This whole situation reminds me of Ghost Wars. Both shows have characters handling situations differently from the same overdone route and in both cases people decided the show apparently sucks because of it.
There is no question that the pilot especially doesn't dwell on drama or the 'oohh spooky' vibes as much as is normal in these supernatural shows. Instead it tries to make their job the norm as it really is, you have the calm of action that usually comes when you do this sort of stuff as a job, the stuff a usual supernatural flick would usually leave for 2nd or 3rd season to accommodate the watchers even though the characters have been living the life.
As for the pacing in some areas its not as smooth as it should be, it kind of reminds me of a novel in the way it jumps but for visual media they should have smoothed it over more. Basically the scene pacing tries too much to keep up with how the characters are portrayed to be hitting the ground running in the situation and it falls flat sometimes. This, seems to be the shows biggest problem and its not even that major. All it needs is that sprinkle of the right atmosphere and a touch up on its pacing to go from good to truly great.
Outside of that the pilot seems to be a nice change of pace and while it isn't top charts its a very serviceable show and I'm looking forward to more.
Update for EP2: I don't think it was this bad for ep1 because I never jumped out at me like it does for this episode in that... THE CAMERA GUY NEEDS TO BACK UP SOMETIMES. They're really overusing the close up thing and its annoying.
