Exclusive: With a horror project for Universal/Monkeypaw and a Night of the Living Dead sequel still in the offing, Nikyatu Jusu has begun development on The Fly, a new film based on David Cronenberg’s body horror masterwork, which she wrote and will direct for 20th Century Studios and Chernin Entertainment.

While the film’s plot is under wraps, sources stressed that it’s set in the universe of Cronenberg’s film, rather than a straightforward remake. Nikyatu will direct from her own script, with Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping producing. The project coalesces in a moment when body horror is very much back in vogue, with the success of Coralie Fargeat’s Cannes prize-winner The Substance, which has grossed over $43M worldwide and drummed up Oscar buzz for star Demi Moore.

Two Sentence Horror Stories creator Vera Miao has set her next project, a horror film titled Rock Springs. She wrote the script and will direct this horror feature, which will star Kelly Marie Tran, Benedict Wong, and Jimmy O. Yang.

The film's plot revolves around a family consisting of a young girl, her mother, and her grandmother, who decide to move to Rock Springs, Wy after the passing of her father. But shortly after their arrival, they find their lives in danger when they discover the town's dark past and that something monstrous lurks in the woods behind their new house.

Kelly Marie Tran, Benedict Wong and Jimmy O. Yang have been set to star in Rock Springs, a new film written and to be directed by Two Sentence Horror Stories creator and Expats scribe Vera Miao.

The plot of the drama centers on a grieving young girl who, along with her mother and grandmother, moves to Rock Springs, Wy after the death of her father, only to discover there is something monstrous hidden in the town’s history and the woods behind their new house.

Aria Kim (Whisper) and Fiona Fu (Tigertail) also star in the pic, from Macro Film Studios, Juniper Productions, Mandalay Pictures, Counterculture and Gold House. Macro, Juniper and Gold House are co-financing.

Miao, whose Two Sentence Horror Stories ran for three seasons on the CW, originated the idea for Rock Springs and it was developed by Counterculture, which brought on Macro to produce and finance.

Around 40 Hollywood writers have joined a hotel union boycott of two Los Angeles hotels, the Cameo Beverly Hills by Hilton and the Beverly Hills Marriott.

The Good Place creator Mike Schur, Emily in Paris writer and co-executive producer Grant Sloss, The Simpsons writer and executive producer Ian Maxtone-Graham and Abbott Elementary supervising producer and writer Brittani Nichols are among the scribes that joined the campaign, spearheaded by the major Los Angeles-area hospitality union Unite Here Local 11. Exclusive: Kevin Alves (Yellowjackets) has landed a recurring role in Netflix’s eight-episode comedy series No Good Deed from creator Liz Feldman (Dead to Me), Deadline has learned.

The actor plays Nate, the strait-laced, hard-edged son of Mikey (Denis Leary), with whom he has a strained relationship. As previously announced, Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow lead the cast, which also includes Linda Cardellini, Luke Wilson, Abbi Jacobson, Poppy Liu, Leary and O-t Fagbenle.

No Good Deed is a half-hour, dark comedy that follows three very different families vying to buy the very same 1920s Spanish-style villa that they think will solve all their problems. But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare.

Feldman serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum for Gloria Sanchez Productions, Christie Smith, and Silver Tree, who will direct the pilot and additional episodes.

Writing a feature film is easy. All you need is one gimmicky logline, as cheap and single-serving-disposable as a coffee pod from the complimentary hotel room K-Cup spinner. Once you stumble upon one of these so-called “high concept” ideas, the script practically writes, sells and produces itself. It’s creative work for stupid babies, as all filmmakers will surely agree–totally unlike, in other words, the act of conceptualizing an entire episodic series, a demonstration of storytelling virtuosity so complex and adult it straddles the border between ancient Euclidean geometry and New Age witchcraft.

Okay, so maybe that’s a little extreme. But for aspiring series creators and showrunners, structuring a workable, potentially long-running television concept requires imagination and problem-solving on both the micro- and macro- levels–a mastery of tone, plot and characterization across variable interlocking units of temporal storytelling: scenes, dramatic acts, full episodes, multi-episode arcs and complete seasons.

Gear up for a new season of Amazon’s breakout action hit Reacher, which is based on the popular novels by Lee Child that served as the basis for Tom Cruise’s attempted franchise, Jack Reacher. Although Cruise’s film adaptation was able to capitalize with the sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Prime Video’s Reacher series aimed to stick closer to the novels and presents a new case for each season. The streaming service just released the first batch of photos from the six-episode season, along with details on the plot and the cast list.

Alan Ritchson can be seen this summer adding his muscles to Vin Diesel’s Fast X, but the hulking actor is also back for season 2 of his breakout role in Reacher for Prime Video. According to Deadline, Ritchson is joined this season by Serinda Swan (Coroner), Ferdinand Kingsley (Sandman) and Rory Cochrane (Winning Time).

In addition, this season will also feature Domenick Lombardozzi (Magnum P.I.), along with Luke Bilyk (DeGrassi: The Next Generation), Dean McKenzie (Shooter), Edsson Morales (Black Summer), Andres Collantes (Two Sentence Horror Stories), Shannon Kook-Chun (The 100), Ty Victor Olsson (Supernatural), Josh Blacker (See), and Al Sapienza (Coroner). C.J. Cooke’s The Lighthouse Witches, released by Penguin Random House in 2021, is next becoming a TV series from Studiocanal and The Picture Company, and Deadline reports today that Vera Miao (“Two Sentence Horror Stories”) has come on board as showrunner.

When two of her daughters go missing, she’s frantic. She learns that the cave beneath the lighthouse was once a prison for women accused of witchcraft. Exclusive: The series adaptation of C.J. Cooke’s supernatural family novel The Lighthouse Witches has moved a step closer to fruition after Two Sentence Horror Stories creator Vera Miao boarded the project.

Miao, who created The CW drama series, which ran for three seasons, will create and serve as showrunner on the series, which comes from The Picture Company and Studiocanal.

It is the latest television project for The Picture Company, which is behind feature films including Gunpowder Milkshake and Sam Taylor-Johnson’s A Million Little Pieces. The company is also working with Studiocanal and Entertainment 360 on a scripted series adaptation of art documentary The Lost Leonardo.

DC’s Stargirl is coming to an end. The series will conclude with its third season, which is currently airing on The CW.

New episodes will continue to air on Wednesdays through December 7.

The series, created by Geoff Johns, stars Brec Bassinger as high school student Courtney Whitmore, the character that started Johns’ career as a comic book writer when he created her in 1999, inspired by his sister who was killed in a 1996 plane crash.

A few days ago the news broke that Marvel's upcoming reboot of "Blade" was being put on hold while the studio looked for a new director following Bassim Tariq's exit. The revisit to the world of the film partially responsible for the superhero-dominated culture we're currently experiencing was set to begin principal photography in Atlanta next month, and was apparently already in pre-production on location when crew members were informed of the pause. The company is anticipating a restart for early 2023, but a replacement director has yet to be named. It's been said that the Mahershala Ali-starring film will also be "further developing" story elements of the film, with a trusted /Film source confirming that Ali will contribute to the film's new direction, perhaps even with additional rewrites at his request.

Warner Bros. Television Group has eliminated 125 jobs, IndieWire has learned. That tally includes 82 employees laid off across the scripted, unscripted, and animation divisions as well as 43 open positions that will go unfilled.

The 125 jobs represent a loss of 26 percent of the current and vacant positions at the company. The layoffs alone comprise 19 percent of the current Wbtv workforce.

Parent corporation Warner Bros. Discovery has been cutting costs in all sorts of ways, including previous rounds of layoffs and the scrubbing of completed films and television series. The most notable example of the content write offs came when David Zaslav chose to wholly delete “Batgirl” ahead of its release. Zaslav and his consigliere CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels have tasked themselves with finding 3 billion in cost savings.

As Warner Bros. Discovery continues its belt tightening (with more layoffs expected imminently at Warner Bros. TV Group), the company has shuttered Stage 13, a shingle focused on diverse short-form programming, and will also pull the plug on the Warner Bros. Television Workshop, which had aimed to train new creative talent in both writing and directing.

Stage 13 was founded in 2017 under the former Warner Bros. Digital Networks division as a studio for original digital short-form programming. Past shows include Netflix’s “Special” and “It’s Bruno,” and The CW’s “Two Sentence Horror Stories.”

Warner Bros. Television has already been supervising Stage 13 development and programming since 2020; existing Stage 13 projects in development will be absorbed within the studio. The shut down comes as the popularity of producing short-form programming itself appears to be on the wane; this year, the TV Academy merged several short-form categories as the pool of programming shrunk.

While they were not specifically diversity programs exclusively for participants from historically excluded backgrounds, the Warner Bros. Television Workshop was regarded as an important pipeline of opportunity for such artists looking to break into the business. The writers’ workshop had been in existence for more than 40 years, with more recent notable alumni including Akela Cooper (Luke Cage, Blumhouse’s upcoming M3GAN), Zak Schwartz (Wu-Tang: An American Saga, TNT’s Snowpiercer) and Latoya Morgan (The Walking Dead, Into the Badlands). A final networking and pitch event will then offer participants the opportunity to introduce themselves and their work to studio and network executives.

Exclusive: Roselyn Sanchez and Eric Winter’s Two for the Road Entertainment has signed a deal with Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. The pact is strictly for producing as the husband-and-wife duo both are series regulars on ongoing shows, ABC’s The Rookie and Fox’s Fantasy Island, respectively.

Under the deal, Two for the Road and Kapital have sold their first project, procedural drama Hsi: Puerto Rico, to CBS.

Additionally, the companies have optioned the book White Smoke by New York Times bestselling author Tiffany D Jackson for TV development. Published in 2021, the YA psychological thriller is described as The Haunting of Hill House meets Get Out.

The latest Sunday Night Football game, capping a weekend of playoff games, proved a strong one for both the NBC and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Live SNF games were already an obvious winner for Sunday primetime, but the wildcard edition that saw the Chiefs beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 42-21 last nigth brought in impressive numbers in Nielsen fast affiliates. The highest-rated and most-watched program of Sunday, SNF scored a 6.0 rating the 18-49 demo and 21.66 million viewers, up sharply from the previous week.

The live game on NBC outperformed other titles Sunday, but shone even brighter amid repeats on competing networks. Fox and ABC was all in repeats, the latter peaking with America’s Funniest Home Videos earlier in the evening. The episode featured a video tribute from current host Alfonso Ribeiro to former host Bob Saget, who died earlier this month at age 65.

Exclusive: Showrunner Tanya Saracho and UCP (a division of Universal Studio Group) have selected 5 inaugural fellows for the Ojalá Ignition Lab: Diana Peralta, Luca Rojas, Melba Silwany, Samantha Renee Cordero, and Stephanie Adams-Santos.

Over the course of 26-weeks—beginning Jan. 11—, each fellow will have the opportunity to tell the story they want to tell and develop an original, polished television pilot script from start to finish, which will be commissioned by UCP.

The fellows will gather virtually on a weekly basis to share and receive constructive feedback on each other’s material, as well as receive support and feedback from Ojalá and UCP executives. Updated, 9:35 Am: The CW has moved up the midseason return of Walker by two weeks. Season 2 of the reboot starring Jared Padalecki had been set for Thursday, January 27, and now will premiere at 8 p.m. Thursday, January 13.

Previously, November 5: The CW has set its midseason premiere dates, and there are a lot of changes coming in 2022.

The second season of Superman & Lois will serve as a lead-in to new series Naomi on Tuesday nights beginning January 11. They will take over the spots previously held by The Flash and Riverdale, which are moving to new nights after a months-long hiatus. Riverdale will move to Sundays beginning March 6, and The Flash and Kung Fu will comprise the Wednesday lineup beginning March 9.
