Many people did try to secure rights to stage or film adaptations of Catcher in the Rye, including Steven Spielberg, but Salinger doggedly refused, perhaps because of a disastrous previous experience having one of his other stories put into film. He did toy with the idea, however, of himself playing Holden Caulfield on stage, but this never materialized. Salinger died in 2010, and though he once considered allowing the rights to be purchased after his death, there has not been any movement on that front.
Writer/director James Steven Sadwith said in an interview that "the movie is about eighty-five percent accurate with what happened up to the moment when I went to search for J.D. Salinger, and from that point it's about ninety-nine percent accurate."
