But given Gupta had already shown his skill as an actor, there was no reason...

Box Office – Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kriti Sanon’s Crew is amongst Top-10 female centric films after Week One ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Crew continues to be in the record books after spending one week in theatres. It had a really good opening when it started in double digits, and then that stayed on to be the case for rest of the weekend as well when more than 10 crores kept coming in. Though Monday hold was quite good, there were steady numbers that kept coming between Tuesday to Thursday. That said, the drops were there and while they were not drastic, they were negligible. As a result, the Crew has to now contend with being in the Top-10 instead of being in the top 5.

Box Office – Crew holds well on Monday ( Photo Credit – Tips Official / YouTube )
Crew did well on Monday as 4.52 crores came in. On Friday, which was a partial holiday, the film had collected 10.21 crores which means the hold is definitely there. From this point on, the film should stabilise further and the drops would be even minimal since it has already happened on Monday. Moreover, with good word of mouth coming its way, the film will further stabilise.
The common sentiment amongst those who have watched Crew is that it’s after ages that a light-hearted film like this has come, which also caters to the entire country and not just a state or two. Otherwise, there have been numerous North, Maharashtra or Up-centric films that have come, which are good but then restricted in appeal. Here, Crew as well actually caters primarily to the multiplex audiences but at least the...

Tabu, Kareena Kapoor and Kriti Sanon have done it. Their film has gone beyond just the opening day bonanza and has now done consistently well right through the weekend as well. It has been a bountiful score for the film, allowing it to find a place amongst the Top-5 weekend openers of all time. Interestingly, three out of these have come post-pandemic – Gangubai Kathiawadi, The Kerala Story, and Crew, each of which belongs to a different genre. That said, while the first two in the list are hard-hitting dramas, its Crew, which is light-hearted.

Over the years, the definition of a man has changed its course, and with time the represention of the modern man has also changed in Indian Cinema. Gone are the times when men were just macho heroes rescuing women. This is the era of vulnerable, compassionate and sensitive men. Men who can cry, who are not shy about seeking help when they need it and acknowledging the worth of the women in their lives. Men who can express their feelings and not hide them.
Many Bollywood male characters written by women have played a big role in breaking the mould of a stereotypical hero.
This change has been a product of increasing number of female writers. Women writers have actually played a big role in breaking the stereotypes around masculinity, by creating male characters who are sensitive, understanding and would cheer for women.

OpinionKannada cinema has produced an array of movies depicting conditions ranging from psychosis to personality disorders, yet the representation has only added to the stigma. Sanjana DeshpandeScreengrabEver since the making of the first Kannada film Sati Sulochana in 1934, Sandalwood has come a long way with recent hits like Kgf receiving global recognition. While attempts have been made to explore themes like mental health, the films usually leave the audiences disappointed with their caricature-like portrayal of the same. Even though landmark films have involved psychiatrists in producing and directing the movies, and contributing towards the plot, the films do not bear the desired outcome. Cinema has power over those who consume it and can influence people’s attitudes pertaining to subjects like mental health. Director Gauri Shinde loves to deal with human psychology and she does it in style in “Dear Zindagi”. It deals with the deep psychological waves that control the human emotions and make us stand in front of a mirror to judge our own reflections. The movie flows with the theory of Freud that says, “being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise”.

The film industry must exercise caution and be more sensitive in its messaging, irate psychiatrists have said in reference to the title and posters of the upcoming Hindi film Mental Hai Kya?, featuring popular actors Rajkummar Rao and Kangana Ranaut. Experts across the country aren't the least amused with the title and a newly-released poster which depicts the artistes trying to balance a razor sharp blade between their tongues.
Taking their ire a step further, the Indian Psychiatric Society (Ips) on Thursday wrote to the Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc), raising "serious objections" to the film's title.
"We take serious objections to the title of the movie, which is discriminative, stigmatising, degrading and inhuman in projecting mental disorders and persons who suffer mental disorders. We strongly demand the title to be removed with immediate effect preventing further damage to the modesty of mental health service users," read the letter.

The Indian film industry has historically been a male-dominated one, but the winds of change are blowing across the country, albeit slowly.
Better-served than the rest of the country is the Mumbai-based Hindi-language industry, where there are several active female filmmakers including Zoya Akhtar (“Gully Boy”), Reema Kagti (“Gold”), Leena Yadav (“Rajma Chawal”), Gauri Shinde (“Dear Zindagi”), Meghna Gulzar (“Raazi”), Shonali Bose (“Margarita With a Straw”), Farah Khan (“Om Shanti Om”) and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari (“Bareilly ki Barfi”), to name just a few.
“The new generation of young women directors is now making ad films, web series, corporate films, short fiction, documentaries and feature films, so it’s getting to be quite a level playing field,” says Priya Krishnaswamy, who works in Mumbai. Her Tamil Nadu set Tamil-language film “Baaram” is making the rounds at festivals.

“Delhi Crime Story,” a seven-part series by Indo-Canadian writer-director Richie Mehta (“Siddharth”) will have its world premiere at Sundance in early 2019.
Mehta was at the 2nd International Film Festival and Awards, Macao (Iffam), in 2017 with “The Price of Tea,” one of the three auteur projects at the Iffam project market that year. Set in Beijing, the film will follow a Canadian man who falls for a Chinese woman over the course of a magical day only to discover that she is not what she seems.
Several parts of “Delhi Crime Story” will play as part of Sundance’s Indie Episodic strand. Based on the 2012 rape case in Delhi that shocked the world, the series centers on the heroic actions of the Delhi police. With the eyes of the world upon it, the investigation is led by one passionate female officer who was driven to find the perpetrators by the crime’s extreme brutality.

Singapore’s history as a filming location might not ever rival Tokyo or Hong Kong, but things are starting to look up: “Crazy Rich Asians,” the upcoming Hollywood adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s locally set novel, has already been touted as the biggest film to ever spotlight the metropolis.
The Warner Bros. release starring Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh joins other noteworthy international movies that have filmed in Singapore since its founding as a republic in 1965.
Possibly the biggest pre-millennium title was “Saint Jack” (1979), Peter Bogdanovich’s down-and-dirty adaptation of Paul Theroux’s novel, which was partly based on the author’s own experiences in Singapore. It was filmed illicitly and without the government’s knowledge, long before the city cleaned up its prostitution scene, with salacious bits shot around Bugis Street.
Singapore subsequently banned the film until 2006, and few Hollywood movies attempted to risk the country’s wrath in the following decades.

Starring Sonakshi Sinha, Purab Kohli, Kannan Gill, M K Raina, Smita Tambe
Directed by Suhnil Sippy
