A few days ago, The Hollywood Reporter published a story saying that in addition to developing another "Top Gun" sequel, Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is "exploring a follow-up" to "Days of Thunder," the 1990 racing movie he starred in for director Tony Scott. At a glance, you can see how that decision might make sense: 2022's "Top Gun: Maverick," another decades-later sequel to a Cruise-Scott collaboration, was a gigantic box office hit, so naturally Cruise is interested in revisiting his old characters, like NASCAR driver Cole Trickle, to see if there's any more gold to mine from them. Currently, there are no writers, directors, or other stars attached, so this is very much a "Cruise wants to do it" type of story, and there's nothing set in stone quite yet.
But there are a few reasons a "Days of Thunder" sequel may not make a ton of sense in 2025 or beyond.

Hollywood stars Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz will team up for a new action thriller film directed by Marc Webb. Titled “Day Drinker,” the movie follows a cruise ship bartender embroiled in a criminal conspiracy after encountering a mysterious regular customer. Depp and Cruz have previously starred together in several box office hits, including “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Blow.”
Produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of the successful “John Wick” franchise, the script comes from writer Zach Dean known for films like “Fast X.” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson praised the creative team, saying the film “combines a commercially appealing concept with unexpected twists through an exciting story.”
The announcement comes after Depp’s legal victory earlier this year against ex-wife Amber Heard. His role in “Day Drinker” marks Depp’s return to a major Hollywood studio project for the first time since 2018’s “Fantastic Beasts” installment.

For decades, the line, “Cause she’s got a Great Ass,” shouted by Al Pacino in Michael Mann’s crime classic “Heat” has entertained, but also befuddled viewers. Most have chalked it up to Pacino’s lively performance style or the fact that his character is trying to mess with Hank Azaria’s, but in Pacino’s recently published memoir, “Sonny Boy,” he shared that the real reason LAPD Lieutenant Vincent Hanna is so hyped up throughout the film is because he built his whole character around doing cocaine.
“A lot of people didn’t know that,” Pacino said in a recent interview on the “Wtf Podcast with Marc Maron” in which he discussed the memoir. “It took me 20 years before I could say anything about it.”
Though he was playing a character inspired by a real guy, Pacino developed his own version, making Hanna a recreational cocaine user and...

Bugatti is slated to film late next year in Italy and France for Iervolino’s new banner, The Andrea Iervolino Company.
The movie is set to tell the life story of Bugatti, the founder of the iconic automobile company, who was known for transforming the automotive world with his creative genius and relentless dedication to design and technology. Iervolino is in talks with writers and directors on the project, which will feature a U.S. and international cast and be English-language.

Are “Anora” and “The Brutalist” being underestimated for an ensemble nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards? Who will be the surprise SAG nominee of the year? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their first SAG Awards film predictions.
While “Anora” is perched atop the Best Picture odds at the Oscars, it’s not even in the top five in the SAG ensemble odds, sitting in sixth place. That might be because the Palme d’Or champ is perceived as a Mikey Madison vehicle, but it’s also a sneaky ensemble piece with great performances by Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, and Vache Tovmasyan. Similarly, “The Brutalist” — third in the Best Picture odds but seventh in ensemble — could easily be another film that gets multiple individual nominations, for Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce, but get snubbed in ensemble like “The Power of the Dog,...

Adam Driver has taken on many diverse roles in films such as Lincoln (2012), Frances Ha (2012), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), BlacKkKlansman (2018), Marriage Story (2019), The Last Duel (2021), House of Gucci (2021), and Ferrari (2023). However, for mainstream fans, his portrayal of Kylo Ren, or Ben Solo, in the Star Wars franchise remains his most iconic role.
While the Sequel Trilogy had its share of clumsy moments, Driver’s performance stood out, and Kylo Ren is still regarded as one of the most significant characters in the trilogy. This lasting impact explains why discussions about Kylo Ren persist.
One key aspect of Kylo’s character in the films was his connection to Darth Vader, a relationship that was largely left unexplored. However, a recent Star Wars story has finally delved deeper into the origins of this connection, shedding light on the mysterious bond between Kylo and Vader.

A good tasty noir, like “Love Lies Bleeding,” always feels contemporary, even if set in the past; that’s because it should feel as urgent as the love-and-death stakes it’s about. “Killer Heat,” on the other hand, while not quite so old-fashioned that it creaks, definitely plays like a mirage of detective noirs you’ve seen before. To start with: Could there be a worse title? It makes the movie sound like some straight-to-tape potboiler from the ’80s starring Jim Belushi and Daphne Zuniga. “Killer Heat” opens with the voice of its star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who has a way of sounding like Keanu Reeves’ brainier brother), delivering one of those logy “hardboiled” philosophical nuggets to the audience (“The Icarus myth was set on the island of Crete. And apparently no one there had learned much from his story…”).

The esteemed filmmaker behind the Johnny Cash bio-musical “Walk the Line” and superhero drama “Logan,” James Mangold has done it all. He’s torn up the race track with “Ford v Ferrari,” been the only director other than Steven Spielberg to take the helm of an “Indiana Jones” film with last year’s “Dial of Destiny,” and later this year, he’ll debut his Bob Dylan drama starring Timotheé Chalamet, “A Complete Unknown.” Before he began his career as a filmmaker, he learned from legends like Alexander Mackendrick (“The Sweet Smell of Success”) and Milos Forman (“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”).
In a recent response post on X, Mangold explained his creative process and how it was passed down from these “masters,” as well as gathered from watching the work of others.
“I have learned this way of working from watching masters I admire. Some masters have been my teachers in person.

Was “Ferrari” the start of a late-period resurgence for Michael Mann? Fans of the action auteur already knew an adaptation of Mann’s novel “Heat 2” was on the way, but it looks like Mann has another project in mind once he finishes that. Variety reports that Mann plans to make a US adaptation of the South Korean crime comedy “Veteran” after “Heat 2;” a perfect choice for the director, a thriller that pits a headstrong cop against a corporate scion unafraid to use his privilege in all the wrong ways.

Now, we can find out the answers, as Michael Mann has launched an online project designed to give an in-depth look at his creative process on a given project.
While Michael Mann selecting his most recent movie – last year’s Ferrari – as the one to launch Archives might be a bit disappointing considering his filmography, the plan is to expand this through his entire body of work provided people are actively watching. For Ferrari, fans can check out 20 short documentaries (available in 4K), director notes, script excerpts, set photos, plans from various departments, transcripts of Mann’s discussions with cast/crew, and much more. While the reviews for Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” were solid, and the film had a good festival launch, it would be silly to say that the release was wildly successful. The film only made $43 million worldwide on a budget that was said to be near $100 million. Not only that, but the good reviews didn’t translate into serious awards consideration. That said, Mann himself is very happy with the finished product, and he’s highlighting it on his new website.

In 2023, we haven’t predicted that the Christmas and New Year’s box office would serve up a financial feast without the cherry on top of a box-office Goliath like the years before. Bucking the trend, the big screen’s end-of-year bash didn’t lean on a single titan to rake in the crowds.
Instead, a colorful medley of cinematic treats—from the whimsical Wonka to the deep-sea adventures in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom—acted as a team of spirited workhorses, charming audiences and, of course, filling up the industry’s coffers.

YouTuber Chris Stuckmann’s horror film Shelby Oaks has been picked up by Neon, the distributor behind Longlegs.
Longlegs distributor and production company Neon has picked up the worldwide rights for Shelby Oaks, the debut feature film from YouTube creator Chris Stuckmann.
A hybrid of conventional horror storytelling and found footage, the film’s about a woman looking for missing sister, the co-host of a supernatural podcast who vanished with her two fellow investigators.
Stuckmann, perhaps best known for his successful movie review channel on YouTube, made Shelby Oaks independently, having managed to crowdfund an impressive $1.4m on Kickstarter. Michael Mann, the iconoclastic director of "Heat," "The Last of the Mohicans," and "Miami Vice," may have just changed the game when it comes to home video special features.
Today, Mann launched the Michael Mann Archives, which is described as "a state-of-the-art, interactive website offering unique access into the all-encompassing directing process of one of cinema's most influential filmmakers." The first film to be featured is Mann's passion project, "Ferrari," which he spent decades developing before it was finally released in 2023.
For $65 (plus something called a "gas fee" that's present with each transaction since it involves the use of blockchain technology), which must be paid only to the website at michaelmannarchives.com, fans will receive a unique access pass that will let them "enter and explore the Archive's extensive collection at their own pace and in perpetuity." It is not an exaggeration to say that Neon's buzzy horror flick "Longlegs" has instantly become one of the biggest box office surprises of the year. It simply cannot be overstated just how shocking it is that this particular movie did what it did in its first weekend in theaters. For a studio that has only ever had five movies make more than $10 million domestically at the box office during the entirety of their theatrical runs, a debut north of $20 million on opening weekend is downright staggering. Yet, that's precisely what happened.
Hailing from director Oz Perkins, "Longlegs" pulled in $22.6 million this past weekend domestically, absolutely obliterating even the most optimistic projections. It even blew past Apple and Sony's much flashier "Fly Me to the Moon," which opened to $10 million against a $100 million budget. To be perfectly clear, even if "Longlegs" had made one third of what it made,...

Look Back , an anime movie based on the one-shot manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto ( Chainsaw Man ), took the number one spot both in gross and ticket sales in its second weekend. In the weekend of July 5-7, the movie earned 220 million yen (1.37 million Usd) on 129,900 admissions, according to Kogyo Tsushinsha (only a 2.2 percent drop from its opening weekend ). As reported last week, the film did not match Soreike! Anpanman: Baikinman to Ehon no Lulun in terms of ticket sales last weekend, and only came in second place. However, in its second week of release, the movie surpassed Anpanman in both box office revenue and ticket sales becoming the best-selling movie last weekend in Japan. Look Back has reached 600 million yen (3.73 million Usd) on 360,000 admissions for its cumulative domestic gross. The film began its run in a relatively small number of 129 theaters in Japan and, thanks to the box office success, the...

The first half of 2024 was not as kind to horror at the box office as it has been in recent years. In the pandemic era, horror had been arguably the most reliable genre around, particularly in 2022 and 2023. It wasn't until the blockbuster opening barely posted by "A Quiet Place: Day One" that a genre flick truly broke out this year. The question is, can Neon keep the hot streak alive when director Oz Perkins' "Longlegs" hits theaters? Hailed as one of the scariest movies of the year with near-universal praise from critics, it is certainly well positioned to do so, but it is going to be all about managing expectations.
It's important to understand that this was never going to be the kind of movie to make $20 million on opening weekend. It's a small movie hoping to do well for itself against a small budget, most likely in the $10 million range.

For a certain type of film nerd (and lord knows I’m one), Michael Mann is a god. The man (Mann!) has directed some of the most potent, ultra-macho dramas and crime thrillers of the last forty-plus years, including a whole laundry list of classics, including Thief, Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, Collateral, and many more. Plus, he’s the guy behind one of the greatest TV shows of all time, Miami Vice, and its underrated 2006 big-screen remake (to which we recently paid tribute). His influence can be felt in everything from Sam Levinson’s Euphoria to, shockingly enough, the films of Wes Anderson.
And now, Mann has joined the Mecca of film worship, Letterboxd, opening an account that includes a list of fourteen of his favourite movies. The selection is quite eclectic, including works from Sergei Eisenstein to Martin Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, Denis Villeneuve,...

A few years back, the Kazakh cinema was somewhat of a “flavour of the year” at the international film festival circuit. Most of the festival-goers would single out the name of Adilkhan Yerzhanov and his 2020 titles “Yellow Cat” and “Ulbolsyn”, further highlighting it with the fact that the filmmaker maintained the tempo of two films per year that played at major festivals. However, Yerzhanov is not the only auteur and the festival circuit is not the only option for the films from Kazakhstan to start their exposure.

It seems odd to call someone who is just 32 years old a “longtime environmentalist.” And Shailene Woodley herself dismisses labels like “environmentalist” or “activist.” So … environmental enthusiast? Tree hugger? Whatever you call her, the Big Little Lies and Ferrari star has been actively championing environmental causes since she was a child actor appearing in films like Divergent and The Descendants, from campaigning to create a recycling program at her Simi Valley High School in California to getting arrested protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota in 2016.
Woodley says she has gotten judicious over the years about how and where she uses her platform. Her latest attempt to shed light on an environmental issue has her diving for purple urchins in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Catalina Island in the new PBS docuseries Hope in the Water, from Big Little Lies creator David E. Kelley and chef Andrew Zimmern.

The Avengers is effortlessly one of the biggest fan favorites and best pieces of work created during the reign of Kevin Feige by Marvel Studios. Yet, as much of an utter piece of masterwork as it was with its set of heroes and the most perfect villain, not everything and everyone that filmmaker Joss Whedon had initially decided was included in it.

For instance, when it comes to the villain in the movie, Whedon originally had different plans. Instead of including just Tom Hiddleston’s Loki as the film’s iconic villain as he ended up being, he wanted to bring in another prominent antagonist, though this one would have been from Iron Man’s arc in the comics. However, Feige refused, and that was that.
