Having recently watched "My Name is Jonas" from France on Prime, and Then We Danced from Georgia on Netflix, I was very receptive to see how Columbia/USA would handle another LGBTQ story. We meet 2 young attractive gay men, Adrian and Sebastian, in love or in lust, depending on your views on love. We are very quickly exposed to their problems and conflicts. There isn't enough time given to grow the characters in this screenplay, so we cannot really relate to them. In fact, Adrian almost immediately comes across as a know it all, angry and unlikable character. It is surprising his boss puts up with him at all. Once you lose empathy for a lead, it is hard to care about what happens to him. We soon discover that Adrian, who is running from his homophobic Colombian family that wants him to marry a woman and carry on the family business, drags Sebastiano with him to New York. Sebastiano, who has come out and is rejected by his family, decides to accompany him. His visa to stay in New York expires and is unlikely to be renewed. Adrian works hard at trying to get Sebastian married to an American woman for hire to obtain the visa, alienating all the prospective candidates along the way. The long and the short of it is that this script is plodding, predictable and not engaging enough. The music although beautiful on its own, is a jarring and irrelevant background for the movie. This is a valiant attempt to showcase the issues of homophobic families and US immigration visas tearing apart relationships, but this has been done so much more creatively and so much better by others, before. I hope the next movie from these directors is much better.
