Prior to airing, the film was accused by fans of Yuri!!! On Ice (2016) of ripping off the anime series and simultaneously "straight-washing" the series. Yuri!! On Ice writer Mitsurô Kubo stated on her Twitter that the similarities between the series and the movie were coincidental.
Gail O'Grady and Andrew W. Walker previously worked together playing husband & wife on the short-lived sitcom Hot Properties (2005) which ran for 13 episodes.
Aired as the first of three original films in The Hallmark Channel's 2017 "Winterfest" lineup.
