Patton Oswalt improvised the German Pancakes story on the walk back to the car. He did a few takes of the scene, and invented a different story each time.

The book Anthony (Jaeden Lieberher) is reading, is "Undeniable: Evolution, and the Science of Creation" by Bill Nye the Science Guy. Writer and Director Bob Nelson and Bill Nye were cast members on the Seattle comedy show "Almost Live!" There is also a poster of Bill Nye in Anthony's room, next to one of Albert Einstein.
Glenn Beck, who plays the glaring old man in the church, was in two Stanley Kubrick films, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and Dr. Stangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964).
