Folktale Anthology

This is an anthology film that has includes three different folktales about the Pomors people of far North Russia, set in the shores of the White Sea. All the tales are by folklorist, Stepan Pisakhov.

'Eternal Icebergs' is about the villagers of the Arkhangelsk Governorate who sell "eternal icebergs", which they use in place of boats, pulled by Polar Bears.

'About the Bear' is a tale about a brown bear who finds some baking powder, makes himself white, and attempts to sneak into a village, which traditionally only allows Polar Bears to enter.

'Frozen Songs' is about how a German merchant buys frozen songs from people (it's so cold words freeze after they an spoken) and shows them to a packed concert hall in Germany.

All three films are beautifully animated and while they are not connected narratively, the combine well to provide a nice insight into the world of the Pomors people. A very enjoyable experience.
