warm film
This was a good movie. Frank Sinatra and Edward G. Robinson are good in this but I love the young boy's performance. He was just great in this. This movie introduced "High Hopes" or "the ant song" which is great! This is a great movie with a good ending! Anyone would enjoy this!
Patch Adams (1998)
Enjoyable
I wasnt sure if I'd like this movie when I saw it but I found it very enjoyable. It makes you laugh and cry. Robin Williams is wonderful as the doctor who thinks that laughter is the best medicine. Good performances by all. If you feel like having a good laugh and possibly a good cry, then you'll enjoy this. I give it a 7/10.
What Dreams May Come (1998)
Good movie!
I really enjoyed this movie. Good performances by Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Annabella Sciorra. What I really enjoyed about it was how the family was reunited again after death. Just to see how happy they were was great. A good movie that anyone would enjoy.
My Fair Lady (1964)
One of the best musicals!
I loved this movie! Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison were magnificent! My favorite number from this movie is "Wouldnt it be Loverly". I love that one and find myself singing along every time! It was a little weird to hear Audrey with that accent in the beginning but I still loved it! I give this a 9/10!
