Although the Lion Guard is over and Elena of Avalor is coming to a close, Disney Junior has new shows that can live up to those two: TOTS, Bluey, Gigantosaurus, and now The Rocketeer.
I have never read the original comic book and know almost nothing about it, but the definitely-not-for-kids comic somehow translates well to a show that is for kids. The show is about Kit, who is a first female Rocketeer, and also the first kid Rocketeer. The episodes are about her protecting Hughesville from any dangers (like villains) and interacting with its residents.
Kit is a very believable protagonist, and a breath of fresh air. She's not a spoiled brat, or a Mary-Sue, she's simply a brave little kid who is eager to save the day but makes mistakes along the way and is still learning how to be a hero, which shows kids that you won't always get everything right on the first try and success involves trial and error, which is such an important message to teach to kids in this day and age.
The villains also have reasonable motivations for being evil. The Great Orsino became evil when he was exposed as a fraud at magic, and when he was compared to the Rocketeer. Now for the other characters. Grandpa Ambrose is a lovable old guy with some serious potential for backstory and character development. Plus, who can say no to Frank Welker? May Songbird might seem like a grumpy old lady at first, but she's so much more than that once you peel back the layers. I'm not too terribly fond of Tesh, as I didn't enjoy his jokes, but he and Kit have a nice back-and-forth dynamic and he also has potential. At least he has his own personality other than being the best friend.
Episodes like Songbird Soars Again really prove how amazing the show is. In that episode, Kit and Tesh find out that their grumpy old neighbor really used to be an ace pilot, and help get her career back to her. I can't wait to see where the show will go next.
