I ended up watching this twice.
First viewing was to enjoy some good old-fashioned storytelling, yet was immediately swept away with the stylish and authentic approach. Narratively, you won't be disappointed. Visually, it makes its mark. The sound isn't just the finishing touch, it wraps its arms around the entire film with simplicity and polish.
Second viewing was because I thought my teenage son would like it...he actually put his phone down!

GUNN's story is pure gangster; prohibition, shoot outs, turf wars, family, night clubs, dames. In that respect the story isn't anything new, but the story-telling is phenomenal. From minute one the gangster scene is set. Then minute two practically slaps you in the face and says, "Look, this is an independent film! It's going to be a little different than what you're expecting. Okay, now that we've got that established, check THIS out!" Minutes three and beyond mesmerize you and completely draw you into its world by being so well-written, well-acted, and well-lit. The lighting really does stand out. There are so many clever tricks that work for the style and the story. If you're interested in film-making, this indy puts on a clinic. And just when you're good and hypnotized, GUNN knocks you for a loop with the final scene. This is a surprising and wonderful film.
