The Man

The theme of the story is illustrating what friendship is and why people develop a dependency on alcohol.

The title of the movie is Mard. It means Male. The film title comes with the connotation of patriarchy value.

Mr. Naser Malek Motiei releases from prison and comes back to his hometown to meet his friends. He becomes aware that Bahman Mofid develops a dependency on alcohol to respond to his emotional feelings. He uses alcohol to self-medicate himself.

Mr. Naser Malek Motiei takes Mr. Mofid to a shrine and askes Mofid to stay in the presence of a holy saint and asks to cure his illness.

The following morning Mr. Naser Malek Motiei comes to the shrine and finds Mr. Mofid is praying. They leave the shrine and come home to restart their life together.

The malevolent character is Mr. Hosein Gil, who takes several steps to deceive Mr. Mofid with alcohol. He fails. One night, he goes to Mr. Mofid's house, and there is no male person at home except Mr. Mofid's sister. He goes into the house and wants to impose his will against her. She does not want him to touch her and fell off the ledge of the window and dies.

The small community begins to spread rumours that she is not a good wife to Mr. Naser Malek Motiei.

Mr. Mofid goes back to his default to suppress his feelings with alcohol. Mr. Motiei moves to Tehran.

Mr. Gil tells Mr. Mofid that he has to give all his possessions to him. Mr. Mofid goes into a hideout. He works on himself to become clean again.

Mofid wants to confront Mr. Gil. The brother-in-law of Motiei comes to Tehran and asks him to come back to the town to save his brother Mofid from the fistfight. Motiei investigates the cause of the death of his wife from his brother-in-law. He tells him that night he goes to his girlfriend house of Mofid Mofid's girlfriend's house because he starts to consume alcohol. He says that he sees Gil going into the house.

Motiei puts all dots together becomes aware that she does not commit suicide. She fells off the window ledge.

Motiei is returning to his hometown and sees Mr. Mofid and Gil are about to have a titan clash. He steps in and kills Gil, and the law enforcement is arriving at the crime scene.

The movie plot was very well written and illustrates how people who have an alcohol addiction are not their fault. They need constant care not to go back to their self-medication.

The issue of suicide considers as a taboo issue.

The notion of being a man implies being a good person.
