It is not about to forgive, but it is about to get forgot . In 2009, and after 22 years in prison, a former ETA's terrorist named Santi (Eduard Fernández) is released Santi travels a little town of Cabo de Gata, Almería (south to Spain) to meet Emilio (Ignacio Mateos) , a friend and former cellmate ; and he uses to stand at restaurant Cerro Negro . During a visit to the hospital where Emilio in, Santi meets accidentally Marina (Elena Anaya) , who faints after to see him. Marina is a doctor married to a journalist (José Luis Garcia Perez) from ¨Voz de Almeria¨newspaper . Obsessed with the murderer of her daddy when she was 8 years old , Marina watches Santi and one day she close to him. After shooting him three times, Marina escapes from the place, just to return minutes later to use all her knowledge as doctor to heal his hurts. Meanwhile , Santi finally heals of his hurts, at the same time , little by little , they have a crush . This man also drags his own demons , and unfortunately for the doctor , they both fall in love . But he participated in terrorist acts and the unsettling past returns with unexpected results . The film is dedicated in memoriam of Kono .
This is a thoughtful and brooding melodrama about disturbing characters who suffer from ancient records .Thrilling movie contains intense drama , thought-provoking issues and being acceptable . The script takes us into the human reality on these characters, victims of their own inner ghosts and distresses with which they must pay for his terrorist past , assassinations and betrayals . Dealing with Stockholm's syndrome , terrorism , oblivion ,redemption , freedom due to the Parot Doctrine : a polemic judicial resource to liberate activists and terrorists according their sentences and years in detention. And with that appealing plot , I welcome the sublime simplicity with which the story is treated and in which stands out the gray atmosphere that provides photography . The main strength of the film, besides the adequate interpretations , is the way in which Uribe brings to life the return of that tragic and ominous past . The past returns as if it were a nightmare, forcing the starring to return to be one person who thought she had given up . But the whole film lacks aspects that I consider relevant ; furthermore , being slow-paced , and some boring . In their quest to remain in the political ambiguity -no initials are given at any time- and deals tangentially to avoid risks . Here filmmaker Uribe directs a passable fiction/filmed in his usual style , without leaving a trace the political issues , in terms of dramatic and narrative excitement . Hard-edge drama centers around terrorist conflicts . However , the film relies heavily on excessive talking , a certain apology or defense of the terrorist cause and being spoiled by tiring dialogue . Imanol provides brief data of the protagonists , their terrorist pasts, their political views , etc. It is a shame, but I understand the sensitivity of the issue and the controversy involved . And in any case, this movie flees the explicit denounce , especially for the hope of those individualistic beings who live in the shadow of violent fanaticism which always entail political battles . ¨Lejos del mar¨ belongs to Imanol Uribe's uneven trilogy that deals with problems in Basque Country , being formed by ¨El Proceso De Burgos¨ (1979) about a trial against Eta members by killing a cop and ¨Muerte De Mikel¨ (1983) concerns a young homosexual and member of an Aberzale party , and ¨Escape from Segovia¨ (1981) based on a book titled ¨Operación Poncho¨ by Angel Amigo (also producer) and who participated in the getaway . The main cast is pretty good , formed by Eduard Fernández and Elena Anaya , both of them provide splendid roles as two suffering characters who try overcoming the painful past that it binds them, in a stranger relationship that will change everything around them. Elena Anaya gives a fine acting as a doctor marked by her father's assassination when she was a child who died when both walk by the street, being witness of the crime , then she interests about the man who killed him. Support cast is pretty good , such as : José Luis García Pérez as Marina's husband starts to suspect about her strange behavior , Ignacio Mateos , Olivia Delcán, Martxelo Rubio and Susi Sanchez.
This Antonio Perez , Julio Fernández production was professionally written by Imanol Uribe who also directed , though has some flaws and resulted in getting a limited success at Spanish Box office . Uribe who lived and had a son with actress María Barranco , gained fame early in his career for his controversial socio-political portraits of the Basque people , such as ¨Fuga Segovia¨, ¨Muerte Mikel¨ and he turned to thriller as ¨Adios Pequeña¨, ¨Plenilunio¨ , ¨Carta Esferica¨ , ¨Dias Contados¨ or ¨Running out of time¨ and drama as ¨Bwana¨ , ¨Rey Pasmado¨ and ¨Extraños¨ . This motion picture will appeal to Spanish films enthusiasts . Rating : 5.5/10 .
