Creator and star Issa Rae is a 2007 graduate of Stanford University, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in African and African-American Studies. While a student at Stanford, she wrote and directed music videos and plays and created her own mockids reality web series.
Issa Rae instituted as a policy since the beginning of the show that sex scenes would have male actors showing more skin than female actors, because the opposite is usually the norm.
Insecure is based on the show's creator and star Issa Rae's New York Times Bestselling memoir The Misadventures of An Awkward Black Girl, published by Atria / Simon & Schuster in 2015.
Behind the scenes of Insecure: Comedian and talk show host Larry Wilmore serves as a consultant for the show. Singer and actress Solange Knowles is the show's music consultant, and Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Raphael Saadiq does the musical score. Their contributions are seen during every episode's end credits.
Natasha Rothwell, who plays Issa and Molly's friend Kelli, was also a story editor on most of Insecure's first season's episodes. Rothwell was a staff writer on Saturday Night Live during 2014 and 2015.
