The book Mia is reading to her class is the ending of the existentialistic short story "The Patient" (1962) by Peter Seeberg. A surreal story about a man who looses control of his life as doctors gradually amputate and replace almost every part of his body to the point where he's in doubt of his very excistence.
The director has revealed that the Kanizsa triangle, mentioned in the film, is the structural key to its narrative style. The truths forming in the audience's minds as they piece together the fragmented scenes are, like the triangles in the Kanizsa illustration, mere illusions.
