Pepper (born in 1970) was 22 when Scodelario was born (1992), which would be, by the standards of modern western societies, a fairly young but still perfectly plausible age to become father. Add to this that Scodelario's character is still at College and therefore at least 6 years younger than Scodelario herself!

Alligators are not generally aggressive toward humans, preferring smaller prey. In a hurricane, many other animals are easier prey than humans. American crocodiles are less abundant and less well known, but significantly more likely to attack humans.

The only reason to choose the American Alligator as a human predator is that people are aware of them, and the media heavily publicizes the few infrequent attacks, usually on small children.
