Due to the declining sales of the Fire Emblem franchise within recent years, Fire Emblem Awakening would have been the last game in the franchise if it did not sell at least 250,000 copies. For this reason, the developers added in as much content as possible; like DLC, Streetpass functionality, marriage between units, and a customizable player character. As of 2016, Fire Emblem Awakening has sold nearly 2 million copies worldwide.
While many people were upset by the protagonist Chrom not making it into Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, Chrom would later make an appearance in another crossover game. Chrom appears in the Namco, Capcom, Sega, and Nintendo crossover known as Project X Zone (2012) alongside Lucina as his Pair Unit and Tiki as a plot character.
During the games development, it was suggested that a modern setting be used rather than a traditional medieval time period, but the idea was shot down in fear of alienating long time fans. This idea would later be used in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, a Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei crossover which featured several redesigned characters from Awakening.
Despite being a much more prominent character in the game, Chrom was not a representative for this game in Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS (2014), but instead was replaced by Lucina. However, Chrom does appear in Robin's Final Smash Pair Up, which is a reference to the Pair Up feature in this Fire Emblem installment. The feature allows two units to engage an enemy in combat, with one doing the fighting and the other providing support. However the second unit can also attack, making the move Pair Up more loyal to the game.
