Argentina’s preeminent writer-director Lucia Puenzo, who has proven her showrunner chops with “La Jauria” for Amazon Prime and eco-thriller series “Cromo,” has partnered with Gaumont, the producers of Netflix mega-hit “Narcos,” in a multi-project development deal.
Among the projects in the pact is “Futuro Desierto,” a near-future, dystopian thriller that turns on a robotics engineer who moves with his family to an isolated town in Patagonia where he is ordered to test the first humanoid robots in secret. Puenzo, whose notable film credits include the Cannes-selected “Xxy” and “The German Doctor,” will co-showrun and direct multiple episodes with her brother, Nicolas Puenzo, co-director of “Cromo” and “La Jauría.”
Another project, tentatively titled “This is Not a Love Song,” follows the extraordinary life of Tina Modotti, the eccentric Italian feminist photographer, model, actress and revolutionary political activist who was among the leading lights of cosmopolitan Mexico City in the early 1920s,...

Nicole Kidman’s 2001 haunted house film “The Others,” directed by Chilean helmer Alejandro Amenabar, is getting a remake.
“The Others,” set in 1945 in a remote country house on the British island of Jersey, centered on Kidman’s character, Grace Stewart, discovering unknown “others” living in her home. One of her children says she has seen a group of people in the house several times — a man, a woman, an old woman and a child named Victor — who claimed “the house is theirs.”
“The Others” was a box office hit, grossing more than $200 million on a $17 million budget. The film won seven of Spain’s Goya Awards, including best film and best director for Amenabar.
Universal Pictures optioned the rights to “The Others” from Sentient Entertainment, which acquired control of the rights in a heated bidding war in April from FilmSharks-owned The Remake Co. and Video Mercury. Sentient made the deal...

Several major films primed to begin production just got some big bucks to shoot in California.
Netflix’s Russo Brothers-directed The Gray Man, the Jessica Chastain-starrer Losing Clementine and an untitled Jordan Peele project for Universal were among nine films allocated $50,053,000 collectively in the last round of Golden State tax credits. Though a return to production has been slow going as California’s coronavirus surges spiked in the last month, all nine films are expected to begin production by early next year.
As you can see in the chart below, the Chris Evans- and Ryan Gosling-starring thriller The Gray Man snagged the largest sum in the first round of what is being termed “Program 3.0” of the incentive initiative.
With $20 million, the movie (which Deadline revealed last month) received just a touch less than what Captain Marvel and Sherlock Holmes 3 got from the California Film Commission program in 2017 and 2019, respectively.
