As if George Lucas‘ 1999 Star Wars prequel wasn’t divisive enough, The Phantom Menace nearly ended on a complicated twist.

Marking the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, concept and storyboard artist Iain McCaig recently revealed an exchange between Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his mentor Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) that Lucas ultimately cut at the last minute.

“It’s interesting how things evolve. A recent interview with “Star Wars” concept and storyboard artist Iain McCaig (via StarWars.com) to mark “The Phantom Menace’s” 25th anniversary reveals that George Lucas was originally planning a bombshell twist for the movie. McGregor’s Obi-Wan and Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon were originally swapped, meaning Neeson was playing the real Obi-Wan and thus the real Obi-Wan died.

Ewan McGregor is keeping hopes alive about a potential second season for the Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

During an appearance at L.A. Comic-Con, the actor hinted that Disney and Lucasfilm are “exploring” potential ideas featuring the Jedi Master.

“Obviously, between the end of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and when Alec Guinness is Obi-Wan Kenobi, there’s got to be another few stories in there,” he said during the panel.

McGregor played the Jedi in all three Star Wars prequels and the Disney+ limited series released in 2022. Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place ten years before the first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, starts, with Alec Guinness playing the Jedi.

The actor attended a panel at LA Comic Con yesterday, where his co-star Hayden Christensen was also in attendance. Along with McGregor and Christensen, the cast of The Mandalorian, including Ming-Na Wen, Giancarlo Esposito, and Emily Swallow, were also in the house.

McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi was last seen in Season 1 of his self-titled series back in 2021. Despite Ewan McGregor sharing his excitement to potentially get to play the character again, word has been any sort of follow-up was not happening. 

In fact, Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy previously told fans Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 was not in "active development" but made sure to not count it out entirely.

Disney has hit a wall regarding Lucasfilm and Star Wars projects. Numerous films were announced but never materialized. We are still set to get “The Mandalorian and Grogu” film, but the last we heard, a script wasn’t even completed for the Rey film rumored at one point to be called “Heir to the Empire.” Disney+ has lower viewership with each “Star Wars” show they put out. “The Acolyte” was a complete dud, and a second season was canceled.

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor hopes to continue his iconic role of Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars franchise. McGregor first portrayed the character in 1999’s “The Phantom Menace” and went on to appear in two additional prequel films. He recently starred in the Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” released this year.

In a new interview, McGregor expressed interest in playing Kenobi again. He told Variety there may still be untold stories that could be shown between the prequel films and Kenobi’s next appearance mentoring Luke Skywalker. “I’d be open to returning if the opportunity came,” McGregor said.

McGregor has long been connected to the Jedi master, known for his wisdom and skills with a lightsaber. His initial casting in the late 1990s helped launch the Star Wars prequels. The first-ever “Star Wars” movie, “A New Hope,” won six Academy Awards in 1978 including Best Editing and Best Original Score while George Lucas was nominated for Best Director. The biggest accomplishment, however, is arguably that Alec Guinness reaped a Best Supporting Actor citation for his turn as Obi-Wan Kenobi. That is the sole acting nomination “Star Wars” movies have earned at the Oscars.

The movies, in total, have won seven Oscars from a total of 37 nominations, but it is only Guinness who has been recognized for his acting across a total of 11 live-action “Star Wars” flicks, which includes all nine films in the main Skywalker Saga plus the spin-off films “Rogue One” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” However, plenty of the franchise’s cast have landed nominations for other projects at other major awards groups.

Given that it’s Emmys season, we’re going to focus on the Emmys.

Two years later, "Obi-Wan Kenobi" feels like a strange entry in the larger Disney/Lucasfilm TV library. It's a show with some very cool moments (like Obi-Wan facing off against Darth Vader) and an incredibly satisfying Leia storyline, but it also meanders quite a bit and has some poor visuals. Well, at least George Lucas seemed to love it.

Part of what makes the show kind of disjointed is that it very much feels like a movie stretched out to be a TV show, with certain ideas scaled down to fit a TV budget and scope, and others stretched to encompass multiple hours of storytelling. After "The Mandalorian" season 2 started the trend, "Kenobi" also cemented the TV arm of Lucasfilm as being driven by cameos. Yet, despite many references and Glup Shitto appearances, we never got the one cameo that would have genuinely mattered to this story: Commander Cody.

George Lucas doesn’t think “Star Wars” is colorblind. In fact, the writer/director wants to remind audiences that the space-set film franchise is dealing with robots and aliens, not race.

While receiving the honorary Palme d’Or in the closing night ceremony at Cannes 2024, Lucas called out critics who complained about the predominantly white casting of the franchise.
