As if George Lucas‘ 1999 Star Wars prequel wasn’t divisive enough, The Phantom Menace nearly ended on a complicated twist.
Marking the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, concept and storyboard artist Iain McCaig recently revealed an exchange between Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his mentor Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) that Lucas ultimately cut at the last minute.
“It’s interesting how things evolve. For a time, the older Jedi was named Obi-Wan and the younger Jedi was named Qui-Gon,” McCaig told StarWars.com. “It was very poignant that at the end, as Obi-Wan dies and Qui-Gon defeats Darth Maul and stays with his Master as he passes away, he not only takes on his Master’s quest, but he takes on his name. Qui-Gon becomes Obi-Wan.”
He continued, “That’s why when you see Alec Guinness in A New Hope, he puts his hood down and goes,...

Love it or hate it, “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” is at least widely beloved for its casting of Ewan McGregor as young Obi-Wan Kenobi. A recent interview with “Star Wars” concept and storyboard artist Iain McCaig (via StarWars.com) to mark “The Phantom Menace’s” 25th anniversary reveals that George Lucas was originally planning a bombshell twist for the movie. McGregor’s Obi-Wan and Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon were originally swapped, meaning Neeson was playing the real Obi-Wan and thus the real Obi-Wan died.
“For a time, the older Jedi was named Obi-Wan and the younger Jedi was named Qui-Gon,” McCaig said. “It was very poignant that at the end, as Obi-Wan dies and Qui-Gon defeats Darth Maul and stays with his Master as he passes away, he not only takes on his Master’s quest, but he takes on his name. The Mustafar battle is a famous fight scene in ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.’ It takes place on the volcanic planet Mustafar between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
They fight because Anakin has turned to the dark side and betrayed the Jedi. The battle is intense and dramatic, with lava flowing around them, and it ends with a tragic defeat for Anakin.
The battle gave us some of the most iconic scenes in fiction in general, but it also provided us with some dubious strategies and some really awkward lines, high ground anyone?
In any case, during Spacecon Christensen finally shed some light on the details regarding the iconic fight.
Christensen joked that Anakin jumped because of “the arrogance of youth.” He then suggested that Anakin thought he could beat Obi-Wan Kenobi because he knew how Obi-Wan had defeated Darth Maul in ‘The Phantom Menace.’

In the past few years, Disney has gambled big on "Star Wars," releasing several new streaming shows within the "Star Wars" universe on their streaming service, Disney+. Unfortunately, the gamble hasn't totally worked for the franchise and the shows haven't been able to gather enough momentum for multiple seasons, with "The Acolyte" axed after just one season and "The Book of Boba Fett" and "Obi-Wan Kenobi" unlikely to ever see a season 2. "The Book of Boba Fett" was a little complicated because it tied in so deeply with "The Mandalorian," while "Obi-Wan Kenobi" was originally planned as a movie trilogy that was turned into a limited series, with no real plans for a season 2.
Despite the fact that it doesn't look like "Obi-Wan Kenobi" will get a second season and the show is officially done, series star and Obi-Wan himself Ewan McGregor would love to reprise the role and has...

The Force of positive thinking continues to be strong with Ewan McGregor, who said at L.A. Comic Con this past weekend that he and… someone… are “exploring” possibilities for a second season of Disney+’s live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars series.

Despite airing in 2022, Disney+ has yet to formally cancel its Obi-Wan Kenobi show, nor renew it for another season. The Star Wars series has spent two years in a sort of limbo. But star Ewan McGregor has always voiced his desire to continue the journey, and most recently, he revealed that Disney is indeed quietly exploring ideas for another installment.
While being interviewed on stage at L.A. Comic Con, McGregor was asked about the status of Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2. Thankfully, he wasn't as secretive as everyone expected him to be, saying Disney is "exploring" ideas for a potential sophomore season.
As for what he'd like a second season to entail, McGregor naturally wants more flashback scenes with Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker. The first season had fan-service galore in that respect, bringing back both actors to play the parts that last occupied in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Of course,...

Ewan McGregor Says Disney & Lucasfilm Are “Exploring” Ideas For ‘Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2
Ewan McGregor is keeping hopes alive about a potential second season for the Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi.
During an appearance at L.A. Comic-Con, the actor hinted that Disney and Lucasfilm are “exploring” potential ideas featuring the Jedi Master.
“Obviously, between the end of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and when Alec Guinness is Obi-Wan Kenobi, there’s got to be another few stories in there,” he said during the panel.
McGregor played the Jedi in all three Star Wars prequels and the Disney+ limited series released in 2022. Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place ten years before the first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, starts, with Alec Guinness playing the Jedi.
As far as what McGregor would like to do in the Star Wars universe, he said, “There’s a couple of things. I’d quite like to wear that armor. I was speaking to someone earlier from the Clone Wars.

Ewan McGregor recently opened up about his ideas for the potential season 2 of Obi-Wan Kenobi including a flashback to the Clone Wars era.

Disney has hit a wall regarding Lucasfilm and Star Wars projects. Numerous films were announced but never materialized. We are still set to get “The Mandalorian and Grogu” film, but the last we heard, a script wasn’t even completed for the Rey film rumored at one point to be called “Heir to the Empire.” Disney+ has lower viewership with each “Star Wars” show they put out. “The Acolyte” was a complete dud, and a second season was canceled.
Maybe now it’s time to go back to formula and bring back fan-favorite characters / actors to headline a “Star Wars” show or film.

Obi-Wan Kenobi took us to a time in the history of the Republic that is pretty well documented, with shows like Star Wars Rebels. However, it took a completely new take on the ever-faithful, ever-confident Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, the show ended on quite an interesting note, one which could lead to the stories that Ewan McGregor wants to explore.

Ewan McGregor finally returned as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a series released on Disney+ in 2022. While it was a success, there was no word on a potential second season. When the show was released on Blu-ray/4K, it was billed as ‘The Complete Series’ rather than ‘The Complete First Season,’ which seemed to indicate that Lucasfilm wasn’t going to bring the show back. However, McGregor told Variety that he hopes he gets the chance to do another season.

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor hopes to continue his iconic role of Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars franchise. McGregor first portrayed the character in 1999’s “The Phantom Menace” and went on to appear in two additional prequel films. He recently starred in the Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” released this year.
In a new interview, McGregor expressed interest in playing Kenobi again. He told Variety there may still be untold stories that could be shown between the prequel films and Kenobi’s next appearance mentoring Luke Skywalker. “I’d be open to returning if the opportunity came,” McGregor said.
McGregor has long been connected to the Jedi master, known for his wisdom and skills with a lightsaber. His initial casting in the late 1990s helped launch the Star Wars prequels. Fans anxiously awaited his return in “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” which explored the character’s life on Tatooine during a key period after “Revenge of the Sith.

Having witnessed the offensive response to John Boyega’s 2014 casting in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” when Naomi Ackie was cast in Episode IX of the popular franchise, “Rise of Skywalker,” she took no chances in letting online trolls get to her. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter for a recent interview on her career, “Blink Twice” star Ackie reflected on being told by insiders to delete her Instagram in order to avoid any potential backlash that may come from her casting.
“I had heard that anyone of color would get wrapped up in some racist shit,” she said. “I didn’t want to have a place for them to come with their comments.”
However, once Disney realized she’d deleted her platform our of fear, they worked to get her back on and feeling safe in the process.

The first-ever “Star Wars” movie, “A New Hope,” won six Academy Awards in 1978 including Best Editing and Best Original Score while George Lucas was nominated for Best Director. The biggest accomplishment, however, is arguably that Alec Guinness reaped a Best Supporting Actor citation for his turn as Obi-Wan Kenobi. That is the sole acting nomination “Star Wars” movies have earned at the Oscars.
The movies, in total, have won seven Oscars from a total of 37 nominations, but it is only Guinness who has been recognized for his acting across a total of 11 live-action “Star Wars” flicks, which includes all nine films in the main Skywalker Saga plus the spin-off films “Rogue One” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” However, plenty of the franchise’s cast have landed nominations for other projects at other major awards groups.
Given that it’s Emmys season, we’re going to focus on the Emmys.

Two years later, "Obi-Wan Kenobi" feels like a strange entry in the larger Disney/Lucasfilm TV library. It's a show with some very cool moments (like Obi-Wan facing off against Darth Vader) and an incredibly satisfying Leia storyline, but it also meanders quite a bit and has some poor visuals. Well, at least George Lucas seemed to love it.
Part of what makes the show kind of disjointed is that it very much feels like a movie stretched out to be a TV show, with certain ideas scaled down to fit a TV budget and scope, and others stretched to encompass multiple hours of storytelling. After "The Mandalorian" season 2 started the trend, "Kenobi" also cemented the TV arm of Lucasfilm as being driven by cameos. Yet, despite many references and Glup Shitto appearances, we never got the one cameo that would have genuinely mattered to this story: Commander Cody.

Apart from ‘The Mandalorian,’ viewership Wars titles on Disney+ has often fizzled out as their seasons progressed.
Star Wars may be set in a galaxy far, far away, but Disney is hoping that ratings success for its Star Wars TV series on Disney+ is not on the other side of the universe. New data from Luminate is helping to quantify the struggles that Disney+ Star Wars shows have had in maintaining their audiences, and it demonstrates the problem is getting worse. Ahead of the season finale of the streamer’s latest Star Wars series “The Acolyte” on Tuesday evening, I’ll dive into the numbers and lay out just how badly some of these series have performed.
Key Details: “The Acolyte” was the most-watched Disney+ premiere of the year, but its third episode saw a 22% decline in viewership. “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and “Ahsoka” also saw double-digit viewership drops between their first and second weeks of availability.

It’s no secret that the release of ‘The Acolyte’ caused quite a stir in the community. It’s partially due to the show being perceived as “woke” (not that many arguments for that) and partially due to the show being, not as good as we expected (plenty of arguments supporting this.)

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ is the latest installment in the franchise, premiering three weeks ago amidst significant review-boosting and review-bombing. It has become infamous for its controversial elements, including canon-breaking decisions and a substantial $180 million budget for eight episodes, each around 45 minutes long.
Despite its hefty budget, some question whether ‘The Acolyte’ justifies its cost. While featuring impressive action sequences and VFX, recent episodes have been criticized for minimal development and sparse lightsaber action.
Recently, one of the show’s writers explained that Kelnacca’s death couldn’t be shown on-screen due to budget constraints and the need to maintain point-of-view integrity. Most Disney+ shows arrive on the streamer early in the morning so that fans can watch as soon as they wake up, but that won’t be the case for ‘The Acolyte.’
Did “The Acolyte” miss an opportunity to release on Star Wars Day? May the Fourth would have been a perfect opportunity to roll the show out and take full advantage of the joke, but for whatever reason Disney+ decided to wait another month and debut the new live-action Star Wars series on Tuesday, June 4. The show will differ from other major premieres on Disney+, in that it will release its first episode at a special time to help the series feel more like a major TV debut of old.
Key Details: “The Acolyte” will release its first episode at 9 p.m. Et on Tuesday, June 4. Subsequent episodes will be available at the same time on subsequent Tuesdays. There...

George Lucas doesn’t think “Star Wars” is colorblind. In fact, the writer/director wants to remind audiences that the space-set film franchise is dealing with robots and aliens, not race.
While receiving the honorary Palme d’Or in the closing night ceremony at Cannes 2024, Lucas called out critics who complained about the predominantly white casting of the franchise.
“They would say, ‘It’s all white men,'” Lucas said. “Most of the people are aliens! The idea is you’re supposed to accept people for what they are, whether they’re big and furry or whether they’re green or whatever. The idea is all people are equal.”
In fact, Lucas pointed to how the only species discrimination is between humans, aliens, and robots.
“That was a way of saying, you know, people are always discriminating against something and sooner or later, that’s what’s going to happen,...

Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey have their first “Jurassic World” co-star. THR reports that Rupert Friend is the latest actor cast to star in Gareth Edward‘s upcoming installment. Friend also joins Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, the only other name on the call sheet, as the film inches closer to its mid-June production start.

Friend in a big-budget blockbuster? Maybe it was bound to happen. The British actor’s biggest career roles up to this point have been for Wes Anderson, in “The French Dispatch, “Asteroid City,” and “The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar And Three More.” But Friend, typically in supporting roles, has a career that stretches back two decades. Other recent roles include the Disney+ limited series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and the Apple TV+ series “High Desert.”

On May 4th, as part of the 2024 Podathan charity streaming event benefiting the Make-a-Wish Foundation, members of Lucasfilm's "Star Wars" story team Pablo Hidalgo and Matt Martin spoke to the hosts of the Full of Sith podcast. The show has been producing almost weekly episodes since 2013 and has covered plenty of "Star Wars" news, and Hidalgo and Martin, among others, have been frequent guests on the podcast over the years.
Hidalgo spoke to my co-host Holly Frey ("Stuff You Missed in History Class") in a wide-ranging interview about his work with Lucasfilm and on "Star Wars". As someone who is intimately involved with the storytelling process at Lucasfilm, Hidalgo elaborated on how that works and what he really does. He's been working at Lucasfilm for over 20 years and was on set for most of the prequels and was even in charge of the revolutionary web-cam that was on set for "Attack of the Clones.

In fact, the Lucasfilm founder is a huge fan of a recent Star Wars series that didn't exactly achieve the same level of success as some of Disney's streaming offerings like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
