Die Alone is the most recent film from Saskatchewan-based filmmaker Lowell Dean. If you’ve heard of him, it’s probably because of the over-the-top genre comedies WolfCop and Another WolfCop. But he’s done several other films, including the zombie film 13 Eerie and the post-apocalyptic action film SuperGrid, which I was lucky enough to catch along with a Q&a session with him at the Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival a few years back.
Both zombies and a post-apocalyptic setting return in Die Alone, but it’s not a typical tale of the zombie apocalypse, although that isn’t easy to tell from the opening scenes. Ethan and his girlfriend Emma were heading to his cabin when their car crashed. Ethan wakes up to find Emma and most of his memories, are missing.

If read in order, the subtitles of the first six theatrically released "Resident Evil" movies almost ... almost ... spell out a "Divine Comedy"-like story arc. The first film is, naturally, merely called "Resident Evil" (2002), and it's about the release of a deadly, corporate-owned virus that turns the citizens of the world into zombies, creatures, or merely dead corpses. The film's sequel is subtitled "Apocalypse" (2004), implying that the virus escaped containment and infected the Earth. The third film is called "Extinction," implying that the virus did its job and humanity has become extinct. The arc is pretty clear.
What comes after extinction? Well, the fourth film is called "Afterlife" (2010), following the now-dead humanity into Elysium. How apropos. Sadly, the fifth film in the series is not called "Resurrection" or "Reincarnation," but "Retribution" (2012), kind of breaking the spiritual cycle. Perhaps with "Retribution," humanity has become a gaggle of vengeful ghosts? Or perhaps not.

Another season of “Emily in Paris” is finally here, and Season 4 is diving back into the complicated web of love triangles and fractured friendships.
If you need a quick refresher on all the drama, the Season 3 finale left off with Gabriel and Camille’s disastrous wedding, during which Camille — who is pregnant with Gabriel’s child — outed Gabriel and Emily’s longstanding feelings for one another — in front of Emily’s boyfriend, Alfie — and called off her relationship with Gabriel.
We’ll also be seeing more of Sylvie’s husband, Laurent G, as well as Mindy’s boyfriend, Nicolas, and her band, comprised of Etienne and her ex-situationship, Benoit.
For the full breakdown of all of the “Emily in Paris” cast and characters in Season 4 Part 1 — and where you might have seen them before — see below.

At the beginning of its third season, "Star Trek: Discovery" went through something of a soft reboot, with fans often debating about what worked and what did not. Thanks to a complex season-two story about a malevolent machine intelligence, the U.S.S. Discovery was forced through a portal in time, depositing it in the year 3188, about 900 from their starting point. The crew of the Discovery found the future to be bitter and broken. It seems a galaxy-wide cataclysm — nicknamed The Burn — destroyed every active starship a few centuries earlier. The last remaining scraps of the Federation went into hiding while a vicious crime syndicate, the Emerald Chain, rose to power in its absence. The Discovery, equipped with now-ancient technology, had to fight the Emerald Chain, locate the Federation, and attempt to help a galaxy they didn't understand.

In the wake of Terrifier‘s breakout success, star Jenna Kanell has gone on to book supporting roles in the likes of Renfield, WandaVision, The Bye Bye Man, and NCIS: New Orleans — but Art the Clown casts a long shadow. Kanell reconciles her unconventional journey while holding a mirror up to the industry in Faceless After Dark, which she co-wrote with Todd Jacobs for director Raymond Wood, both frequent collaborators.
Kanell stars as Bowie Davidson, an actress struggling to break out from the shackles of B-horror after starring in a killer clown movie. She’s no stranger to fandom — peddling herself at conventions, recording Cameo videos, combating social media harassment — but when an obsessive fanatic in a clown mask breaks into her house, Bowie assumes the role of the final girl to fight back against her oppressors.
The home invasion is ostensibly propelling toward a tense game of cat-and-mouse between Bowie and her stalker,...

"Three Days of the Condor" is one of the most suspenseful crime thrillers that came out of '70s cinema. The New Hollywood movement was in full effect with audiences turning to gritty, low-budget films for thrills outside of the failing studio system. Sydney Pollack was one of the foremost leaders of the cinematic era, and "Three Days of the Condor" was one of the final entries into its canon. The filmmaker's 1970 film "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" earned him his first Academy Award nomination, so "Three Days" was a highly anticipated follow-up.

The real Bonnie and Clyde may have died in 1933, but the legend of the couple's crime spree lives on in the form of songs, stories, and one groundbreaking movie. Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" took Hollywood by storm when it hit theaters in 1967, generating controversy for its on-screen violence and sensuality -- and kick-starting nationwide conversations about who deserves to be the subject of a movie. While film fans still talk about these topics today, the movie's brutal final shootout feels mild compared to modern blood-soaked movie scenes.
Still, "Bonnie and Clyde" is a fantastic film, thanks in large part to its great cast. Warren Beatty plays cocky Clyde Barrow to Faye Dunaway's initially innocent Bonnie Parker, while actors Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman, and Estelle Parsons round out the Barrow gang. Set about 40 years from the present day, Last Sentinel follows a platoon of four soldiers who are stranded on a military base waiting for relief. This world is now covered in water with only two land masses, who are now at war. Now three months past their duty time, the soldiers are wondering whether the relief will come at all, or if it is the enemy who will find them first.
There is plenty to enjoy about Last Sentinel. Right from the first few seconds you can see that it either has a decent budget or the small budget is used very well. I can only assume that much of it was shot at sea but even the shots where we don’t see the ocean, you really do feel like they are...

Netflix is on the cusp of taking down a wide selection of movies and TV series.
The streaming service removes numerous titles each month, but without fanfare; unless you happen to select the thing that’s about to leave, you will have no idea there’s a limited amount of time left to watch.
Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of every movie and TV show being removed from Netflix in April 2023.
We’ve aggregated all the impending removals from Netflix in the UK and US, which we’ve signalled below. If there isn’t a territory listed next to the title, then it will be leaving both.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stacy Title died today after a three-year battle with Als, her longtime manager, producing partner and friend Dannie Festa confirmed to Deadline. She was 56.
Title, whose father was a commercial producer, grew up in New York. The same year, she made her feature directorial debut with The Last Supper starring Cameron Diaz.
Title started gravitating toward the horror genre with 1999’s Let the Devil Wear Black, which she also co-wrote, and the 2006 Snoop Dogg’s Hood of Horror, until she found success with the 2017 The Bye Bye Man.
But just as big opportunities started opening for Title — in 2017, she also made her episodic directing debut with Freakish — tragedy struck.
In August 2017, Title was rear-ended in a car accident. After she started noticing small changes in her walking and speaking patterns,...

But just as big opportunities started opening for Title — in 2017, she also made her episodic directing debut with Freakish — tragedy struck.
In August 2017, Title was rear-ended in a car accident. After she started noticing small changes in her walking and speaking patterns,...

This weekend will see a flurry of activity, beginning with a battle at the top for #1 between Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Joker. Might the Clown Prince of Crime spoil Maleficent's hopes for a second weekend at #1? Elsewhere, several expanding and new releases take the stage including the Stx thriller Countdown and the corrupt cop thriller Black and Blue from Screen Gems. Additionally, films including Parasite and The Lighthouse will expand along with holdover expansions including Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Lionsgate's horror Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
At the top of the box office we're currently expecting Maleficent: Mistress of Evil to hold off Joker by the narrowest of margins, dipping -54% in its second weekend for a $17 million three-day. This drop is a bit better than the -58% dip for Alice Through the Looking Glass, after it opened with...

Big Little Lies is back in action for the highly anticipated second season with an updated all-star cast that includes a handful of Hollywood giants such as Meryl Streep. Besides Alexander Skarsgard's mysterious return as Perry, our most pressing casting question revolves around Douglas Smith as Corey Brockfield. He's Jane's offbeat coworker who's a surfer and aspiring marine biologist. While we got a glimpse of his character in episode one, we don't know a lot about him yet. We bet, however, that you might have heard of the actor behind the scenes.
The 33-year-old Smith had his first breakout role in the 1999 film Blast From the Past, playing a middle-school version of Brendan Fraser's character, a man who has lived in a fallout shelter with his parents for most of his life. Besides this part, Smith appeared in a handful of TV procedurals early in his career,...

“Pet Sematary director Mary Lambert is attached to helm an adaptation of Mira Grant’s mermaid thriller “Rolling in the Deep” for Branded Pictures Entertainment, Variety has learned exclusively.
Sean Hood, whose credits include Conan the Barbarian and Halloween: Resurrection, will adapt the novel, published in 2015. The story revolves around an idealistic young filmmaker who sets out to the Mariana Trench with a small crew to film a faux documentary about mermaids. But the hoax soon turns real as sailors begin to disappear and the filmmaker realizes that they are under siege by actual mermaids. A fight to survive at any cost ensues.
“‘Rolling in the Deep’ is a film led by complicated badass female characters,” Lambert said. “I’ve been waiting to make a film like this my entire career. Our mermaids are not cliché sugary cartoon princesses; they will take you down if you stand in their way.

It was only a matter of time before some major studio made a movie out of Slender Man, the frightening internet meme about a faceless, gaunt and betentacled specter who kidnaps children and also loves photobombs. He seems tailor-made for classic Hollywood boogeyman status, with a distinctive character design, a creepy gimmick and a pre-ordained cinematic style, which dictates he must always be looming in the background, like the killers in “The Strangers” but with a better tailor.
Sylvain White’s “Slender Man” was not worth the wait. The film takes what might be the most fascinating 21st century horror monster and does almost nothing with him. It’s slow, it’s boring, and it’s not scary. The horror in “Slender Man” could be easily replicated… for free… at home… by turning off the lights and playing atonal violin music on your laptop.

Terrifer is an upcoming film from director Damien Leone. In the film, a killer clown attacks three young women, on Halloween night. The violence and terror only fuels this clown's desire for more blood. As well, Terrifier is being released by both Epic Pictures Releasing and Dread Central Presents. The film stars: Jenna Kanell (The Bye Bye Man), Catherine Corcoran (Return to Nuke 'Em High Vol. 1 & 2), Margaret Reed, and David Howard Thornton. This slasher feature begins a theatrical run in mid-March, followed by a U.S. nationwide release on Digital platforms. A preview of the film's upcoming release is hosted here. The Red Band trailer for Terrifier shows many of the film's more gruesome images. The clown's victims are confident at first, in that they can handle a scary clown. But, when the weapons are out, the girls flee into a warehouse - for dissection! Terrifier brings its central character from 2013's All Hallows' Eve.

We don’t need to tell you that 2017 has been a tremendously strong year for horror films. Not only in terms of quality pics, but at the box office, too. Between titles like It, Get Out, Split and Annabelle: Creation, the genre has been pulling in some serious dough over the past few months and now, another milestone has been reached.
Just days after 2017 went down in the history books as the biggest year ever for horror, we’re now learning that the genre has grossed over $1 billion dollars in revenue domestically.
“For perspective, most years don’t even come close to the heights horror has climbed in 2017,” The Wrap notes. “The highest grossing horror film in 2016 was “The Conjuring 2,” with $102 million, a total bested by all four of the horror films listed above.”

Though the horror genre is often criticized for churning out more trash than most, when it’s done right, it’s a wonder to behold and 2017, in particular, has been a truly fantastic year for those who like their movies scary. Between It, Get Out and Annabelle: Creation, among others, horror flicks have ruled over the box office for the past few months, making it the biggest year for the genre ever.
Combined, the total gross for horror movies in 2017 is $733 million domestically, and with Jigsaw having only just hit theatres this weekend and Happy Death Day still going strong, that number will certainly continue to climb. In fact, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see it hit $800 million once all is said and done. After all, there’s still over two months left before the year draws to a close.

Robin Williams is no stranger to the family-film-recut-as-horror-flick phenomenon, but this sideways take on Steven Spielberg’s 1991 movie Hook defies expectation by not exploiting the actor’s aggressive comedic style.
Rather, YouTube channel So, Is It Any Good? culls creepiness by adopting the prevailing stylistic flourishes of most modern horror trailers. That means ultra-quick cuts, deliberate obfuscation, and a simmering soundtrack of fuzzy distortion that pulses to climax before abruptly dropping out for a vocal stinger:
While some recut trailers aim to imply the film itself is constructed atop a horrific foundation (a la Mrs. Doubtfire), others simply demonstrate how crafting a serviceable scare is more of a science than a talent, rendering the source material interchangeable. Looks like it’s one and done for Kong: Skull Island‘s Jordan Vogt-Roberts after the director all but ruled himself out of future installments in the MonsterVerse.
Appearing on the latest episode of Screen Junkies News (via Screen Rant), the filmmaker hinted that he’s ready to spend some time away from Hollywood’s blockbuster scene and the MonsterVerse in particular. That’s understandable, really, particularly when you consider the fact that Skull Island heralded Vogt-Roberts’ first true crack at a big-budget production. The end result was an entertaining, if flawed resurrection of cinema’s great ape, and while the director is clearly looking forward to some downtime far, far away from Legendary’s newly-formed world of gods and monsters, Jordan Vogt-Roberts was wary of ruling himself out of the equation entirely when it comes to 2020’s Godzilla Vs.

Kong: Skull Island came out this past March, the second part of the MonsterVerse which also includes 2014's Godzilla. The film wasn't a smash hit, but still a success, raking in $550 million worldwide so far, on a budget of $185 million. Not bad for a March release without "Batman" or "Superman" in the title. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is up next in 2019, with Godzilla Vs. Kong following the next year in 2020. Besides all that, no Kong solo-sequel has been announced, but now it looks like television may be the place to continue the story started in Skull Island.
Deadline reports that King Kong Skull Island (yes, that is the current title, putting the "King" back in "King Kong") will be the first live-action TV show set in the Kong universe. The writers of The Bye Bye Man, Jonathan Penner and Stacy Title, are writing the series based on the original...

MarVista Entertainment and Im Global are teaming to adapt DeVito ArtWorks' Skull Island and Merian C. Cooper's King Kong. King Kong Skull Island will be a serialized, contemporary continuation of the classic franchise.
The project, which has yet to be taken out to networks, will boast a female lead with a multicultural ensemble that will explore both the wonders and horrors of Skull Island and its origins.
Oscar nominees Jonathan Penner and Stacy Title (The Bye Bye Man) will write the script and exec produce. Dannie Festa (Trolls) of World Builder Entertainment will exec produce. The series is backed by the estate of King Kong's creator, a key element when rebooting any franchise.
"Jonathan and Stacy have taken a world that has enraptured audiences in all its many forms over the years and given it a contemporary,...

King Kong is now headed to TV in a new series that's currently being developed by MarVista Entertainment and Im Global. The series will be called King Kong Skull Island and the report says that it will be an adaptation of DeVito ArtWorks' Skull Island and Merian C. Cooper's King Kong. The series is described as being a "serialized, contemporary continuation of the classic franchise."
The story will center around a female lead with "a multicultural ensemble that will explore both the wonders and horrors of Skull Island and its origins." I enjoyed the most recent film Kong: Skull Island. It was a lot of fun and this new project has potential to be a very entertaining series, which is "backed by the estate of King Kong's creator, a key element when rebooting any franchise."

It appears that the King Kong franchise is about to make a dramatic small screen leap for a new live-action series, marking the giant ape’s serial television debut. It’s certainly exciting news, especially in the aftermath of the recent cinematic release of reboot/prequel Kong: Skull Island. However, the television series might manifest as something different.

The colossal creatures from the world of King Kong could be coming to the small screen, as a King Kong Skull Island TV series is in the works, and although it has a nearly identical name to the recent feature film Kong: Skull Island, it bears no connection to the new movie from Legendary and Warner Bros.
According to ScreenDaily, the King Kong Skull Island TV series is a collaboration between MarVista Entertainment and Im Global Television, with Jonathan Penner and Stacy Title (the husband / wife duo who teamed up for The Bye Bye Man film based on a story by Robert Damon Schneck, with Penner writing and Title directing the horror film) on board as executive producers and writers for the series, which is described as a "serialised, contemporary continuation of Cooper’s classic 1933 monster film to feature a female-led, multicultural ensemble."
