What is life without love? It’s a question that movies often explore, and sometimes, one comes along that truly moves us. I recently watched a Netflix film called Viva La Vida, and it left me in tears, just like those movies I used to watch back in school, like Five Feet Apart, Midnight Sun, and The Fault in Our Stars. Viva La Vida is about a young woman named Ling Min, who’s just about to turn twenty-five. But instead of planning a big celebration, Ling Min is facing something incredibly difficult—she has uremia, a condition that leads to kidney failure. Her life revolves around managing her health, tracking every bit of food and water, and making sure her potassium levels are just right. She knows that without a kidney transplant, she might not survive much longer. As she watches life slip by, seeing others suffer and lose hope,...

When Friends took over hearts and TV screens for 10 years of its run (and beyond!), it was just a natural course of time before any of us had a crush on one of the stars of the sitcom. But topping anyone and everyone’s list, Jennifer Aniston still wears the crown. Rachel Green was more than just a character— She was an icon, one who redefined fashion for years to come with her signature “Rachel” cut and immaculate sense of style.

So it comes as no surprise that even her co-stars had a crush on her. And while we’d think it was her 5 main castmates as the top contenders, there was one recurring star who couldn’t keep it together during their scenes. Surely, learning pranks from Rachel and repeating her lines was a tough ask for Ben Geller!

Even before Justin Baldoni finished reading Colleen Hoover’s book It Ends With Us, he knew it was an important story that needed to be adapted for the big screen.
Baldoni says he was instantly “moved by Lily’s bravery and what she had to overcome,” and that he wanted to team up with Hoover to develop the novel as a movie via his Wayfarer Studios shingle. And once he learned the wide-spread impact the story had among women, as well as the book becoming a TikTok sensation, it only confirmed Baldoni’s instincts.
“So often in our industry, we’re told we’re not curing cancer, we’re not saving lives, just making art, just making movies. To that I say, well, I wonder if we’re making the right movies then,” The director and star tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And that’s what we want to do differently at Wayfarer.

Spoiler Alert: For those who haven’t read the book, this piece spoils the plot of It Ends With Us.
Seven years after his Ted Talk about toxic masculinity, Jane the Virgin star and Five Feet Apart director Justin Baldoni combined directing and acting for the highly anticipated film adaptation of It Ends With Us, in which he stars as the abusive neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid.
Based on Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, the story centers on Lily Bloom (Blake Lively) who first encounters Ryle in a close-up rooftop moment before meeting him again later after she opens her Boston flower shop. Ryle foregoes his no strings attached relationship style to pursue Lily and eventually marry her, though she starts to experience violence at his hands before and after the wedding.

From here, on Lily faces a choice, and it’s not between the two men, but rather whether to stay with or leave Ryle.

The highly anticipated film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s “It Ends With Us” hits theaters with a star-studded cast.
After initial announcements of Blake Lively playing the 23-year-old Lily Bloom, fans of the book weren’t convinced that Justin Baldoni’s adaptation would live up to the hype. Baldoni, who plays Lily’s love interest, Ryle, also directed and produced the film with his production company Wayfarer.
Both Hoover and Baldoni publicly stated that it was a joint decision to age up the characters, and one they hoped would make the story of domestic violence more universally accessible to a greater range of women.
“When we chose to partner with Sony and turn this into a major motion picture, obviously you need a movie star, [Lively] was one of the first names that was brought up, and all of us got very excited by the idea,” Baldoni told TheWrap about his casting choice for his protagonist.

Catapulted to the number one spot on nearly every literary chart worldwide, novelist Colleen Hoover has significantly benefited from social media’s renewed interest in popular literature. Already a highly successful self-published author, Hoover’s popularity skyrocketed during the pandemic when bored content creators began sharing book reviews on short-form video platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. This viral trend resulted in millions of copies of her novels being sold.
Now one of Hoover’s most popular novels, the semi-autobiographical It Ends With Us has been adapted into a film by Five Feet Apart director, Justin Baldoni. The actor-turned-director also stars alongside Blake Lively, Brandon Sklenar, comedian Hasan Minhaj, Scottish actor Kevin McKidd, and comedienne Jenny Slate.

Justin Baldoni knows how to direct romance. His years of playing Rafael Solano on "Jane the Virgin" have equipped him with skills that give him an eye for intimacy, a full-bodied embrace of well-worn tropes guaranteed to make a Mother-Daughter movie night overflow with tears, and choosing actors who can make even the most nonsensical dialogue feel lived in. His previous films, "Five Feet Apart" and "Clouds," fall under the same teenage illness romance umbrella, but "It Ends With Us" is only arguably an adult story, as author Colleen Hoover seemingly wrote the book in the format of "YA romance, but this time they're adults!" Baldoni's biggest canvas yet gives the massive challenge of adapting one of the most popular books of the decade for a major studio, all while co-starring as the male lead and juggling the trickiest subject matter of his career.

The first feature adaptation of a novel by author Colleen Hoover, It Ends With Us, is hitting the screen this weekend in what is expected to be a major crowd pleaser for her legion of female fans. The movie, aptly in the hands of Jane the Virgin actor-turned-Five Feet Apart filmmaker Justin Baldoni, who also stars here, captures the emotional complexities of relationships mired in domestic abuse and why women decide to stay — or not.
Similar to how Baldoni was able to capture the fragile romanticism between a young couple stricken with chronic diseases in 2019’s $93 million-grossing Five Feet Apart, the director, together with screenwriter Christy Hall, is able to lift the particulars of passions that are damaged and toxic off the pages and onto a bigger canvas, while stepping into the headspace of many women who’ve experienced plights such as Lily Bloom’s, portrayed by Blake Lively...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars in Daina O Pusić’s complex, delightfully odd tale of grief. Here’s our Tuesday review.
Films about death tend to be about coming to terms with the fate that waits for us all. Films like The Fault In Our Stars, Five Feet Apart, Meet Joe Black and Me And Earl And The Dying Girl all find characters accepting death, either their own or a loved one’s, as part of life and are able to move on.
Daina O Pusić’s directorial debut Tuesday is different. The only word I can think to describe it is “weird”. Thoroughly, unapologetically weird. While the film’s trailer seemingly promises a traditional, life-affirming weepy, Pusić isn’t interested in offering a gentle look at death.
Instead, death takes the form of a bird, a macaw to be exact. It flies from person to person, granting them death whether they...

Justin Baldoni is on the mend.
Not that you can tell he’s been sick. In Variety’s L.A. photo studio, he leaps into the air and clicks his heels for the camera as an Ajr song booms in the background. It’s only when greeting him that one notices: Before leaning in for a bear hug, he adjusts the tubes protruding from IV ports on his arm. He’s recovering from a weeklong hospital stay at St. John’s, still fighting off a nasty infection that he doesn’t want to talk about.
Vulnerability doesn’t always come easily. Indeed, that’s what Baldoni’s new film is all about. A decade ago, director James Ward Byrkit brought us a surreal, Twilight Zone-ish sci-fi thriller called Coherence (watch it Here), which JoBlo’s own Eric Walkuski gave an 8/10 review you can read at This Link. Now Deadline has revealed that Byrkit and It’s What’s Inside producer Kate Andrews are teaming up to develop a follow-up of some sort to Coherence! Cathy Schulman says getting into the movie business was a “bit of an accident.” It was a time before studying cinema was recognized as a fine art, so she was a playwrighting major at Yale. Then someone told her she would average about $1,500 for her plays. Concerned if she could support herself, she was advised to look into the movie business. “I said, ‘What’s that?’” Schulman, now the CEO and president of Welle Entertainment, recalls. “And the next thing you knew, I was in an interview, and I was hired to work on a set, and the rest is history.”
The movie was “Blue Steel,” and the-then 22-year-old Schulman was excited to see the film was being directed by a woman, Kathryn Bigelow. (She didn’t know it would be another 20 years before she worked with a female director.) From those humble beginnings, Schulman would go on to enormous...

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

At a time when theatrical is looking to distinguish itself with more prolific fare than the factory conveyor belt of humdrum product coming from streaming, it’s with great upset to hear that Lionsgate’s feature adaptation of Judy Blume’s pinnacle 1970 novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret fell greatly short at the box office with a $6.8M opening; below both the $7M-$9M that the studio was seeing, and the more bullish $10M+ that rivals spotted.
Figuring out what went wrong here with Judy Blume’s first big screen Hollywood foray, which won over critics (99% certified fresh) and the few who bought tickets (A CinemaScore), has less to do with the commercial potential of the pic’s genre –movies based on female-skewing bestselling novels– and more to do with...

A lot has been said about the romantic relationship between Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart. Though the couple split back in 2020, there was still a lot of chatter regarding the Riverdale stars. Prior to Sprouse officially announcing their split via Instagram in August of 2020, many people were questioning if the duo had split on more than one occasion. And since Sprouse was seen spending time with other women, there was plenty of speculation about infidelity around the couple. Now, three years later, Sprouse is addressing the cheating rumors once and for all.

Cole Sprouse is laying it all out on the table.
While sitting down with Alex Cooper on the latest episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, the former Disney Channel star recounted the “cringey” story of how he lost his virginity as a young teenager.
“This is such a great story. I feel like it says so much about me,” Sprouse, now 30, told Cooper before providing a few minor details to paint the picture: “I was 14 when I lost my virginity, so this is still bowl-cut guy.”
“I was on a family trip in Florida, and I met this girl who was older, so that’s already dubious. The first night we kind of made out, the second night — this makes me nervous, it’s so cringey — I, like, knocked on her hotel door,” he continued, noting that his heart was “beating” as the two then made their way to a beach.

It was announced in 2019 that American author Colleen Hoover's "It Ends With Us" would be getting a movie adaptation after the novel was optioned by Justin Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios, with the author serving as a consultant on the film. Today, Variety reported that Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni ("Jane the Virgin") would be starring in the movie. The best-selling book was 2022's top-selling print, has been published and translated into over 40 languages, and has been on the New York Times Best Seller List for 90 weeks and counting.
The casting news has arrived shortly after much online debate pointing out the controversial themes of "It Ends With Us," the novel's problematic portrayal of abusive relationships, and a recent endeavor to publish a coloring book inspired by the title has been met with backlash from critics of Hoover. Certain readers also worry about the book's one-dimensional male protagonist, his shallow employment of toxic masculinity,...

The day has finally arrived: Netflix has ads.
On Thursday, the streaming giant officially released its “Basic with Ads” tier in the United States. The cheap(er) subscription plan includes four to five minutes of ads per hour, with each ad being about 15-30 seconds long. These spots play both before titles and in the middle of films and TV episodes. There’s certain exceptions; when new Netflix original films coming to the streamer, like “Knives Out 2,” all ads play before the movie starts. However, not all movies have the ad-tier option.
Four of the movies on the streamer’s current Top 10 are unavailable on the plan. Those titles still appear in searches on the ad tier, but they’re marked with a red lock icon in the right-hand of its thumbnail. Clicking on an unavailable film opens up a window prompting the user to change their subscription in order to access the content.

Smith, the film follows complete strangers Hadley and Oliver, who find themselves falling for each other on a flight from New York to London, only to get separated when they land. Despite the low probability of reconnecting in a city as big as London, the bond forged on the flight spurs them toward reunion, motivated by the hope that their missed connection is a shot at love. The search will not only reward Hadley and Oliver, but will prove whether it was fate or misfortune that got between them.
The romantic comedy cast includes Haley Lu Richardson, Ben Hardy (“6 Underground”), Jameela Jamil, Rob Delaney (“Catastrophe”), Dexter Fletcher and Sally Phillips...

Warner Bros. has debuted a new trailer for the romantic comedy ‘Moonshot.’
Like many 20-somethings her age, Sophie (Lana Condor) is faced with a world of choices. Sure, there’s the future stuff, the family stuff, the job stuff. But, where she is truly confused is on the big choice, the momentous one, the top-of-list one that stands out—what to do about him!
Her long-term b.f. Calvin (Mason Gooding) has moved with his family and taken a job out of town. As in way out of town. A published scientist, Calvin’s posting was supposed to be temporary and now, that “temporary” is beginning to read more like “permanent.” Then there’s Walt (Cole Sprouse), who’s also confronted with choices, but maybe not so many. He’s pretty content with his going nowhere assistant barista job in a college bookshop and his solitary existence. That is, until...

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Brian Tyler and Breton Vivian’s score for Redeeming Love, which is set for release tomorrow via Milan Records, as the Universal Pictures title hits theaters.
The film directed by DJ Caruso is a Western romance based on the bestselling novel by Francine Rivers that watches as a young couple’s relationship clashes with the harsh realities of the California Gold Rush of 1850.
For the project marking Tyler’s sixth collaboration with Caruso, he and Vivian looked to craft a sweeping score that captured the heart of its story and themes.
“Composing the score for Redeeming Love was truly one of the most moving experiences of my life. Incredibly directed by long-time collaborator DJ Caruso, the characters imbue such a sense of grace and love that I wanted to…write music that evoked their raw emotion in all of its complexity,” said Tyler.
