Fletch's radio station is a great success, his relationship with elderly cell-mate Joe less so, as is news of his appeal and in frustration he plays provocative songs on air. To solve one of the problems Joe is given a single cell but Fletch's relief is short-lived when he is forced to share with an even more annoying inmate and he hears bad news about Joe - realizing that the old man was not so bad after all.

Much to Meekie's disapproval the governor asks Fletch to become the minder for suicidal new inmate, rock star Rob Strange becoming his cell-mate, in exchange for the promise of giving him his own radio station. After Rob has confessed the reason for his depression Fletch gets his girlfriend Karen to trace his long-lost daughter, thus averting a nasty roof-top accident and giving Fletch what he wanted - again much to Meekie's disapproval.

Fletch reluctantly agrees to broker a truce between Dougie Parfitt and his rival Najid but it turns into a riot, in front of the board of visitors, making their annual inspection. One visitor is Caroline Hawley, mother of the girl Fletch dumped and no great fan of his but after he has saved her from the rioters she is quick to show her appreciation whilst the result of the riot also releases Fletch from his unwanted role as go-between.

In return for Fletch helping a mate Dougie Parfitt gifts him the hulking Scudds to be his minder, though this proves to be embarrassing as it gives Fletch privileges over other prisoners, arousing Meekie's suspicions. Fletch is therefore very relieved when Dougie asks for Scudds back, allowing Fletch to deal with the bullying Nagid in his own way.
