He's also writing on the second season of Severance, the bracing sci-fi drama on Apple TV+ that's returning after nearly three long years off the air. He told us about that experience, but first, we talked about his short film Other Other.

Other Other is about an unlikely romance between Spyro and Myka. The two of them are dating online, their romance confined mostly to screens. Another issue: they're from different dimensions. Other Other is a story about online dating in the multiverse.

Jeff Daniels is always a reliably excellent performer whether its in comedy or drama, TV or film, and the veteran actor has turned in another masterclass performance in Netflix’s “A Man in Full.”

Adapted from Tom Wolfe‘s novel of the same name and created by “Big Little Lies” helmer David E. Kelley, “A Man in Full” follows Daniels as real estate mogul Charlie Croker, who tries to protect his empire and legacy from crumbling when he falls into sudden bankruptcy. Daniels dominated the screen here, chewing scenery, spitting it out with venom, and then re-chewing the scenery some more. He could finally break that losing streak with Netflix’s “All the Light We Cannot See.” Adapted from Anthony Doerr‘s 2014 novel of the same name, written by Steven Knight, and directed by Shawn Levy, this miniseries depicts the lives of two teenagers during WWII — one a blind French girl and the other a German boy forced to fight for the Nazi regime. Laurie features as Uncle Étienne, a reclusive, agoraphobic WWI veteran suffering from Ptsd. Laurie has always been a classy performer and he again brings a lot of heart, warmth, and intelligence here to this role, as noted by several critics.

Despite negotiations for a fifth season of Walker, the limited budget became an insurmountable obstacle to filming the next season, even though the series is one of the most popular projects on the network.

The CW has officially canceled Walker, the release of the fourth season of which is now in full swing and the final episode of the project will be released on June 26.

Exclusive: After landing the villain role in Ryan Coogler’s next project, Jack O’Connell continues to fill out his dance card. Sources tell Deadline that he is set to join the cast of 28 Years Later, a sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later. Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes also star in the pic, which is part of a planned trilogy.

Danny Boyle is directing the first movie from a script by Alex Garland. Sony will release the film in theaters globally.

While plot details are vague, the original 28 Days Later, directed by Boyle, written by Garland and released in 2002, centered on a bicycle courier (played by Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to discover the world had been overrun with zombies following the outbreak of a virus. The pic grossed more than $82 million worldwide and led to the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, on which Boyle and Garland served solely as EPs.

Apple TV+ is sure to perform well at this year’s Emmys with a number of shows strongly positioned including “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Sugar,” “Manhunt,” “The New Look,” and “Masters of the Air.” Well, add in another limited series to that mix — the historical drama “Franklin,” starring Oscar-winner Michael Douglas as the titular Benjamin Franklin.

The show chronicles Franklin’s eight years in France, wherein he attempted to convince King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to support the colonies in the American Revolutionary War. The series, as you’d expect, features fabulous costumes, sets, and hair and makeup. It is anchored by a powerhouse performance from Douglas, whose take on Franklin is a more modern one. The show is all the more entertaining for it, as noted by critics.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct – have been developing a new project in secret. Coogler has written the script for this project, which is being described as both a genre picture and a period piece that Coogler will be directing and Jordan is attached to star in. The project is set up at Warner Bros., is expected to have a budget of around $90 million, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 7, 2025. We still don’t know exactly what this movie is going to be about… but Deadline reports that Jack O’Connell is in talks to play the villain in it.

Exclusive: Jack O’Connell (Ferrari) is in talks to star opposite Michael B. Jordan in Ryan Coogler’s untitled event film for Warner Bros, sources tell Deadline.

While both the plot of the film and O’Connell’s role remain under wraps, we’re told it’s a period genre pic in which he’ll be playing the villain. Deadline was first to tell you about Warners’ acquisition of the project, following a heated bidding war.

The film brings Jordan and Coogler together following their collaboration on the Creed and Black Panther franchises, having first worked together on the acclaimed Sundance pic Fruitvale Station. It’s also the second project from the collaborators that Warner Bros Film Group co-chairs and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have championed, after greenlighting the box office hit Creed III during their time at MGM.

Coogler is writing and will also produce alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian.

Exclusive: Paradigm has signed Kim Coates, the actor and producer best known for a major role on FX’s Emmy-nominated crime drama Sons of Anarchy, for representation.

In Kurt Sutter’s series focused on the lives of outlaw motorcycle club members, which ran for seven seasons between 2008 and 2014, Coates plays one of the lead characters, Tig Trager, who serves as the sergeant-at-arms and is often involved in the club’s most challenging and controversial activities.

Most recently recurring on Max’s White House Plumbers, Coates has also been seen on series including Netflix’s Godless and Bad Blood, CBS’s CSI: Miami, and Fox’s Prison Break, to name a few.

An upcoming Netflix/BBC limited series about real-life tragedy has added some well-known stars to its cast.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Patrick J. Adams, Merritt Wever, and Connor Swindells are the latest actors to join the cast of Lockerbie.

The six-part series will center around the December 1988 terrorist attack on Pan Am Flight 103 from Frankfurt to Detroit.

The flight was bombed 38 minutes after take-off, exploding over Lockerbie, Scotland, and killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members.

“It was the worst-ever terror attack on British soil and the first major one on U.S. citizens,” Netflix and the BBC explained in a press release.

The outlets went on to reveal that the series will center around the attack and the ensuing investigation, a collaborative effort between American and Scottish intelligence agencies.

“The six-part series is based on the real events surrounding the 1988 Lockerbie bombing and the joint Scottish-u.

We’ve already documented what writer/director Scott Frank, the creator of the acclaimed series “Godless” and “The Queen’s Gambit” is not doing—at least not currently; Netflix passed on three of his projects, including a film with ‘Queen’s Gambit’ star Anya Taylor Joy—not let’s discuss what he is doing.

Casting director Ellen Lewis and head of Indigenous casting Rene Haynes came to Killers of the Flower Moon from very different backgrounds. The former had worked with Martin Scorsese for many years, beginning with Goodfellas. The latter had been at the forefront of casting Indigenous actors in everything from the Twilight series to the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which earned her an Emmy nom. When Killers came around, says Lewis, “I contacted Rene immediately because I had met her on [the Netflix series] Godless and knew that I was going to want her with me on this journey.”

Haynes was first hired to cast extras for War Party (1988). Production brought her to the Seven Reservations of Montana, where she says she “developed this strong attachment to [the Indigenous] community.” Soon thereafter was Dances With Wolves (1990), which she says “heralded a realization that Native characters should be played by Native actors.

Faraway Downs is a history drama miniseries created by Baz Luhrmann. The Hulu miniseries revolves around an English aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley, who travels halfway across the world to confront her wayward husband and also to sell a million-acre cattle ranch in the Australian Outback called ‘Faraway Downs.’ But when her husband dies a ruthless Australian cattle baron, King Carney tries to take the ranch illegally, to protect her property she joins hands with a cattle drover. Faraway Downs stars Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Brandon Walters, and Bryan Brown in the lead roles. So, if you loved the Hulu series here are some similar shows you could watch next.

The State of the Race

Don’t let last year’s Emmys, where “The White Lotus” star had it in the bag as much as any nominee possibly could, cloud one’s judgment of the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie race. This is often one of the most unpredictable acting categories year-to-year.

Dark Winds is a crime thriller series created by Graham Roland. The AMC series is based on a Leaphorn & Chee novel series written by Tony Hillerman. Dark Winds is set in the 1970s Southwest and it follows the story of two Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) as they go up against their dark past and evil forces to maintain peace in their community. Dark Winds recently aired its second season and while you wait for Season 3 to come out here are some similar shows you could check out.

The Chestnut Man (Netflix) Credit – Netflix

Synopsis: The Chestnut Man is set in a quiet suburb of Copenhagen, where the police make a terrible discovery one blustery October morning. A young woman is found brutally murdered in a playground and one of her hands is missing. Next to her lies a small man made of chestnuts.

In a new live-event series, Apple TV+ and Deadline are kicking off Visual Effects + Screen this Sunday, Aug. 6, at 2Pm at the Pickford Center for Motion Pictures Study in Los Angeles. The event will delve into the VFX process on Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, Silo, Foundation and Five Days at Memorial.

Attendees will be able to see for themselves how the elaborate effects were created and hear insights and stories from such panelists as VFX Compositing Supervisor Bill Parker, who received his third career Emmy nomination this year on Ted Lasso for the episode “Mom City” in the Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode. Parker received two previous Emmy noms for his work on The Man in the High Castle in 2017 and 2019.

Eric Durst will sit down with us to break down his Emmy-nominated work in the mini-series, Five Days at Memorial, based on actual events of Hurricane Katrina.

Jeff Daniels is ready to tell his story. The actor, who has been in everything from “The Purple Rose of Cairo” to “Dumb and Dumber,” is readying his audio-only memoir, “Alive and Well Enough,” as a 12-part series for Audible, with the first season debuting in September (with a second season on the way).

According to the official release “Alive and Well Enough” “mixes storytelling, original music and performance, [and] is like nothing you have heard before.” Would it be too much to ask for several chapters devoted to the making of “Arachnophobia?”

“Audible is the only place where I get to do everything I do,” said Daniels in an official statement. “’Alive and Well Enough’ is an audio adventure of an accidental artist who one day looked up and realized he had a sense of humor, a passion for writing and stories to tell.”

Not every TV and film production will stop amid dual strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America. A host of projects stopped work after writers went on strike against media companies for better pay, streaming data transparency and protections against artificial intelligence (among other issues), and many more have paused since actors walked out on July 14.
