The Academy’s Visual Effects long list of 20 finalists were notified Thursday and the results shook up the Oscar race: Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” — considered by many to be the frontrunner — did not make the cut despite a dazzling display of practical, in-camera effects and digital compositing for the Trinity explosion, and particle simulations for the subatomic world shot in cloud tanks.
IndieWire reached out to Universal, Academy VFX branch members, and visual effect studio Dneg for comment, but no explanation was offered for the exclusion of “Oppenheimer.” However, sources speculated that the determining factor was the entire film included only 150 invisible VFX shots. Two other potential contributors: Nolan’s early comments about there being no CGI in “Oppenheimer,” and the pushback when very few Dneg artists were listed in the end credits.

It was freezing cold. The altitude was 11,000 feet. There was the occasional avalanche. No cranes. No dollies. But by getting as close to the Andes’ Valley of Tears as possible, the site of the 1972 Uruguayan rugby team’s infamous crash, Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona (“The Impossible”), his producing partner Belén Atienza, and their cast and crew brought the dead back to life. Sixteen survivors walked away from that crash after 72 days. 42 died.
The Spanish entry for the Oscars, “The Society of the Snow”, is about the contract the living made: They offered their bodies to keep their friends alive after their deaths.
“The people in the plane, the people who went through that story, were offering their bodies to their friends, in case they need them,” said Bayona. “And in that idea, there is something transcendent because it’s this unconscious realization that you and I are the same thing.

World-premiering in competition at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, Israeli espionage thriller “Trust No One” marries the pedigree and primetime polish of past series like “Traitor” and “Valley of Tears” with techno-anxieties tied to the here-and-now – specifically with regards to the security state and modern cyber warfare.
“Israel has become one of the largest global exporters of spy ware,” says co-creator Daniel Amsel. “Only, those technological weapons can undermine democracy and lead to the death of truth. So we wanted to thread those very sensitive topics into an entertaining and fast-paced thriller that deals with the loneliness of leadership and the difficulties of parenthood, among other themes.”
Created by Amsel alongside Ron Leshem (“Euphoria”) and Amit Cohen (“False Flag”), and directed by Ofir Lobel, the nine-part drama follows Itamar (“Fire Dance” award-winner Yehuda Levi), the youngest ever head of Israel’s Shin Bet security agency turned target of a cyber-security leak.

When Deep Blue, a computer, beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997 some journalists found comfort in the thought that A.I. would never be able to write like Shakespeare.
Well, think again. Or, better, check out the title sequence of Series Mania live action entry “Red Skies.”
Shared with Variety, it is being hailed by the series’ makers, including designer Merav Shaham, as the first ever title sequence made solely with Artificial Intelligence.
What’s so impressive – and perhaps even preoccupying for those who fear A.I. – is that the sequence is, more than technically brilliant or absolutely incoherent, highly touching in human terms and unexpectedly and sometime mysteriously poetic – the last qualities you might expect from A.I.
This is a major series as well, playing Series Mania main competition, backed in a just-announced deal by Len Blavatnik and Danny Cohen’s Access Entertainment, and counting among its creators on Ron Leshem,...

Expansive Paris-based media group Mediawan has picked up international sales rights to the Jerusalem-set ultra-orthodox drama “The Rabbi,” which participates in this year’s Series Mania Forum at its Co-Pro Pitching Sessions.
Abuses of power aren’t unique to any one nationality, gender, sexual orientation or religion. With “The Rabbi,” celebrated filmmaker Eytan Fox proposes a fictionalized drama inspired by a true story which shocked Jerusalem’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community that proves that such abuses can happen almost anywhere.
“The Rabbi” turns on a powerful and well-known university professor from Jerusalem’s ultra-orthodox community who uses his position to influence his male students into physical relationships. Although the students are all in their 20s and the relationships consensual, there is uproar when the truth comes out, both regarding the Rabbi engaging in relationships with his subordinates and the fact that this superstar clergyman is a closeted gay man.

For three weeks in October 1973, a group led by Egyptian and Syrian military waged war against Israeli forces across a number of different territorial areas in region. Known by various names, it is often referred to as the Yom Kippur War, so named for the Jewish holy day on which the fighting began. Other names for the conflict include the Ramadan War or the October War — but regardless of its moniker, the conflict led to the deaths of thousands of combatants and an eventual redrawing of territorial maps within the region.
“Valley of Tears,” a 10-part series currently airing on Israeli TV station Kan 11 and now streaming on HBO Max, examines the experiences of a number of soldiers in the midst of that unexpected battle. Though the series in the early going focuses on the perspective of the Israeli side of the conflict, this is not a homogenous exercise in heroic mythmaking.

1973’s Yom Kippur War is the focal point for HBO Max’s upcoming original series, “Valley of Tears.” Instead of creating a large scale approach to warfare, the creators—Ron Leshem, Amit Cohen, Yaron Zilberman, and Daniel Amse—are highlighting individual character arcs. The selected roles each draw attention to a seemingly forgotten segment of the conflict. Prominent aspects of the series include: “a famous bohemian television star in search of his estranged son, a newly enlisted soldier; a commander and his newly befriended intelligence analyst; tank crewman who represent Israel’s Black Panthers social justice reform movement; and a female officer who refuses to leave the battlefields, disobeying direct orders to evacuate.”

That’s not even to mention two intriguing projects that don’t have dates yet: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion Special and The Mystery of Db Cooper.

Hello, Jake Kanter here, and welcome to the latest edition of International Insider. This week, we ponder Mipcom’s slim pickings and examine the problems of production in a pandemic. Scroll on for news and analysis.
A Quiet Cannes
Modest Mip: And so, we have reached the end of perhaps the strangest Mipcom market ever. There is no doubt that coronavirus killed the buzz of this year’s Cannes gathering, despite the best efforts of organizer Reed Midem to capture the spirit of the market online. While there were some impressive speakers (special nod to a news-stuffed Q&a with Netflix’s Ted Sarandos) and some smart ways to interact via the Mipcom Online+ platform, it was clear that nothing can replicate the heat and light of a physical event.
Slow news week: One way of measuring the success of Mipcom is by the strength of news and gossip emanating from the market.

The reunion of Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray for the new A24/Apple release “On the Rocks” comes 17 years after their first collaboration on the Oscar-winning “Lost in Translation.” Such repeated pairings between directors and actors have been mainstay a in Hollywood since the earliest days of cinema. In the silent era, there were multiple films from D.W. Griffith and Lillian Gish and Charlie Chaplin and Edna Purviance.
One of the great partnerships during the Golden Age of Hollywood was John Ford and John Wayne. Ford had actually befriended Wayne when the young man was doing odd jobs as well as extra work-including in few of the director’s films-at Fox Studios in the late 1920s. Wayne made his official film debut starring in Raoul Walsh’s 1930 epic western “The Big Trail.”
