Despite the original Kickboxer having five sequels, this is only the second time Jean-Claude Van Damme appears in a sequel, in the franchise and the second time the character of Kurt Sloan will be the lead character instead of being killed off as in the original Kickboxer 2.
Sloan fights against the best fighter of Jo King, named "The Widowmaker". This fighter is world champion K1 Rico Verhoeven, a Dutch martial artist.
Paige VanZant signed on to play Gamon in May 2016, but by July had dropped out of the film. Jessica Jann was cast to replace Vanzant in the role.
