The year 2022 in film, looking back, was a year of Grandiosity. Yes, Grandiosity, with a capital G. In this year’s Best Picture category, we have such hits as ‘Avatar 2: The Way of Water’, ‘Elvis’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, and ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, whose title itself even nods to Grandiosity. Even Todd Field’s ‘Tár’ has a sense of epic proportions to it. Things to do: Subscribe to The Hollywood Insider’s YouTube Channel, by clicking here. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which oversees the Oscars, was founded on May 11th, 1927. Seven years shy of their 100th birthday, they announced new diversity and inclusion rules that will begin in 2022 and take full effect in 2024, the 96th Oscar ceremony. For films to meet the standards, one of the lead actors, or a significant supporting actor, must be from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group. An additional way to meet this standard is if thirty percent of the actors in secondary or minor roles fit the following: women, LGBTQ+, underrepresented racial or ethnic group, or people with cognitive or physical disabilities. These new rules have received mostly positive feedback, but many critics think these new rules won’t reward the worthiest films,...

Every year there are many movies that release around the same time of year, close to awards season, all vying to get a coveted nomination. Some of these films are described as “Oscar bait” films, a term used to describe a few different kinds of films that all have one thing in common--their appeal to Oscar voters. These films fall under four categories: the historical drama, the musician biopic, the melodrama, and the quirky indie comedy.

The Oscar for Best Picture may be the highest honor that a film could earn, but the Academy members who vote on the matter are anything but infallible--in fact, some of them don’t even watch the nominated movies at all. Audiences are often disappointed by the pick for Best Picture, but subjectivity mandates that there will always be some reasonable dissent--that said, this article will look back at some of the most widely agreed upon upsets that warrant a closer inspection.

The Four Seasons is a world-renowned hotel collection that promises only the best for its guests. The first location opened up in 1961 in a town in Toronto with an innovative new approach to the luxury hotel model. Architect Isadore Sharp wanted his new hotel to approach luxury travel with a guest-centric worldview. He would be entirely focused on what the guest would experience, and everything else about the hotel, no matter how beautiful or amazing in its own right, would revolve around this. It’s proven to be a successful way to run a hotel collection, as the Four Seasons has expanded significantly since then. Its first decade only saw three locations open: now, there are 124 properties internationally. Things to do: Subscribe to The Hollywood Insider’s YouTube Channel, by clicking here. Photo: 'Tree of Life' Terrence Malick’s ‘Tree of Life’ is not your average family film. It’s filled with abstract imagery such as scenes of the Earth’s formation and dinosaurs living and breathing in the grassy areas as a reminder to the viewer that dinosaurs walked the earth 65 million years ago. Despite the abstract introduction to the film, the story primarily focuses on the O’Brien Family of five members: Mr. O’Brien (played by Brad Pitt), Mrs. O’Brien (played by Jessica Chastain), and their three sons in 1950s Waco, Texas. Though the film puts the eldest son, Jack, in focus as he struggles with his parent’s different views of their wisdom. Photo: ‘The Protégé' With a star-studded and charming ensemble cast, ‘The Protégé’ should have been an easy home run. Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Maggie Q, all legitimate A-list stars who, in their own rights, put forth endearing performances in the most recent addition to Martin Campbell’s top-heavy filmography. However, a myriad of narrative missteps and genre cliches relegates ‘The Protégé’ to the bargain bin of the shoot-em-up genre. In recent years, there has been a plethora of neon-soaked, gun-running blockbusters hitting the silver screen, ‘The Guest’, ‘Atomic Blonde’, ‘Gunpowder Milkshake’, ‘Birds of Prey’, and most notably, ‘John Wick.’ Most of these films are blatant Wick duplicates and that's not necessarily a bad thing, some of these movies work, some of them don't. But there are certainly a few things these films all have in common: Gratuitous violence taking precedence over narrative structure, impressive set pieces, and a hyper-stylized visual style.

Photo: ‘The Suicide Squad’/Warner Bros. Pictures Few films have had a rockier road to existence than the latest outing in the ever-contentious Dceu; ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021). Five years ago, audiences revolted against a studio-slaughtered corpse of the same name (though crucially lacking a definite article - arguably the film’s biggest failing), David Ayer’s ‘Suicide Squad’ (2016). While readily massacred by merciless critics and disheartened fans, the Oscar-winning (?!?) neon-laced nightmare wound up grossing three-quarters of a billion dollars at the global box office, proving that even if Ayer’s monstrosity woefully failed in execution, the bare bones held a clear recipe for success in better hands. Photo: 'Anna'/HBO Max Following a Russian Kgb agent completing missions to one day be free to live a life of her choosing, Anna is about an incredibly skilled woman who takes down target after target, never once fighting to demonstrate her skill or showcase her capabilities: everyone knows she is lethal. It is refreshing and exciting to see such a well-rounded performance, by all the actors involved in this film, as well as the unique nature of the narrative structure. Action films so often fall into stale patterns that focus solely on male characters as well as simply displaying action sequence after action sequence with no true underlying plot motive to keep all of the characters in motion. Anna is a film that seems to have fallen under a lot of people’s radar, although I believe it deserves more recognition. Related article: The Power of Positivity: Ikorodu Bois...

Photo: 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower'/Summit Entertainment Inspirational Cinema is important for our sanity, especially in this overtly chaotic world. We are creative beings. That’s just a fact. And a great way of creating is through inspiration which in turn comes from observing something spectacular. Go online for just a second and look up inspirational movies. The lists are endless. From biopics to fantasy/sci-fi and everything in between, these films last because they provided positivity. Sure many films can be great but are pretty depressing at their core, however, it is those stories that provide inspiration for every living generation, old and new, that lasts decades. Humanity needs inspiration for ammunition. And with Cinema now acting as the number one medium to deliver such ammo, the number of new artists that will be birthed will stretch far and wide.
