In an era where CGI animation dominates the market, it is refreshing to see something different, even if it’s not something particularly new. The fans loved what Dreamworks did with The Puss in Boots 2 and The Wild Robot, while the recently released Over the Garden Wall special reminded us how animated movies can be done without a lot of CGI.

In light of this, a group of animators is currently working on a project titled Light of the World, which is set to hit theaters next summer. The project is funded by The Salvation Poem Project, and it involves former Disney employees.

The movie is a 2D animated Biblical story of Jesus told through the eyes of his teenage disciple, John, who is the principal character of the movie. The Salvation Poem Project has recently released the first teaser for the upcoming movie, which shows what it will all look like next summer.

Cartoon Network has debuted a fantastic 3-minute stop motion animated short film tribute to the cult classic animated series Over the Garden Wall. Since 2020, we have worked with Cartoons Underground to interview their up-and-coming student animators. Some returned to the festival to show their later work, such as Olivia Griselda and Sarah Cheok; others have begun to make waves abroad, such as Calleen Koh; and still others are hard at work on their own life trajectories.

The popular animated miniseries “Over the Garden Wall” has a beautiful new stop-motion short film to mark its tenth anniversary this week. Fans of the show have reason to party. The three-minute special, made with Aardman Animation, brings back the original voice cast and captures the magical spirit that made the show a fan favorite.

For the anniversary project, carefully made wooden dolls of the show’s main characters—half-brothers Wirt and Greg and their friend Beatrice—are used to bring them back. Voice artists from the first series, like Elijah Wood, Collin Dean, and Melanie Lynskey, are also back, bringing back the show’s unique charm.

Directors Mikey Please and Dan Ojari and series author Patrick McHale created the short’s plot. The movie showcases Aardman’s famous craftsmanship with its detailed tiny sets that recreate the show’s unique ethereal mood.

"Over the Garden Wall" creator Patrick McHale always considered Aardman to be the pinnacle of animation, and he was always interested in the art of stop-motion. Though he's worked in some highly influential shows like "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" and "Adventure Time," and he did co-write the script to "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio," it wasn't until this year that he fulfilled his dream of working in stop-motion — and with Aardman, no less.

Just in time for its 10th anniversary, Cartoon Network released an "Over the Garden Wall" short film from Aardman and McHale, and it's a full circle moment for the animator in more ways than one. As McHale told Inverse, "In some ways, it seems like 'Over the Garden Wall' probably should have been realized in stop-motion all along — it just feels kind of right for that world," and he is absolutely right.

Recently there has been a lot of buzz about the popular Cartoon Network series “Over The Garden Wall.” Rumors have been swirling that the 2014 series would be leaving Hulu, but now we are being told that is not the case.

The issue started when people discovered that “Over the Garden Wall” had an “expiration date”, or a date for the show to be removed from the platform. I even heard about this rumor from my kids who always loved the show.

Right now Hulu is where you can find it on streaming because Max (who owns the show) removed it from their service last year.

Of course, many were upset about the possibility.

Ahead of today’s Warner Bros. Animation studio focus panel at the Annecy Animation Festival, Variety has learned that Cartoon Network Studios (Cns) is working on three new “Adventure Time” properties, including a movie and two new series.

The history of television is fascinating because you can trace lines between almost any modern show and one of the classics, as crews move from one show to another, bringing their past work and their influences with them. This applies to both live-action and animation. In the latter, many animators who start as writers or storyboard artists in one show end up creating their own series years later, bringing colleagues along with them, who then go on to create their own shows in return. There is an intricate balance when it comes to animated performances, with animators and voice actors working together to create memorable characters. Remove one of the two elements, and you get a completely different character. Look at Mark Hamill as Joker in "Batman: The Animated Series," Dante Basco as Zuko in "Avatar: The Last Airbender," or Robin Williams as Genie in "Aladdin": These characters work because of the team of animators infusing the characters with life, and because of the unique personality the actors bring to the roles (even if Williams' casting ended up causing a whole lot of problems).

Apple TV+ has unveiled the trailer for the new ten-episode adult animated series ‘Strange Planet,’ which makes its global debut with the first three episodes on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.

Based on the New York Times #1 bestselling graphic novel and social media phenomenon of the same name, ‘Strange Planet’ is said to be a hilarious and perceptive look at a distant world not unlike our own. Set in a whimsical world of cotton candy pinks and purples, relatable blue beings explore the absurdity of everyday human traditions.

Voicing this world of beings are Gotham Award nominee Tunde Adebimpe (“Rachel Getting Married”), Emmy Award nominee Demi Adejuyigbe (“The Amber Ruffin Show”), Lori Tan Chinn (“Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens”), Critics Choice Award nominee Danny Pudi (“Community”) and Emmy Award nominee Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”).

Apple TV+’s first trailer for Strange Planet promises an absurdist take on everyday life in the animated adult series from co-creator Dan Harmon of Rick and Morty fame that is set to debut on Aug. 9.

Amalia Levari serves as the showrunner for the whimsical comedy, as it tells profound and heartfelt stories about beings on a distant planet not unlike our own. Strange Planet has a voice cast that includes Tunde Adebimpe, Demi Adejuyigbe, Lori Tan Chinn, Danny Pudi and Hannah Einbinder.

Levari, Alex Bulkley, Corey Campodonico, Lauren Pomerantz, Steve Levy and Taylor Alexy Pyle also executive produce the animated series from Apple Studios and ShadowMachine.

It’s not hard to see how reality is often stranger than fiction on this big blue marble we live on. Nevertheless, the clear consensus among Gold Derby users is that it’s time for the Fox staple to triumph in the top animation category once more. Its dozenth animated program win would specifically be for its 33rd annual “Treehouse of Horror” episode, which would only be the fourth one ever nominated there. At this point, the series’ Halloween specials have brought it no competitive Emmys at all, but that will finally change if our odds prove correct.

Guillermo del Toro made something truly magical with his adaptation of the classic children's tale, "Pinocchio." The stop-motion film is a loving interpretation of Carlo Collodi's original novel from 1883, based largely on the original source material rather than the Disney animated feature from 1940 that has dominated the public's consciousness of what a "Pinocchio" story looks like. Del Toro spent over a decade trying to bring his vision to life, with the streaming juggernaut Netflix helping push the film across the finish line, with the final product becoming the best Netflix original release of 2022. "Pinocchio" is a stunning, inventive, and heartwarming story about a wooden puppet who magically comes to life, but del Toro made one major, and welcome change to the beloved tale.

"Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" cobbles together the best elements of del Toro's work into a moving, bittersweet stop-motion animated film about the preciousness of life. Fans of the horror maestro's work will find his familiar themes — outsiders, existentialism, anti-war, anti-fascism — take center stage in this magical tale about a wooden puppet (Gregory Mann) destined to heal the broken heart of a grieving man named Geppetto (David Bradley). But unlike previous adaptations, Pinocchio's origin story has more of a Frankenstein's monster feel to him. As Pinocchio learns what it means to be human, the audience becomes tasked with unraveling how humane we are or could be -- a compelling premise for all ages.

Co-directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson and co-written by del Toro and Patrick McHale ("Over the Garden Wall"), "Pinocchio" wastes no time setting up its dark opening.

Horror fans have to start somewhere. You don’t just watch a VHS copy of Cannibal Holocaust and immediately start loving the genre (or at least I hope not), and that’s why Gateway Horror is so important. Like training wheels for spooky media, these stories are meant to introduce audiences to the recurring tropes and iconography of the genre without necessarily resulting in nightmare fuel. That being said, a lot of horror fans mistake that sentiment for Gateway Horror not being allowed to be scary, which simply isn’t true.

The ideal Gateway Horror story works on multiple levels, with creepy elements light enough to avoid traumatizing the casual viewer but ideas scary enough to entertain even the most jaded of horror hounds. To me, the perfect example of this exceedingly difficult balance is Cartoon Network’s Over the Garden Wall, a 2014 mini-series that explores the horrors of the Unknown through innocent eyes.

It’s not easy to break into the Emmy race for Best Animated Program for a show’s first season. Just ask the people behind “Family Guy,” “Archer” and “BoJack Horseman.” But this year, Netflix’s “Arcane” was able to do it and could very well win the prize for its first year of eligibility, becoming the first one to do so since “Over the Garden Wall” in 2015. In order to claim victory, the show will have to beat back three other programs with multiple wins in the category and another freshman series that’s based on the biggest property in cinema.

The titular killer will be played by Jessica Biel.

Three-time Emmy nominee Robin Veith wrote the pilot script of “Candy,” and MIchael Uppendahl will direct it. Both will executive produce. Nick Antosca will serve as executive producer under his banner Eat the Cat along with Alex Hedlund. Biel and Michelle Purple will serve as executive producers for Iron Ocean. Hot Streak: The Best Animated Program category hasn’t seen a repeat winner since the category was divided into “One Hour or Less” and “More Than One Hour” divisions, and “South Park” took home the latter prize in 2008 (for its “Imaginationland” episodes) and the former in 2009 (for “Margaritaville”). That being said, “Rick and Morty” has won both times it was nominated (in 2018 and 2020), so one could argue it’s a dominant force whenever it’s eligible.

Fun Fact: “The Simpsons” and “South Park” are the only two programs to win more than two trophies in this category. The iconic Fox series has 11 wins (most recently in 2019) while Comedy Central’s landmark program has five wins (with the last coming in 2013). With one more win, still-active shows like “Bob’s Burgers” and “Rick and Morty” could become the third to join these elite ranks.

A feature film based on “Redwall,” the first book in Jacques’ series, is currently in development with Patrick McHale writing the script, as is an event series based on Martin the Warrior.

The fantasy novels have sold 30 million copies globally and have attracted an avid following with their tales of heroism, villainy and derring do all played out by mice, moles, hares and badgers. Netflix announced it has enlisted Patrick McHale, creator of Cartoon Network’s “Over the Garden Wall,” to write the feature film. That film will be based on Jacques’ first book in the series, “Redwall”. Netflix is also developing an event series based on the character of Martin the Warrior.

The deal marks the first time that the film rights to the entire book series have been held by the same company and the first time a feature film of any of Jacques’ works will be made.

As August winds down, it’s time to look ahead to everything that’s hitting the major streaming services in September. As always, there’s an enormous haul of originals and newly licensed titles going up across Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu and Prime Video over the month, including content from every genre out there.

The first day of September brings the usual lengthy list of movies arriving on most of the sites. Just a few of the highlights include all three Back to the Future films returning to Netflix, every entry in the Twilight saga arriving on Hulu and countless iconic movies going up on HBO Max, including Grease, Miss Congeniality and V for Vendetta. Also, Doctor Who fans will want to take note, as the most recent season of the show lands on HBO Max the same day.

Although it still has a long way to go to catch up to Netflix, HBO Max is gradually building a reputation for both an impressive library of content and its own original programming. As well as reportedly working on a number of Batman-focused series, the WarnerMedia streamer is also absorbing shows from DC Universe, and funding the Snyder Cut of Justice League. We now know what’s coming to HBO Max in September, and there’s plenty there for subscribers to sink their teeth into.

The big original series highlight next month is the Ridley Scott-produced Raised by Wolves, which explores two androids raising human children. Created by Adam Guzikowski, the program could be one of HBO Max’s first big hits with critics and audiences, and is set to arrive on September 3rd. HBO Max is out with its list of everything new coming to the streaming service in the month of September.

Highlights include Ridley Scott’s “Raised by Wolves,” out Sept. 3, which follows two androids raising a human child on a distant planet; “Coastal Elites” starring Bette Midler, Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Levy, Sarah Paulson and Issa Rae, out Sept. 12, and “The Murders at White House Farm,” which is out in Sept. but doesn’t yet have an exact premiere date.

Others without a premiere date coming in Sept. include season one of “Haute Dog,” “Mo Willems: Don’t Let the Pigeon Do Storytime!” and seasons one through three of “The Great Pottery Throw Down.”
