First lead character performance in a drama series by actor Yuya Yagira.
Based on manga series "Aoi Honoo". Aoi Honoo (lit. "Blue Blazes") is a Japanese coming-of-age manga series written and illustrated by Kazuhiko Shimamoto. It was serialized in Shogakukan's seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Sunday from March 2007 to July 2008, when the magazine ceased its publication; a chapter was published in YS Special in October 2008, before being transferred to Shogakukan's then-brand-new Shounen manga magazine Monthly Shounen Sunday in May 2009.
"Aoi Honoo" takes over TV Tokyo's Friday 24:12 time slot previously occupied by "Rivers Edge Okawabata Detective Agency" and followed by "Tamagawa Ward Office of the Dead" on October 3, 2014.
The coming-of-age drama is based on Shimamoto's own college years in the early 1980s. Anno, Yamada, and Akai have appeared in the manga since Shimamoto actually went to school with them.
Aoi Hono is a fictionalized account of Shimamoto's time as a student at the Osaka University of Arts, which he attended alongside Hideaki Anno, Hiroyuki Yamaga, and Takami Akai.
