You don't have to imagine the future of Imaginary Mary any longer. ABC has cancelled the freshman TV series so there won't be a second season. The sitcom centers on fiercely independent single career woman named Alice (Jenna Elfman), who falls head over heels for Ben (Stephen Schneider), a divorced father of three. Meeting Ben’s kids is so stressful that the very idea triggers the reappearance of her imaginary childhood friend, Mary (voiced by Rachel Dratch). When ABC cancelled The Catch Thursday, it effectively changed Ben and Alice’s fate from fun-and-kicky! to tragically unresolved.
The Season 2 finale — which now will serve as a series finale — ends with Ben hopping a private jet out of the country to avoid getting hauled in by the FBI (led by a very ticked-off Justine). And when Alice decides to stay behind, the pair promises to see each other as soon as possible, then she watches wistfully as Ben takes off for less-illegal pastures.

The dust appears to have settled — for now.
A total of 12 broadcast series were dispatched to TV’s graveyard on Thursday as the major networks began cleaning house in advance of next week’s fall presentations (aka the Upfronts). Fox, meanwhile, pulled the plug on rookie series Making History, Son of Zorn and Apb. Even NBC got into the act (R.I.P. Powerless.)

Mickey Mouse probably isn’t whistling joyfully behind a boat steering wheel right about now: Disney’s ABC just canceled “American Crime,” “Dr. Ken,” “Secrets & Lies” and “Imaginary Mary.” “American Crime” (pictured above) made it three seasons, which were good enough to produce a pair of Emmy Awards for Regina King. Unfortunately, the Nielsen numbers didn’t see as much success. “Dr. Ken” and “Secrets & Lies” both lasted just two years; “Mary” barely made it one. For shows on the bubble, survival comes down to one thing: Money.
If you’re generating solid revenue for the network, then other concerns can be addressed down the road. But if your ratings are low (honestly, that’s almost every show these days), your creative is weak and executive support is wavering… then you better at least be owned by the network and bringing in nice international or streaming dollars.

Terence Davies is at once both monolithic and anonymous. A critically revered British filmmaker whose work has yet to catch on with general audiences (perhaps, in part, because his films are so crushingly intimate that it almost feels inappropriate to watch them in public), he’s seldom recognized on the street, and sometimes that might be for the best.
“The other day I was feeling low,” he said, “and I just thought: ‘Why am I making films that, like, three people or a dog go and see?’ I know this is feeble, but it really is killing when someone says ‘What do you do?’ ‘Oh, I make films.’ ‘Well, would I have seen some of them? Would I have heard of you?’ And I say: ‘Well, probably not.’”
Of course, some of our greatest artists are tremendously under-appreciated in their own time, though they may be the only ones who...

“Dharma and Greg” put her on the map in the late 1990s, but after that hit, the actress suffered through a series of disappointments, including “Courting Alex,” “Accidentally on Purpose,” “1600 Penn,” and “Growing Up Fisher.”
“I had written off network TV,” Elfman said. “I told my agents not to come to me with another network show. I work really hard and I do my best to promote the shows. I feel like mostly I do a good job. In any other field that would give you job security. Sometimes it’s like it doesn’t matter.”

NCIS: New Orleans, though, became the sole success of the CBS lineup by ticking up a tenth to a 1.1.
Do you think CBS is rethinking their schedule going into fall of 2017?
At ABC, The Middle was down one-tenth to 1.2 and American Housewife up one-tenth to 1.2. Fresh Off the Boat was down was down one-tenth to 1.0 and Imaginary Mary gained one-tenth to 0.9.
I did not know Imaginary Mary had started. Why? Hearst Broadcasting cut off my ABC on Dish Network at the beginning of March.
