Jorge Gutierrez calls the series a Mexican, funny Lord of the Rings.
At the beginning of the 1st episode you can see the original El Tigre
Diego Luna and Zoe Saldana played love interests three times. First in Terminal, then in The Book of Life, and then here in Maya and the Three.
In the scene where Lady Micte is married you can see 3 of the characters from The Book of Life. Which Kate del Castillo starred in as a nearly identical character, La Muerte.
Maya and the Three and The Book of Life, both have a very similar set ups, including deals with Mexican culture, geometric animation style, and involves a Dia De Los Muertos-type Underworld. Not to mention it shares many of the same voice cast including Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna, Kate del Castillo (who voices an almost identical character in both, Lady Micte here and Le Murete, in The Book of Life), Jorge R. Gutiérrez, Danny Trejo, Cheech Martin, Gabriel Iglesias, Eric Bauza, and Grey Griffin.
