John Cleese appeared on the series to be interviewed in September 2018 on a day that Ben and Charlotte were presenting. He wouldn't appear on a day Piers Morgan presents, as the two men have a long-running antipathy, with Cleese even saying that he "truly detests" Morgan. When Cleese had previously said that he was leaving the UK because of the behaviour of the press, Morgan had offered to give Cleese a ride to the airport, describing him as a "whining old twerp".
In April 2020 the Conservative government of Boris Johnson launched a long ministerial boycott of the programme during the Coronavirus pandemic. Piers Morgan described the boycott as "an absolute disgrace" and Susanna Reid called it "a dereliction of duty". However, the renowned former BBC, Channel 4 and ITV executive Michael Grade, a Conservative peer, defended the government's right to boycott the programme in an interview with Ranvir Singh.
On Tuesday, 9 March 2021, Piers Morgan had a row on set with weather presenter Alex Beresford about Meghan Markle and stormed off the set. It was announced later in the day that Morgan was leaving the series with immediate effect.
