Netflix’s Hijack ’93 is a riveting new release that dramatizes a true incident from Nigerian history—an audacious hijacking that shook the country in October 1993. Here’s a closer look at the real-life events that inspired the film and the reasons this act of defiance is remembered by some as heroic.
Political Turmoil in Nigeria: The Road to Hijack ’93
The hijacking of Nigeria Airways Flight 764 came during a period of intense political unrest in Nigeria. In the 1980s and 1990s, the nation experienced a series of coups that undermined its democracy, as military leaders claimed power time and again. In 1993, a hopeful shift seemed on the horizon as Nigeria held its first elections in over a decade. Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, a leader of the Social Democratic Party, won by a landslide, but the military government annulled the results, claiming security risks. This decision ignited mass protests, as...

Two films shared top spots on VOD charts. The newly released “Transformers One” (Paramount) leads at Fandango (which ranks by revenue), while “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) in its third week returned to #1 at iTunes (calculating by transactions). Both films rent for $19.99.
Netflix continues its string of originals placing first on its top 10 movie list (briefly interrupted by “Bad Boys Ride or Die”), with “Don’t Move” (a horror/thriller with Sam Raimi as one of the producers) taking over the #1 spot.
“The Wild Robot” (Universal), still the #3 film in theaters this weekend, placed second on both charts (it was #1 once during the week at iTunes). “Transformers One” is fourth at iTunes, though it was #1 initially earlier in the week. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is #3 at Fandango.
Now in its second week, “Alien: Romulus” (Disney), renting at an unusually high $24.99 (as are “The Wild Robot” and “Deadpool & Wolverine”), dropped #5 at Fandango and #7 at iTunes.

Directed by Robert Peters, Hijack ’93 is based on the real-life events where four teenagers hijacked a plane of Nigerian Airways. These boys were not criminals but merely victims of their own circumstances. The corrupt regime had pushed them to their limit, and they didn’t have an option other than to do something as extreme as hijacking a flight in order to make the authorities listen to their demands. So let’s find out which of the things shown in the film happened in real life and what happened to the hijackers at the end.
Spoiler Alert
Is it based on a true story?
The general elections in Nigeria had been annulled back in 1993, and the country stood on the brink of a civil war. “The Movement for Democracy”, a rebel group operating in the country, waged a war against the authorities because they wanted democracy to prevail and...

“Hijack ’93” is a Nigerian thriller movie directed by Robert Peters starring Nancy Isime, Sharon Ooja, and Jemima Osunde.
Netflix introduces us to a thriller rich with social commentary: an aircraft hijacked by a group of young men advocating for a democratic and just government. Predictably, the government dismisses their demands, eventually deploying the military to thwart the hijacking. Meanwhile, the so-called terrorists engage with the crew to articulate their demands and shed light on Nigeria’s socially unjust conditions. This is one of those films that, while being a thriller, is imbued with significant social themes.
About the Film
This intriguing Nigerian film not only presents a social conflict but also touches on the perpetual class struggle: injustice, abuse of power, and the like are vividly portrayed. The movie features well-developed characters and confronts the audience with pressing social issues head-on. From a technical standpoint, it is a competent thriller.
