Madison Young is familiar from her mainstream performances in Lesbian Cinema, notably as a director and actress for Filly Films and occasional player at the leading labels Sweetheart Video and Girlfriends Films. This documentary-style feature for Abigail Prods. reflects her other career as journalist, but the pro-am touristy sex format is a bummer.
While not subscribing to the cinema of ugliness (think Max Hardcore or Lizzy Borden) Young proselytizes for the lesbian lifestyle with a stress on non-glamorous, plain Jane models or real folk. This is commercial suicide in the marketplace, as not only the male customers who predominate (like it or not) as the fanbase of Lesbian themed porn but the female consumers also love staring at beautiful women.
Her visit to the Big Apple and especially Brooklyn is peppered with insipid voice-over commentary by Madison that conflates being an out-in-the-open lesbian with other trendy things that seem extremely silly when name-dropped. So she's constantly on about being a sexual revolutionary, but also an anarchist and lover of Vegan food! I guess if mainstream TV were to sponsor a Madison Young show we'd have a Sapphic version of "The View" meets "The Chew" (pun definitely intended).
The young women here are all earnest in their devotion to lesbian sex as well as being frequent patrons of Gotham's tattoo parlors. When Young isn't plugging her favorite magazine Spread, she promotes local bastions of hip culture, like BlueStockings bookstore or Babeland sex toy shop.
I preferred the auteur's more professional approach (hiring semi-famous actresses) in her San Francisco edition of this series (reviewed separately by me).
