I stumbled upon the 2019 Vietnamese romantic comedy "Chi Tro Ly Cua Anh" (aka "My Dear Assistant") here in 2023. And with it being an Asian movie that I hadn't already seen, much less actually heard about, of course I opted to sit down and watch the movie.
Writer Kay Nguyen didn't really managed to capture my interest with the script for this movie. I found the pacing of the narrative too slow paced, mundane and rather pointless. So this movie was a bitter pill to swallow. In fact, I endured only 45 minutes of the 113 minutes that the movie ran for. But I simply could not stand anymore of the boredom, so I opted to turn off the movie.
And I am not overly familiar with Vietnamese cinema, so I didn't recognize any of the actors or actresses on the cast list. The acting performances were a bit wooden though, which didn't really help to sell the movie as being entertaining.
For a romantic comedy, then this movie was lacking greatly in both departments. I wasn't brought to any laughs throughout the 45 minutes I suffered through, nor were there any particular chemistry between the leading actor and leading actress.
I am not going to return to attempt to watch the rest of this movie, simply because the storyline failed to capture my interest entirely. There are far better romantic comedies in the Asian cinema, movies that actually offer elements of comedy and romance to the viewers.
My rating of director My Tam's 2019 romantic comedy lands on a three out of ten stars.
