Ticket sales dropped 35 percent week-on-week.
The last week of March (March 25-31) suffered a heavy drop in ticket sales of 35% week-on-week making it the second-quietest week in 2019 so far, behind the traditionally slow pre-Chinese New Year week only.
Although February was the biggest single month in a single market, overall the first quarter of 2019 turned out to be a sluggish one at the China box office. Gross box office receipts fell by 8% to $2.8bn compared to the same period in 2018. The months of January and March were each down 20% year-on-year.

It’s been a good year for Beijing Culture, one of the lead production companies behind some the biggest films of the year in China.
The company began as a tourism-management entity overseeing popular historic sites of interest in Beijing, and only established its film division in 2016. Yet in the space of three years, it has been a driving force behind China’s two top-grossing films of all time – “Wolf Warrior 2,” which took in $847 million, and “The Wandering Earth,” which grossed $686 million and is still in theaters – as well as mega-hit “Dying to Survive” ($462 million at the B.O.) and “A Cool Fish,” the 10th highest-grossing locally produced film last year with a $119 million gross.
Last year, Beijing Culture made a net profit of $48.7 million, up 6% year-on-year, thanks to a rise in the profitability of its film business compared to previous years, according to Chinese media reports.

Murphy’s death on Monday was confirmed by the New Zealand Film Commission. The organization called him “one of the leading figures in New Zealand cinema’s renaissance of the late 1970s and 1980s.”
A writer, director and producer, Murphy directed three films in that period – “Goodbye Pork Pie,” “Utu,” and “The Quiet Earth” – that were timely and locally-rooted. They are now considered as Kiwi classics.
Murphy’s creative career kicked off as a founding member of musical, theatrical troupe Blerta. His first film, “Wild Man” was largely developed and improvised by Blerta regulars. Murphy’s road movie “Never Say Die,” gave Temuera Morrison his first starring role.

Felix Chong’s film surpassed ‘Hello, Mrs Money’ and ‘Shadow’.
The first week of October (Oct 1-7) is traditionally one of the most lucrative Chinese box office windows, but disappointment looms over this year’s National Day holiday.
It collected $277.62m (RMB1.91b) over seven days, down 27.5% from the same period in 2017 (although the holiday lasted eight days last year). This is the second time the National Day holiday recorded negative growth over the last 10 years.

On a pre-holiday weekend, in which new films unusually were released Sunday instead of the normal Friday, “Hello Mrs. Money” starring Celina Jade topped the Chinese box office. Zhang Yimou’s “Shadow” took the second spot.
Their first day of release gave “Mrs. Money” $16.8 million, and “Shadow” $10.4 million, according to data from Ent Group. They were followed by Hong Kong crime thriller “Project Gutenberg,” with $8.17 million.
China’s week-long National Day holiday begins Monday. For many people, Saturday was treated as an additional working day. Once the holiday period gets underway for more people, box office numbers are likely to swell.
“Money” was produced by Mahua FunAge, a company that is China’s market leader in live comedy and that made a successful transition into film with 2015’s “Goodbye Mr. Loser,” which made $218 million, 2016’s “Mr. Donkey” and last year’s sports comedy “Never Say Die.” “Never Say Die” was...

China kicked off the New Year with a massive $200m hit delivered by The Ex-File: The Return Of The Exes, but Star Wars: The Last Jedi opened soft.
Disney’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi was the first Hollywood blockbuster to arrive in 2018, but it was easily defeated by a large margin. Despite its worldwide success ($1.2bn worldwide so far), it took $30.9 from its three-day opening weekend, half of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and about 70% of Rogue One: A Star War Story which was released almost exactly one year ago.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi was the only new entry in the top 10 chart.

China’s box office hit $8.6bn (RMB55.9bn) in 2017, an increase of $2bn over the previous year, according to figures from the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (Sapprft).
However, it’s difficult to make year-on-year comparisons as the Chinese yuan has appreciated against the Us dollar and the Chinese authorities have changed the way they calculate box office revenues over the past year.
In Us dollar terms, the figure represents a 30% increase against the $6.6bn (RMB45.7bn) in box office revenues collected in 2016. But in Chinese currency terms, the year-on-year growth stands at around 22%. Sapprft reported an increase of just 13.45%, which appears to reflect the growth rate once the fees paid by consumers to online ticketing platforms have been removed.
