- Emma Corrigan (Alexandra Daddario) is a New York junior marketing representative at Panda, an organic food products company, in Chicago for a sales meeting with a client which will earn her a promotion if she lands. However, the client declines, stating their target demographic is not interested in Panda products, and a last-ditch effort by Emma ends with the client getting sprayed with an energy drink. On the flight back to New York, a flight attendant takes pity on Emma and offers her a vacant first-class seat, where she takes advantage of the complimentary champagne and is seated next to a handsome stranger.
When the flight experiences heavy turbulence, Emma, inebriated, believes they're about to die and begins revealing her personal and professional woes to him, most notably her dissatisfaction with her current boyfriend Connor (David Ebert). However, she ends up revealing too much to him even when they land safely and immediately flees the plane. She is greeted at the airport by Connor, who suggests they move in together. A drunken Emma agrees, but she quickly regrets it when she wakes up the next morning.
When Emma returns to work, she is berated by her manager Cybill (Laverne Cox) for failing to land the client before being asked to clean up her desk in preparation for the visit of Panda CEO Jack Harper (Tyler Hoechlin), who is returning to work after an extended hiatus following the death of his business partner Pete Laddler. When Jack arrives, Emma immediately recognizes him as the man from the plane, and he recognizes her as well. Emma goes to speak to Jack about revealing her secrets on the plane, and he agrees not to say anything or fire her, but he requests that Emma not reveal that he was in Chicago, to which she agrees. Jack, however, playfully teases Emma about various minor secrets.
During a marketing meeting to discuss the flailing performance of one of their product lines Panda Bites, Emma suggests that the target demographic for the product should not be Millennials, the company-wide target demographic, but the elderly, citing her grandfather and his friends who order panda bites 3 times a day. However, Connor, who works in market research, and other coworkers suggest that because the product isn't selling with their target demographic, it should be axed. Emma later asks Nick the marketing rep responsible for Panda Bites, for a portion of the marketing budget to test her theory in an elderly focused magazine.
When Jack tells Emma that he senses her dissatisfaction with Connor, she calls Connor to the archive room for spontaneous sex in an attempt to reinvigorate their relationship. When Connor refuses and suggests they don't need to reinvigorate their relationship, Emma breaks up with him. Later, Jack calls in Emma to check in on her, as well as ask her out to dinner, to which she agrees. On their date, Jack admits that he has been romantically interested in Emma ever since she revealed her secrets to him and the two begin a passionate relationship. However, while Emma becomes more open with him, Jack remains secretive. Emma's roommate and best friend Lissy (Sunita Mani) cautions her that their relationship may be too one-sided.
Jack goes on television to discuss re-branding strategies and new female health products for Panda with the office watching. When he describes the company's new target demographic as the "girl on the street", he is asked to go into greater detail. Jack then begins describing Emma, listing all of her secrets, and although he doesn't name her, all her coworkers identify it as her and begin mocking her. Emma leaves humiliated, while Jack realizes too late what he's done. Emma refuses to take Jack's calls. When Jack finds her at a coffee shop, Emma demands to know why Jack has been going to Chicago. Jack is reluctant to tell her, citing trust issues, but Emma says it's unfair that she's been open with him while he remains secretive and leaves. Lissy and their other roommate Gemma (Kimiko Glenn) suggest Emma get even with Jack by revealing his secrets. When Emma tells them about Chicago, Gemma offers to ask a tabloid reporter friend for help, but Emma declines.
At a marketing meeting, Cybill mentions that the ad in the elderly magazine paid off as sales for Panda Bites have increased significantly. When she congratulates Nick, he takes full credit for its success without mentioning it was Emma's idea. Emma then calls him out, citing her remarks at the previous meeting, and Cybill gives her the credit. Emma then requests the promotion she was promised when she would provide opportunity for the company, which she did, and Cybill agrees. In private, Cybill tells her that while she earned the promotion, she will have to work much harder to be taken seriously now that everyone knows she slept with her boss.
At a dance recital Lissy is performing in, Emma runs into Jack, who has come to reveal the reason for his trips to Chicago: Pete had a daughter, to whom Jack is the godparent, and Jack has been working to ensure that she stays out of the spotlight so she can have a normal life. He says that only a trusted handful of people know about her, and Emma forgives him. However, Gemma arrives with her tabloid reporter friend Mick (Judah Friedlander) to get the scoop on Jack's trips to Chicago. Emma tries to get them to leave, but she is too late as Jack sees them and leaves in anger. Emma tracks him down on a plane back to Chicago. She assures him she didn't tell the reporter about his goddaughter and tearfully expresses gratitude that he loved her when she was her true self. When Emma is sent back to the coach cabin, Jack follows her and trades seats with the passenger next to her. He then begins to reveal all of his secrets to her.
