Axel Scheffler has hidden a Gruffalo in most of his works with Julia Donaldson, which have been mirrored in the adaptations. In this, the Gruffalo can be seen as a Christmas tree decoration.

The character of Stickman first appeared in another of Julia Donaldson's children's books; The Gruffalo's Child (illustrated by Axel Schfieler). Although in that story it was merely a twig shaped like a man which the child uses as oppose to a teddy bear. The Gruffalo's Child was also adapted and made into a TV short for the BBC in 2011.
