This anime is based on the manga with the same title by Masaya Tokuhiro parodied after the actual Tarzan literature by Edgar Rice It begins as a comical parody of Tarzan. The first several episodes are comedies, but the rest of the series consists of (rather) serious episodes.
Midway through the manga's serialization, its name was changed to New Jungle King Tar-chan ( Shin Janguru no Oa Taa-chan). The series ran in Weekly Shounen Jump from 1988 to 1990 as Jungle King Tar-chan, and then from 1990 to 1995 as New Jungle King Tar-chan. It first appeared as a short prototype story in the 1986 Autumn Special as Tar-san (Taasan).
