Yet, today’s horror landscape would look very different without James Wan’s Saw, which debuted in cinemas in October 2004 and recently returned to UK cinemas to mark its 20th anniversary. Regular franchise director Kevin Greutert has made some potentially revealing comments about Saw XI’s production and upcoming release date. More on it below.

Saw X, directed by franchise veteran Kevin Greutert, was a pleasant surprise for both audiences and Lionsgate as the film racked up decent reviews and people showed up to watch Jigsaw hack up some more people, this time in Mexico.

Another instalment was confirmed by Lionsgate soon after the film’s release, with Greutert set to return as director. Greutert told us in an exclusive interview that he was keen on making one, and that Jigsaw was “crucial” for the franchise.

Saw XI was supposed to premiere in September 2024, giving the production just a year to get it made, but Lionsgate eventually delayed the film to 26th September 2025.

After the tease last week, Epic Games has pulled back the curtain on Fortnitemares 2024 for Fortnite, bringing not only Leatherface and Billy the Puppet into the fray, but also the likes of Edward Scissorhands, Jack Skellington and other season-appropriate Disney properties. The horror classic Saw is back to terrify audiences once again as it celebrates its 20th anniversary this October with a special Unrated re-release in theatres across the United States. Tobin Bell owns a metal briefcase that he uses to house nine composition books, each one containing the notes he took to prepare to play John Kramer, a.k.a. Jigsaw, in the movies that make up the Saw franchise.. Soon, he’ll start taking notes in a tenth book, because Saw XI is on track for a September 26, 2025 release – and he has confirmed to the LA Times that Kramer is “a main part” of the latest sequel.

The LA Times reports that the first page of the notes Bell took for the original Saw “includes a drawn spiral interrogating the likes, dislikes and motivations” of his character. The other pages “are occupied by a series of questions about the character. They start with the most basic details — ‘Where am I?’ for example — and evolve into increasingly specific queries until they form an inverse triangle brimming with insight he’s deciphered on his own.

Saw is the series that just won’t stop. Some horror fans love these movies, others write them off as nothing but torture porn, but movie-goers usually show up to give them healthy box office returns. Yesterday, we shared some images that offered a preview of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre experience that’s coming to Six Flags Great Adventure and Six Flags Over Texas as part of their Fright Fest celebrations this year. Now we’ve learned of another horror movie-inspired experience that will be part of the Six Flags Fright Fest event, as Six Flags is teaming up with Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original Saw film with an experience called Saw: Legacy of Terror! This one is coming to Six Flags Great Adventure, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Six Flags Over Texas, and Six Flags Over Georgia and will be running from early September through November 3, 2024. Jigsaw, the seventh film in the Saw franchise, just hit Netflix, and new audiences are seeing the movie for the first time—leaving many to wonder how Tobin Bell’s John Kramer is alive in the film.

Those fluent in Saw mythos know that John Kramer died at the end of Saw 3, at the hands of Jeff Denlon, the player of Jigsaw’s game in the third installment. Moments before, his apprentice, Amanda, was shot and killed—taking a chunk out of the killer’s legacy.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Netflix’s high profile feature release for this month, arrives on July 3. The fourth installment in the Eddie Murphy-led action-comedy franchise, sees Detroit detective Axel Foley return to Beverly Hills, thirty years after his last visit. This time, Foley must team up with a new partner — played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt — when his daughter’s (Taylour Paige) life is threatened. Franchise fans will be happy to see regulars Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), John Taggart (John Ashton), Jeffrey Friedman (Paul Reiser) and Serge (Bronson Pinchot) make appearances and series newcomer Kevin Bacon is also part of the action as Captain Grant.

Netflix has a couple of major series airing all or part of their final seasons in July 2024. The hit Spanish drama Elite is set to premiere its eighth and final season in full this month with one final mystery (July 26), Vikings: Valhalla is setting off on one final adventure with its third season (July 11), and Cobra Kai is also entering its swan song era with the first part of its final sixth season arriving on Netflix July 18.

The most notable movie offering this month is Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (July 3). Somebody seems to have a lot of faith in director James Bamford. After years of working as a stuntman and directing episodes of mostly DC Comics-related TV shows, Hard Home is his fourth film to see release this year. The fact that the previous three, Air Force One Down, Jade, and Shadow Land left a lot to be desired is, of course, another matter.

Here he’s working from a script by Mark Shea Price, whose previous credits consist of shorts such as The Mayans Were Right and Raised by Fish. It opens with Mary jogging through the woods and attracting the attention of a Polaroid-wielding psycho when she stops to check out an old cemetery.

Six Flags Fright Fest is giving Halloween Horror Nights a run for its money this year, with Variety previewing the impressive lineup of franchise-based haunted houses this morning.

Much like Universal Studios, Six Flags is going IP-heavy for Fright Fest 2024, with franchises including Saw, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Trick ‘r Treat in the mix this year!

They’re joined by haunted mazes based on The Conjuring, Stranger Things, Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, and even the popular DC Comics zombie-horror series DCeased.

Ah, the "Saw" franchise. What started off as a tight little low-budget horror film blossomed into an entire saga that ushered in what some folks consider to be the "torture porn" era of horror movies. The "Saw" franchise is actually somehow still kicking — after the not-very-good "Spiral: From the Book of Saw," the series rebounded nicely with last year's surprisingly good "Saw X." A new sequel, "Saw XI," is on the way, due out next year. Why do they keep making these movies? The answer is simple: people keep watching them. There was a time when Lionsgate had a new "Saw" movie ready to go almost every Halloween season, and that approach brought out the crowds. It got to the point where they adopted the clumsy tagline "If it's Halloween, it must be Saw."

Prior to the immense success of television shows like "The Last of Us" and "Fallout," many audiences felt that video game adaptations were cursed. There were plenty of quick cash grabs and bizarre attempts at movie adaptations that just didn't work throughout the years, but one secret standout is the 2006 Christophe Gans film "Silent Hill." Based on the Konami video game series of the same name, "Silent Hill" follows a mother (Radha Mitchell) who goes into the uniquely haunted town of Silent Hill to try and rescue her adopted daughter, Heather (Jodelle Ferland). While the film isn't super accurate to the story from the games, it does capture the mood and some of the themes and completely nails the aesthetic, which can be half the battle with video game titles as visually recognizable as "Silent Hill." There was talk that Brotherhood of the Wolf and Silent Hill director Christophe Gans’ new Silent Hill movie Return to Silent Hill, which is said to be “totally independent from the two previous movies,” would be having its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month, but that’s not exactly what happened. What actually happened was that there was a private screening of the film for potential distributors. We don’t know how that went, but we are benefiting from the film’s search for distributors. You definitely wouldn’t want to be a child when this demonic clown is clowning around: even if you somehow survived, you’d be mentally scarred for life. One glance at Rob Zombie is enough to picture the kind of horror movies this man makes, and House of 1000 Corpses, his directorial debut, started off strong. Ending up in the Firefly family’s abode is a terrible, terrible idea… But at least, you’d know there’s no hope of escaping, so that’s kind of a nice bonus compared to later entries.

The brothers have been brought on to direct Fall 2, the first sequel to Scott Mann's indie thriller hit, Fall back in 2022. It will be the first of two sequels planned by producer Capstone Global. Mann has written the sequel with the first flick's co-writer Jonathan Frank. They will return to direct the third installment as well. Production on the sequel will begin next month. Horror and thriller directors Michael and Peter Spierig (Lionsgate’s Jigsaw) are set to direct Fall 2, it was announced by Capstone Studios’ CEO Christian Mercuri. Scott Mann, who directed and co-wrote the first film, is returning to co-write Fall 2 with Jonathan Frank.

Following the successful survival thriller Fall released in 2022 by Lionsgate, Fall 2 will reunite producers Mark Lane and James Harris of Tea Shop Productions (47 Meters Down), Capstone’s Christian Mercuri, David Haring, and Scott Mann via the Flawless banner.

Dan Asma, John Long, and Roman Viaris will also reunite as executive producers alongside Capstone’s Ruzanna Kegeyan. Capstone will finance the sequel, with Fall 2 set to begin shooting in June 2024.

Capstone Global is handling worldwide rights to the franchise. In late 2023, Capstone Studios greenlit both Fall 2 and Fall 3 under the franchise. Mann will return to write and direct the third installment.

Apple TV+ is rounding out the cast of the upcoming drama series “Firebug” with four new additions.

Greg Kinnear, Rafe Spall, Hannah Emily Anderson, and Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine have all joined the series. They will appear opposite previously announced series lead Taron Egerton as well as cast members Jurnee Smollett and John Leguizamo. The role marks a reunion for Kinnear and Egerton, who both appeared in the Apple series “Black Bird.”

Spall is repped by UTA and B-Side Management. Kinnear is repped by CAA and Goodman Genow. Mwine is repped by TalentWorks, Gallant Management, Sloane Offer, and Viewpoint. Anderson is repped by Gersh, Gga, and Atlas Artists.

Lionsgate is shaking up its release slate, with two genre releases affected. While The Crow reboot gets a small delay, don’t expect sequel Saw XI to arrive this Halloween season.

Rupert Sanders’ The Crow is shifting from its June release date and is now set for August 23, 2024, Deadline reports.

Juan Piquer Simón’s exploitation slasher Pieces (1982) has a bonkers reputation that precedes it, delivering one of horror’s most entertaining audience experiences of all time. The tagline, “It’s exactly what you think it is!” only scratches the surface of the weirdness within. Sure, you get exactly what you expect in terms of gore in this tale of a jigsaw puzzle-obsessed killer with a chainsaw, but the execution is so over the top there’s nothing that really prepares you for the unique brand of madness.

The return of Saw to the big screen (again) last autumn went really rather well, with Saw X earning the best reviews the saga has seen in recent times (and that includes the sort-of spin-off Spiral).

Behind the camera for Saw X was director Kevin Greutert, who had helmed two of the earlier films. And now, the folks over at Bloody Disgusting are reporting that he’s now been confirmed as the director of the upcoming Saw XI.

It’s not the world’s biggest surprise, though, given that Kevin Greutert was playing nicely coy when quizzed about a further chapter during press for the last film, telling us that he’d like to one. Still, it seems confirmed now.

The "Saw" films will continue to slice and dice their way into theaters until morale improves -- or until audiences finally get tired of the über-successful horror franchise. If the universal acclaim and strong box office performance of "Saw X" proved anything, however, it's that a return to its roots was sorely needed. Following the release of Jigsaw, it wasn’t clear where the Saw franchise would go, but I doubt anyone expected Chris Rock to pitch the next evolution of the series. Spiral: From the Book of Saw starred Chris Rock as a detective tracking down a Jigsaw copycat and was the first movie in the franchise not to include Tobin Bell. Unfortunately, Spiral only grossed $40 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics, squashing any potential sequel.
