Even though the story is set in India, the filming was actually carried out in southern Sri Lanka.
The programme's creator Dan Sefton was one of thousands of former National Health Service staff who returned to work in NHS hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sefton had worked as an Accident and Emergency Department doctor at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Somerset but was forced to quit the profession as his success as a scriptwriter meant he wasn't doing enough hours of medical work to retain his licence to practise medicine.
The first series achieved consolidated audiences of around 6.7 million viewers and a 26% audience share, prompting ITV to commission a second series that will commence filming in August 2017 for broadcast early in 2018.
On Monday, 23rd April 2018 ITV announced that it had commissioned a third series of the show to be broadcast in 2019. Filming on series 3 is scheduled to commence in August 2018.
The medical drama is set to return for a fourth series but has been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Filming on series four is now scheduled to begin in June 2021 - if it is safe enough to film in Sri Lanka. The show's creator Dan Sefton had started working on writing a fourth series but then returned to working as a doctor in Britain's National Health Service during the pandemic.
