In this fascinating and charming ABC special, Diane Sawyer traveled to Switzerland to visit all the classic landmarks featured in The Sound of Music. Commemorating the 50th anniversary, she interviewed Julie Andrews, who also visited Salzburg with her. At 79 years old, it was understandable that Julie didn't climb to the top of the mountain with Diane, but she was featured in all the other sites - and she absolutely did not look her age!
The Untold Story is a must-see for fans, as it shows the lasting love for the film and the impression it has all around the world. In the closing sequence, "So Long, Farewell" plays in the background as video footage from different countries show average Janes and Joes reenacting their favorite moments. You'll also learn cute tidbits about the making of the film, like the funny story about Julie Andrews falling on her face after each helicopter swoop in the opening song. Visiting the von Trapp mansion used in the film, looking out onto the lake and reliving the canoe toppling scene, and pointing out where the real Maria von Trapp had a cameo - all adorable and all memorable. Christopher Plummer and Charmain Carr are also featured in interviews, but it's really the greatest to see Julie coming back to Switzerland 50 years later. This brief tv special is extremely charming, so I highly recommend it.
