Empire of the Sun's debut single - and still their biggest hit yet - is a timeless classic and one of the most unique electropop atmospheres conceived. Fusing psychedelia with electropop and an indie scale of ambition and passion. The song alone is already quite the dreamy trip.
The music video doesn't disappoint in that aspect, either.
This visualizer of Walking on a Dream introduces us to the world that Empire of the Sun would expand on in the coming years. With outlandish outfits and strange activity in foreign lands. Just the idea of an Australian duo messing around in Asia wearing bizarre outfits is a trip. Add the music and the art direction, now there's something special.
This music video looks great and dives into that "dreamlike" aspect. The coloration is vibrant, the art direction and before mentioned outfits add a surreal spectacle. But unlike abstract surrealism, Walking on a Dream is oddly grounded. There aren't fish with human legs per se, but there is a stylish duo roaming the foreign streets and looking odd while doing so. But it's beautiful.
It's been roughly 16 years and this music video still looks and feels even dreamier than it did back then. It truly does feel like Empire of the Sun were walking within a dream in this one.
