The judges had their work cut out for them on Sunday’s American Idol, which kicked off Hollywood Week with the introduction of the “Idol Arena,” and ended with the biggest round of cuts in the franchise’s 22-season history.

Also referred to as the “gladiator’s pit” by Lionel Richie, the Idol Arena was essentially an enormous stage where each singer would perform at random, surrounded on all sides by their competitive peers. 143 singers have made it to Hollywood this season, but only 56 would remain at the end of the two-hour broadcast. For the mathematically challenged, that meant 87 hopefuls would have to be cut.

There’s a reason we would never advise someone to audition for American Idol using one of the judges’ own songs — it doesn’t always end well.

But that didn’t stop 22-year-old Madaí Chakell from attempting to soar where so many others before her have stumbled, performing “I Kissed a Girl” in front of Katy Perry herself. And while it wasn’t a total crash-and-burn moment, Katy was visibly confused by what she heard.

The ITV dating reality show’s Season 10 premiere on Monday night drew 1.3 million and an 11% audience share — that’s slightly more than half the viewers from the 2.4 million (15.4% share) who tuned in for the 2022 summer season opener.

It also continues a downward linear ratings trend for “Love Island,” which had a quiet winter season a few months back despite featuring a new host in Maya Jama. The winter premiere episode attracted just 1.4 million viewers and an 8.7% audience share on its terrestrial broadcast.

Figures for catch-up viewing on the fledgling streaming platform hadn’t been released at press time, but it’s clear that this summer season will be a crucial test case for Itvx as it continues to explore where audiences are watching its juggernaut programs.

Actor Ncuti Gatwa, filmmaker Asif Kapadia (“Amy”) and journalist-turned-screenwriter Terri White, who’s memoir “Coming Undone” is being adapted for Netflix, will serve as judges on the BMW Filmmaking Challenge. The competition is the result of a partnership between BMW and the BFI that aims to support aspiring U.K. filmmakers and uncover fresh perspectives in the film industry.

The initiative was launched earlier this year by BAFTA winner Michaela Coel (“I May Destroy You”). The BFI has shortlisted five teams from some 400 applications, awarding each a £10,000 production budget, access to 8K camera equipment and mentoring from Coel. Inspired by the all-electric BMW i7 and its ultra-wide 31.3-inch rear-passenger theatre screen, the challenge is designed to stretch filmmakers artistically and bring their stories to life in 90 seconds under the theme Evolving Perspectives.

Liebe quit the series on Sunday night (2 April) after a performance of The Police’s song “Roxanne”.

Five weeks after “American Idol” kicked off season 4 on ABC on Valentine’s Day the audition episodes came to an end. Night 5, which airs March 14, features another 21 artists hoping to win over the three judges: Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. Each is hoping to number among the 150 contestants who make it to the next stage: Hollywood Week. At the end of those seven days, only 40 will make the cut.

Those two score of contestants will then take turns performing on their own and with celebrity guests. Only half of this Top 40 will move on in the competition. And from these Top 20, just 14 contestants will get put through to the live shows, which begin in early April. Amid swirling reports about her love life, Grammy nominee Katy Perry spent Valentine’s Day running in the opposite direction of love… literally.

The 33-year-old “I Kissed a Girl” singer shared a video to Instagram on Wednesday that showed her catching the bouquet at her friend’s wedding — and then immediately taking off in the opposite direction.

“When you crave companionship but run from love when you get it ” she captioned the shot, adding the phrases “Happy made up holiday of forced love,” “I love myself,” and “I love you too” in hashtags.

After a whirlwind year for the 33-year-old singer, the pixie-haired songstress released the music video for her power anthem, "Hey Hey Hey," on Wednesday.

Directed by Isaac Rentz, the Marie Antoinette-themed visual sees Perry getting ready for an unwanted date with Prince Piggy. While putting on her makeup and corset, she envisions herself as her own knight in shining armor, ready to tackle anything that comes her way. At the shindig, and after the royal dud disgusts her, Perry takes matters into her own hands.

"You think that I'm a little baby/You think that I am fragile like a Fabergé/You think that I am cracking, but you can't break me," Perry sings. "I ain't got no strings/I'm no one's little puppet/Got my own cha ching in my chubby little wallet/And secretly you love it."
